The Return Of The Honeymoon: Television News Coverage Of New Presidents, 1981-2009, Stephen J. Farnsworth, S Robert Lichter

Political Science & International Affairs Articles

Content analysis of network evening news coverage during the first year of the Barack Obama presidency revealed coverage that was far more positive in tone than comparable news reports from the first years of the Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush presidencies. Both domestic and international policy evaluations of the Obama presidency were more positive in tone than those of the last three presidents to take office during partisan transfers of power. The findings reveal a revival of the media honeymoon that scholars thought had disappeared during the modern era of a more combative press. An investigation of …

"Do It Now Or Forget It:" Daisy Bates Resurrects The Arkansas State Press, 1984-1988, Rachel Lindsey Grant

Theses and Dissertations

Historically, the black press served as a voice to its community, but after the heat of the Civil Rights Movement died down many publications struggled to find their purpose. As a result of the equality it fought for the black press declined after the 1970s. Despite the recent media trend in 1984, Daisy Bates reopened the Arkansas State Press after a 25-year absence. Since 1941, Bates and her husband, L.C. Bates, were the owners of the weekly State Press until 1959 when it suffered a backlash from the white community. The purpose of the study is to analyze how the …

Does Trust Really Matter? A Quantitative Study Of College Students' Trust And Use Of News Media, Soo Hui Lee Aug 2011

Does Trust Really Matter? A Quantitative Study Of College Students' Trust And Use Of News Media, Soo Hui Lee

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses

Media polls reveal that trust in news media has been on the decline in recent years and so is the consumption of news. This quantitative study reveals no significant correlation between overall trust and use of news media. It finds that college students have more trust in traditional news sources and view TV as their most important news source. Yet they are more likely to seek out a future news event from online news sources, despite having less trust in them. Results indicate that social media sources, such as Facebook and Twitter, are used as frequent sources for news and …

Media Landscape In Twitter: A World Of New Conventions And Political Diversity, Jisun An, Meeyoung Cha, Krishna Gummadi, Jon Crowcroft

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present a preliminary but groundbreaking study of the media landscape of Twitter. We use public data on whom follows who to uncover common behaviour in media consumption, the relationship between various classes of media, and the diversity of media content which social links may bring. Our analysis shows that there is a non-negligible amount of indirect media exposure, either through friends who follow particular media sources, or via retweeted messages. We show that the indirect media exposure expands the political diversity of news to which users are exposed to a surprising extent, increasing the range by between 60-98%. These …

International News Coverage Of Barack Obama As A New President, Stephen J. Farnsworth, S Robert Lichter, Roland Schatz Jun 2011

International News Coverage Of Barack Obama As A New President, Stephen J. Farnsworth, S Robert Lichter, Roland Schatz

Political Science & International Affairs Articles

Content-analyzed television newscasts in the United Kingdom, Germany and the Middle East during 2009 gave the new president more positive coverage than did US media. International news turned negative during the first half of 2010 but remained less negative than US news for most outlets. Positive international news coverage focused on Obama’s personality and his capacity to govern, while Middle East policies received largely negative comments. These findings demonstrate a president’s limited ability to “spin” international news and underscore key differences among domestic and international news outlets regarding coverage of a new US president.

Social Media: The Use Of Facebook And Twitter To Impact Political Unrest In The Middle East Through The Power Of Collaboration, Sarah Danielle Goodman Jun 2011

Social Media: The Use Of Facebook And Twitter To Impact Political Unrest In The Middle East Through The Power Of Collaboration, Sarah Danielle Goodman

Journalism

The power of social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are often overlooked and unaccounted for.  The revolutionary and unprecedented political changes in the Middle East have changed the way the world uses and now views these platforms.   This study addresses the transformation of both the Middle East and social media, alongside each other.  In addition, it discusses how young activists utilized these tools in order to unite and therefore produce radical alteration of Middle Eastern governments, what these governments did in an attempt to preserve control and how the United States got involved.
