Review Of Sociobiology And The Social Sciences By Robert W. Bell And Nancy J. Bell, David R. Johnson Aug 1992

Review Of Sociobiology And The Social Sciences By Robert W. Bell And Nancy J. Bell, David R. Johnson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The application of evolutionary theory of inclusive fitness to understanding human social behavior has seen a recent resurgence in anthropology, psychology, and sociology. While sociobiological theory and research are still incipient In these disciplines, the perspective has received enough attention to warrant all social scientists becoming more acquainted with the theory and methods of the practicing sociobiologist. The title and modest size of this book (only 130 pages) suggest that it might serve well for this purpose. It contains seven original papers by practicing sociobiologists written for an audience not well versed in the evolutionary model. While terms are carefully …

Review Of Judicial Decision-Making In The People's Republic Of China: An Overview Of Unique Developments, Mark Findlay

While the constitutional injunction to independence is general, specific legislative provisions do not directly preclude the overall governance of the Party. In fact, the initial articles of the 1982 Constitution celebrate the 'dignity of the socialist legal system' (Article 5), and as the preamble confirms, the construction and maintenance of Chinese socialism remains under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. Therefore it might be argued that the protection of judicial power from the 'interference by administrative organs, public organisations or individuals' (Article 126) does not envisage the intervention of the Party.

Review Of "The Government And Politics Of The Alberta Metis Settlements” By T. C. Pocklington, K. P. Binda Feb 1992

Review Of "The Government And Politics Of The Alberta Metis Settlements” By T. C. Pocklington, K. P. Binda

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

With the emergence of native issues such as land claims and self-government in the Canadian constitutional debate, Pocklington's non-technical, informative, and exploratory book as emerged at a timely moment.

A void of scholarship about the Metis has been observed by historians such as Frideres and Friesen. Pocklington has attempted to fill that void, but acknowledges the complexity of his study since the "government and politics ... as they function in small communities like the settlements is intimidating [as] it is difficult to identify the various players, much less to discover how they interact" (p. xiii).

Great Plains Reseach Vol. 2 No.1, 1992 - Editor's Note

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

When manuscripts are evaluated for possible publication in Great Plains Research, the editorial panel has the question of “place” firmly in mind. The distinction is of a place rather than in a place. Residence of the author is certainly not a prerequisite. While it might seem that the best regional scholarship comes from the region, the cosmopolitan character of the academy belies that generalization. Nor is a study done in a region necessarily of the region. A fine paper may result from a survey of residents of Kansas, for example, without any insight into whether the location makes any …

Review Of Gennans In The New World: Essays In The History Of Immigration, Jorg Nagler Jan 1992

Review Of Gennans In The New World: Essays In The History Of Immigration, Jorg Nagler

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This book is a collection of nine essays Frederick C. Luebke published between 1965 and 1985 and one essay specifically written for this volume dealing with German-American historiography of the last decades. The essays-including revisions and addenda-reflect Luebke's impressive contribution to the social, political, and cultural history of German Americans and provide an overview of the substantial German immigration to the United States. The essays also delineate Luebke's changing focus from the Great Plains and Midwest of the nineteenth century to an enlarged nationwide perspective of Germans in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. To go even beyond this agenda, Luebke …

The "Poison Porridge" Case: Chinese And The Administration Of Justice In Early Saskatchewan, Ken Leyton Brown

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

On the morning of 8 August 1907 a number of patrons were taking breakfast in the Capital Restaurant on Lome Street in Regina. The restaurant had not been in operation long but was apparently doing a good business, so it must have been somewhat disturbing to Mr. Steele, the owner and manager, when shortly after beginning their morning meal a number of his patrons became ill. The symptoms included quite severe abdominal pains so the decision was taken to send for a doctor who arrived to find nine people suffering from what was obviously something rather more serious than indigestion. …

On 26 June 1975 in a firefight on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation between the FBI and AIM, two FBI agents were killed. AIM member Leonard Peltier and three other Indians were arrested. Only Peltier was convicted. The Trial of Leanard Peltier carefully documents the trial in its social and historical context.

Review Of Women Of The New Mexico Frontier 1846-1912, Janet E. Schulte Jan 1992

Review Of Women Of The New Mexico Frontier 1846-1912, Janet E. Schulte

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Historians of the women's west have centered their analysis around the extent to which Victorian culture shaped women's experience on the frontier. Cheryl Foote's collective biography of white women in New Mexico territory supports the argument that the Victorian cultural values, especially the cult of domesticity, were transferred with few mutations from the East to the Southwest during the nation's westward expansion.

