Czechoslovakia's "Velvet Divorce" Ethnicity In The Post-Cold War World, Jonathan Robert Wert May 1995

Czechoslovakia's "Velvet Divorce" Ethnicity In The Post-Cold War World, Jonathan Robert Wert

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

The problem addressed in this study is the issue of ethnicity in post-communist Czechoslovakia. Specifically, the roots of the Czechoslovaks' "Velvet Divorce," or dissolution into two independent states, are explored and an explanation is offered as to the cause of this ethnic separatism. The methods used include archival, sociological, and statistical research so as to provide a firm multidisciplinary basis for the. conclusions reached. The results of this research suggest that the nation of Czechoslovakia was never integrated in a meaningful manner. Though unified legally for over seventy years, the Czechs and Slovaks did not develop a common identity as …

Non-Governmental Organizations, Non-Violent Action, And Post-Modern Politics In Thailand, William A. Callahan Apr 1995

Non-Governmental Organizations, Non-Violent Action, And Post-Modern Politics In Thailand, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

y interpretations of Thailand's May 1 992 mass movement and mili- tary crackdown dwell on middle-class democracy formulae and/or mobacracy threats to national security. The paper argues that the two most interesting aspects of the May Events - non-violent tactics and non-governmental organizations - challenged not just the soldiers, but the whole military-directed discourse of political organization in Thailand. Utilizing feminist theory's notion of oppositional consciousness, the non-governmental organization/non-violent action dynamic is framed as a motivating force behind the social movement of April-May 1 992. This challenge can be called "post-modern" because, with its multi-centred organization and centrifugal forces, it …

Review Of "A Funnie Place, No Fences": Teenagers' Views Of Kansas, 1867-1900 Edited By C. Robert Haywood And Sandra Jarvis, Carol Miles Petersen Jan 1995

Review Of "A Funnie Place, No Fences": Teenagers' Views Of Kansas, 1867-1900 Edited By C. Robert Haywood And Sandra Jarvis, Carol Miles Petersen

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

For some time we have had accounts written by men of the early years in a new state; then women's diaries began to be discovered recording events from a woman's perspective. With this book, we now have a sense of what it was like to be a teenager who had moved from New York or Iowa into a prairie land with little broken ground and "no fences." "A Funnie Place" adds an important dimension to both our historical and sociological understanding of daily life on the Kansas Plains.

Review Of The Persistence Of Ethnicity: Dutch Calvinist Pioneers In Amsterdam, Montana By Rob Kroes, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1995

Review Of The Persistence Of Ethnicity: Dutch Calvinist Pioneers In Amsterdam, Montana By Rob Kroes, Frederick C. Luebke

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The Persistence of Ethnicity is not just another digest of desiccated social data but an engaging account, exceptionally well written, that probes the role of religion in the maintenance of ethnicity in the American West. Atypical perhaps in the small size and isolated location of the area of its focus, this case study is all the more valuable because these very characteristics (combined with the availability of excellent sources) allow Kroes to explore and test his ideas with ease.

Breaking The Silence Hymns And Folk Songs In O. E. Rølvaag's Immigrant Trilogy, Phillip R. Coleman-Hull Jan 1995

Breaking The Silence Hymns And Folk Songs In O. E. Rølvaag's Immigrant Trilogy, Phillip R. Coleman-Hull

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In an essay written in 1933 Einar Haugen briefly mentions that "RØlvaag's most delicate observations take the form of music, and rhythmic sound becomes to him the highest form of beauty." Haugen refers merely to the sonorous qualities of the prairie and never delves into the songs-both Norwegian folk songs and hymns-that surface through O. E. RØlvaag's immigrant trilogy. Since 1933, critics have explored a multitude of themes related to Giants in the Earth, Peder Victorious, and Their Father's God, and much attention has been given to the issue of cultural integrity as espoused by RØlvaag. Language, religion, and folklore …

Music And Cultural Politics: Ideology And Resistance In Singapore, Lily Kong Jan 1995

Music And Cultural Politics: Ideology And Resistance In Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper focuses on popular music written and produced by Singaporeans to illustrate the nature of social relationships based on ideological hegemony and resistance. Analysis is based on two groups of music: 'national' songs supported by the government in the 'Sing Singapore' programme; and songs brought together in Not the Singapore song book. Interviews with local lyricists and analysis of video productions provide supplementary information. Music is used by the ruling elite to perpetuate certain ideologies aimed at political socialization and to inculcate a civil religion that directs favour and fervour towards the nation. Music is also a form of …

Towards An Understanding Of Chinese Business Networks In Asia-Pacific: The Singapore Case, Thomas Menkhoff, Chalmers Labig

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The embeddedness of entrepreneurs in local, regional or global business networks based on kinship, clanship, territorial or ethnic ties and solidarities has often been cited as characteristic of the Chinese business community in Southeast Asia. Qualitative interviews with Singaporean Chinese merchant-exporters were conducted in order to examine this thesis and shed light on the various "guanxi bases" of their international trading networks. The findings suggest that there is a strong tendency among these Singaporean entrepreneurs towards external commercial transactions with "outsiders" and "friends" rather than with "kin" whether by blood, marriage, or ascription. Kinship reciprocity may curb the autonomy and …

If one were looking for "essays" on Confucian ethics, one would not find them here. With one exception where a participant sent in a written clarification, the report is based on recordings of the wide-ranging discussions that transpired at the workshop. What one will find are serious and often provocative reflections on a complex phenomenon by a group of eminent scholars from …

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Today, intertribal participants at Southern Plains powwows (Oklahoma and Texas) celebrate common history and culture-their sense of "Indianness"-through the enactment of ceremonial song and dance. The Kiowa playa central and assertive role in the Southern Plains powwow network. and they use the Gourd Dance as the vehicle to identify their "Kiowaness." The maintenance of identity is traced from the late nineteenth century through the evolution of Kiowa dances leading up to the Gourd …

Defining Religion: Death And Anxiety In An Afro-Brazilian Cult, James M. Donovan Jul 1994

Defining Religion: Death And Anxiety In An Afro-Brazilian Cult, James M. Donovan

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This dissertation clarifies the anthropological concept of religion by crafting the most useful scientific definition. The first chapter illustrates the confusion surrounding this term, and argues that the comparative method of anthropology requires that this imprecision be removed. Reviewing the four types of definitions of religion extant in the literature -- Content, Behavioral/Performative, Mental, and Functional -- Chapter 1 concludes that the best definition will be a generative functional definition. The second chapter supports this conclusion by finding that an independent discipline, American constitutional law, has arrived at the same understanding.

Chapter 3 details the nature of definitions and the …

The Effects Of Migration Upon The Quality Of Life Of Elderly Movers In A Small Prairie City: The Case Of Brandon, Manitoba, John Everitt, Barbara Gfellner Feb 1994

The Effects Of Migration Upon The Quality Of Life Of Elderly Movers In A Small Prairie City: The Case Of Brandon, Manitoba, John Everitt, Barbara Gfellner

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Mobility decisions and the effects of migration upon the quality of life of elderly people who had recently relocated to or within Brandon are assessed and compared with the responses ofa non-mover "control group." Although confirming many established results concerning the migration of the elderly, other conclusions also emerged. For instance, migrants and non-movers have a number of different social demographic characteristics, and their needs and desires appear to be quite dissimilar. Although non-movers appear apprehensive about the future, many movers see positive outcomes, in terms of life satisfaction, resulting from their migration. The research also raises the question of …
