Digital Transformation In Tempo 1995-2022: Disruption, Journalistic Field And Transformative Capital, Ignatius Haryanto
JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA
This article discusses the digital transformation at Tempo, one of the most prominent Indonesian news magazines. Under Bourdieu’s term, the ‘journalistic field’ that Tempo operates today had shifted from the autocratic regime under Suharto’s New Order (1966-1998) to a more open and democratic digital era. This article argues that Tempo was slow in anticipating the changing environment, which not only introduced the technological shift but also changed social and political contexts, forcing Tempo to transform into a new digital organization. Using the case study method and interviews with 11 resource persons with specific knowledge of Tempo, this research demonstrates …

Ruth Cowan and Martha Gellhorn both felt discriminated against in their field, but their specific experiences with sexism shaped how they wrote and what they wrote about. Thus, the differences of reporting between Cowan and Gellhorn displays the individual beliefs of each woman and the unique messages they provide to the public.

Reducing Loneliness And Improving Social Support Among Older Adults Through Different Modalities Of Personal Voice Assistants, Valerie Jones, Changmin Yan, Marcia Shade, Julie Blaskewicz Boron, Zhengxu Yan, Hyeon Jung Heselton, Kate Johnson, Victoria Dube
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications
This study examines the potential of AI-powered personal voice assistants (PVAs) in reducing loneliness and increasing social support among older adults. With the aging population rapidly expanding, innovative solutions are essential. Prior research has indicated the effectiveness of various interactive communication technologies (ICTs) in mitigating loneliness, but studies focusing on PVAs, particularly considering their modality (audio vs. video), are limited. This research aims to fill this gap by evaluating how voice assistants, in both audio and video formats, influence perceived loneliness and social support. This study examined the impact of voice assistant technology (VAT) interventions, both audio-based (A-VAT) and video-based …
No Ela Without Ella: Understanding The Naming And Crafting Of Gendered Subjectivities In Puerto Rico, Carmín Quijano Seda
No Ela Without Ella: Understanding The Naming And Crafting Of Gendered Subjectivities In Puerto Rico, Carmín Quijano Seda
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
At the beginning of the 20th century, the official metadiscourses about gendered job titles sedimented the idea that names or indexes pointing to women should be interpreted as unskilled, cheap, or even free labor in Puerto Rico (Azize, 1985; Muñiz Mas, 1998; Baerga-Santini, 1999). For this reason, Puerto Rican women organized and fought for equality in work settings. Furthermore, they became more active in politics and the government. Nevertheless, the Estado Libre Asociado (ELA) and local media discourses and interpretations about women’s labor discouraged them from participating in more senior positions (Acevedo Gaud, 2012).
However, this interpretation seemed to have …

Traditional Or Trendy: News Presentations In Short Form Video And Its Audiences, Sophie Rose Theiss
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The landscape of short-form video news is evolving, propelled by the popularity of platforms like TikTok. This paper employs content analysis to examine the traits and production elements of six news publishers utilizing short-form video to engage with audiences through traditional and trendy, non-traditional presentations. It investigates audience interactions with this content and explores how specific traits may influence audience sentiment. Findings reveal shifts in traditional news norms as they adapt to social media platforms, positive audience responses to trendy, non-traditional videos, and audience sentiment and engagement across short-form video platforms. Additionally, distinctions emerge between publishers rooted in social media …

When And Why Do Arabs Verify? Predicting Online News Verification Intention During The 2023 Gaza War, Menna Elhosary
Theses and Dissertations
Guided by the network gatekeeping and secondary gatekeeping theoretical frameworks, this study employed a 2 (news headlines: pro-Palestine/anti-Palestine) x 2 (news sources: the Times of Israel/Al-Jazeera English) experiment embedded in an online survey on a purposive sample of Arab social media users (N= 452), aiming to understand the antecedents of online news verification during the 2023 Gaza War1. The study investigated the motives that might have encouraged or discouraged Arabs from verifying the war-related news circulated on social media. A model was proposed to examine the role of confirmation bias in shaping perceptions about sources and messages, thereby impacting online …

The methodology of the study was based on in-depth interviews from Egypt, Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Libya, and Tunisia with a selection of journalists …