Having Babies Or Not: Household Composition And Fertility In Rural Iowa And Nebraska, 1900,1910, Deborah Fink, Alicia Carriquiry Jan 1992

Having Babies Or Not: Household Composition And Fertility In Rural Iowa And Nebraska, 1900,1910, Deborah Fink, Alicia Carriquiry

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

How did life change for people from the eastern prairie or forest regions when they crossed the Missouri River to settle in the Plains of Nebraska? The land presented its own social, economic, and environmental problems for the settlers. While some historians have emphasized the resourcefulness with which settlers adapted to maintain the life ways of the rural regions to the east, others have pointed to the cultural and social shifts effected by the plains environment. Considerable social divergence occurred within the plains population, even within the dominant northern European American ethnicity. This study addresses the lives of rural women …

The Sacred And The Secular: Exploring Contemporary Meanings And Values For Religious Buildings In Singapore, Lily Kong Jan 1992

The Sacred And The Secular: Exploring Contemporary Meanings And Values For Religious Buildings In Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The study of human environmental experiences has engaged a range of disciplinary attention, with work deriving chiefly from environmental psychologists and geographers. However, most research has focused on the sensory aspects of environmental experience, while the intangible, immeasurable experiences of environments have been somewhat neglected. Certainly, the meanings and values that are invested in places, which form part of the interaction between humans and environments, have not been sufficiently researched. My intention in this paper is to address one aspect of this silence, namely the ways in which humans experience their religious environments, and more particularly, the symbolic meanings and …

Xinyong Or How To Trust Trust? Chinese Non-Contractual Business Relations And Social Structure :The Singapore Case, Thomas Menkhoff Jan 1992

Xinyong Or How To Trust Trust? Chinese Non-Contractual Business Relations And Social Structure :The Singapore Case, Thomas Menkhoff

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

One key for an understanding of Chinese economic behaviour in Singapore, Hong Kong or Malaysia is tmst - a term which has not been thoroughly dealt with in contemporary studies. With reference to the Chinese business community in Chinese-dominated Singapore and sociological concepts of trust, the article aims at analyzing the different levels of meaning of the trust mechanism (Chinese: xinyong) which is seen as essential lubricant in Chinese personalistic and non-contractual business relations. But trust in itself is no guarantee of cooperative behaviour. To enable interpersonal trust as precommitment and basis of local or international trading networks and commercial …

The Law Of Assembly In The People's Republic Of China: Implications Of The Retreat To Formal Legalism For The Legislative Process In China, Mark Findlay, Thomas Chor-Wing Chiu Sep 1991

The Law Of Assembly In The People's Republic Of China: Implications Of The Retreat To Formal Legalism For The Legislative Process In China, Mark Findlay, Thomas Chor-Wing Chiu

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Under the most current constitution, written in 1982, the citizens of the PRC are guaranteed freedom of the press, speech, assembly, association, procession, and demonstration; furthermore, all citizens enjoy the rights and assume the responsibilities prescribed by the constitution and the law. In 1989, following the student democracy demonstrations in the PRC, the government circulated a draft of the law concerning assemblies, processions, and demonstrations for public comment. While the 24 articles of the draft legislation effectively removed the right to free public protest by interposing a variety of administrative procedures governing proscription of venue, application, approval, and review, the …

The Rural-Urban Continuum And Environmental Concerns, J. Allen Williams Jr., Helen A. Moore Aug 1991

The Rural-Urban Continuum And Environmental Concerns, J. Allen Williams Jr., Helen A. Moore

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Studies have generally found rural residents to be less concerned about environmental problems than urbanites. This difference has been attributed primarily to a nature-exploitative attitude of farmers. The present study finds little support for this proposition, but an alternative explanation, derived from rational choice and exchange theory, is supported. Owner-operator farmers are different from tenants and absentee owners in their level of environmental concern and shift positions across the range of environmental issues, as do rural nonfarm and small town residents. Furthermore, urban respondents are not consistently more likely than all rural categories to show the greatest environmental concern.

Farm Women's Labor Contributions To Agricultural Operations, Audie Blevins, Katherine Jensen Aug 1991

Farm Women's Labor Contributions To Agricultural Operations, Audie Blevins, Katherine Jensen

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Employment data for women living on farms/ranches in six Wyoming counties were gathered in 1985 and 1986 as part of a farm/ranch households survey. This paper focuses on female employment and its contribution to the economic viability of farm operations, by considering the importance of women's as well as men's employment in maintaining the economic viability of farming/ranching operations during a farm crisis and a wage boom. Although an equal percentage of females and males work off-farm, the data show gender-defined patterns. While size of farm operation was a major predictor of the likelihood of engaging in off-farm employment for …

Review Of Harvest Of Opportunity: New Horizons For Farm Women, By Lois L. Ross, Katherine Jensen Aug 1991

Review Of Harvest Of Opportunity: New Horizons For Farm Women, By Lois L. Ross, Katherine Jensen

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Journalist Lois Ross has organized interviews with twenty-four contemporary farm women of the Canadian prairie provinces into four categories of women's entrepreneurship in the face of the farm crisis of the 1980s. With only a six-page introduction to the volume and briefer chapter prefaces, it is in many ways a book ready to be written. The author defended the interviews, edited only for length and redundance, in the same ways I have often argued for "qualitative" research in saying that the words of the women themselves speak better to the "feelings or frustrations, apprehension or optimism, barriers and breakthroughs" than …

Review Of The Middle West: Its Meaning In American Culture, By James R. Shortridge, John Fraser Hart Aug 1991

Review Of The Middle West: Its Meaning In American Culture, By James R. Shortridge, John Fraser Hart

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

James R. Shortridge has cheerfully pursued the will-o'-the-wisp of trying to describe the "idea" of the Middle West in a book that was given the prestigious John Brinckerhoff Jackson Prize of the Association of American Geographers in 1990. He argues that a careful reading of the kinds of popular publications that are indexed in the Renders' Guide to Periodical Literantre can reveal the personality and image of the region, what it originally meant to Americans, and how this meaning has changed. over time. Attempts to find meaning in places and things currently seem to be fashionable. Such efforts can be …
