Throughout the entire colonial period of Texas, except for brief periods of gallant exploration and practical reconnaissance, Spanish pioneers carefully avoided the Plains of West Texas as a potential area of permanent settlement. Essentially because of the absence of dependable water resources, an all-important consideration prescribed in the Recopilacion de las Leyes de las Indias for the selection of occupation sites, Hispanics generally regarded the West Texas Plains with respectful awe and fearful apprehension. Spanish law prohibited settlers, notwithstanding personal initiative and the availability of land in great abundance, from occupying a region that lacked reliable sources of fresh water. …

Few issues more vexed Americans during the Gilded Age than the regulation of railroads. America's first big business, the railroads wielded enormous economic power and by the end of the nineteenth century represented 10 percent of national wealth. 1 Farmers and other local shippers often viewed railroads as an exploitative monopoly and blamed them for excessive and discriminatory charges. They repeatedly clamored for regulation of the freight and passenger rates fixed by railroad companies. PREFACE: I would have to cite the five months I spent in Cork, Ireland as the biggest motivating factor behind this paper. I knew next to nothing about Northern Ireland before this period. Soon after my arrival in Cork, however, I became fascinated with the socio-religious anomaly to the north of me. This thesis investigates the impact of Khomeiniism on the Shi'ites of Iraq. Specifically it seeks to determine whether the rise of Khomeiniism in Iran inspired Iraq's Shi'ite majority to rise against the Ba'athist leaders of Iraq with the object of establishing an Islamic Republic. The paper focuses on the political activities of the Iraqi Shi'ites from Ayatollah Khomeini's rise to power in Iran in February 1979 to the beginning of hostilities between Iraq and Iran in September 1980. This thesis examines the purpose of U.S. military aid in the American Republics from 1951 through 1961 and proves that concern for internal security became dominant during that period. At first military aid supported hemispheric defense against communist aggression, which Washington orchestrated through mutual defense agreements, but by 1953 maintenance of internal security emerged as the major aim of aid to several Central American nations. In 1956 the National Security Council determined that internal security was a vital goal of the military aid program for Latin America. Encyclopedia text is most often presented as objective, factual, authoritatively documented truth. To examine this knowledge claim, this thesis analyzes the portrayal of the 1979 Nicaraguan revolution in editions of the four major U.S. encyclopedias. A qualitative content analysis is employed to determine the political perspectives present in encyclopedia coverage of the Nicaraguan revolution and the subsequent changes in Nicaraguan political economy brought about by that revolution.

The findings indicate that significant differences among and within the encyclopedias existed in the text analyzed. A variety of political perspectives were found to have influenced the content of the text, and to …

During the summer of 1857, Colonel Edwin Vos Sumner and his troops invaded Cheyenne and Arapaho land. By the 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie the two tribes were recognized as the occupants of western Kansas and eastern Colorado between the Platte and Arkansas rivers. The treaty also tried to prevent intertribal warfare and to protect emigrants and commerce over the platte River road and the Santa Fe Trail. After a conflict in 1856 at the Upper Platte bridge, Cheyenne war parties attacked wagon trains on the Platte River road. Whether the raiders were all Southern Cheyennes or if they were …

Careful students of the American West have long realized that making valid generalizations about the officers who served in the frontier army is extraordinarily difficult. For example, a major theme in Soldier West: Biographies from the Military Frontier (1987), edited by Paul Andrew Hutton, was the rich variety in experiences, interests, and personalities among army officers. This thesis addresses the question, why does U.S. foreign policy contribute to political instability in developing nations? To ascertain the answer, it analyzes the post-World War II administrations from Truman through Johnson. One mode of containment, cliency, a foreign policy relationship between a major power and a weaker state, is developed within the framework analyzing containment. The cliency model provides a theoretical basis for explaining how the domestic structure of the client state is systematically distorted by the patron's actions in pursuit of its global interests.
