Cleavages Of Political Values Among Generations In Brazil, Ibpp Editor Jul 1997

Cleavages Of Political Values Among Generations In Brazil, Ibpp Editor

International Bulletin of Political Psychology

This article was written by Professor of Psychology Fabián Echegaray, Professor of Sociology Paulo Krischke, and Director of Institutional Ethics Aluir Toso. All three researchers are at the Universidad Federal de Santa Cantarina. They posit and provide supporting theory and data that values which are postmaterialist (emphasizing psychological well-being and self-actualization) as opposed to materialist (emphasizing materialistic goods) are more likely to be displayed by younger than older Brazilians and by those with higher than lower social class. Thus older, lower class Brazilians will be most materialist and younger, higher class Brazilians will be most postmaterialist. The paper was presented …

Theory And Practice In The Career Of Fernando Henrique Cardoso: Part I, Ibpp Editor Jul 1997

Theory And Practice In The Career Of Fernando Henrique Cardoso: Part I, Ibpp Editor

International Bulletin of Political Psychology

Political psychologists often contemplate the significance of their research--theoretical, empirical--for the practice of politics. Too often, seemingly valuable research is ignored, discounted, misperceived, and misapplied by political practitioners. Yet occasionally researchers practice politics as well--not just the politics of everyday life--but the formal politics of local, regional, national, and international entities. In the United States, Woodrow Wilson, Eugene McCarthy, and even Newt Gingrich come immediately to mind. What will be the interaction of research and practice when both are developed and implemented by the same individual? Dr. Ted Goertzel of Rutgers University has written the following article concerning another researcher-practitioner--Fernando …

No. 03: International Migration, Immigrant Entrepreneurs And South Africa’S Small Enterprise Economy, Christian M. Rogerson Jul 1997

No. 03: International Migration, Immigrant Entrepreneurs And South Africa’S Small Enterprise Economy, Christian M. Rogerson

Southern African Migration Programme

Since 1990 there has been a growing movement of foreign migrants and refugees to South Africa. The migrants have come primarily from South Africa’s traditional supply areas, including many Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries. An increasing number, however, are from elsewhere in Africa and further afield. South Africa’s new migration regime has generated considerable controversy within the country. The policy debate focuses on the implications of migration for the national labour market and for the development of new national immigration policy.

The best-documented form of migration by temporary workers is from surrounding African countries in such sectors as mining …

Review Of On Behalf Of The Wolf And The First Peoples By Joseph Marshall Iii, Ellen Dubas Jul 1997

Review Of On Behalf Of The Wolf And The First Peoples By Joseph Marshall Iii, Ellen Dubas

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Much of what has been written about Native Americans has been written by Euro-Americans. It is very important that the peoples write about aspects of their culture that they consider to be most important about themselves. On Behalf of the Wolf and the First Peoples by Joseph Marshall III is, I hope, the first of many such works.

In his book Marshall demonstrates a relationship between Native Americans and the wolf. That humans are a part of nature and not in control of nature is an idea that has begun to resonate throughout Anglo culture in the form of the …

Review Of The Community In Canada: Rural And Urban Edited By Satadal Dasgupta, Paul Gingrich May 1997

Review Of The Community In Canada: Rural And Urban Edited By Satadal Dasgupta, Paul Gingrich

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This book surveys studies of rural, small town, and urban community in Canada. The first third of the book, written by Dasgupta, provides definitions and perspectives of community. The remainder of the book contains a selection of studies of communities in Canada, mostly sociological and mostly from the 1960s and 1970s.

Dasgupta begins with Hillery's 1955 classification of ninety-four definitions of community, noting that all but three of these definitions involve "a group of people in 'social interaction.’” Theories and perspectives on community are organized into five categories: ecological, ethnographic, social system, social or interactional, and conflict approaches. The author …

Cross-Border Ties Among Protest Movements The Great Plains Connection, Mildred A. Schwartz Apr 1997

Cross-Border Ties Among Protest Movements The Great Plains Connection, Mildred A. Schwartz

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This paper examines the connections among political protest movements in twentieth century western Canada and the United States. Protest movements are social movements and related organizations, including political protest parties, with the objective of deliberately changing government programs and policies. Those changes may also entail altering the composition of the government or even its form. Social movements involve collective efforts to bring about change in ways that avoid or reject established belief systems or organizations. They begin with assessments of what is wrong and propose a blueprint for action to achieve new goals by drawing on committed supporters willing to …

Review Of Creative Crusader: Edmund G. Kaufman And Mennonite Community By James C. Juhnke, Nancy Bernhardt-Holland Apr 1997

Review Of Creative Crusader: Edmund G. Kaufman And Mennonite Community By James C. Juhnke, Nancy Bernhardt-Holland

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Juhnke's candid biography of the SwissVolhynian educator, reformer, missionary, and Bethel College president (volume eight in the Cornelius H. Wedel series on Anabaptist and Mennonite history) is an appropriate companion to his earlier volume on Wedel himself. Juhnke follows up his study of one of the founding fathers of the German-American Mennonite community with this rich examination of a second generation leader caught between the idealism and isolationism of the founders and the newer attitude of practical accommodation to American ways.

Juhnke's well-integrated material on the origins, migrations, and doctrines of the various branches of the Mennonite movement serves as …

Review Of The Ojibwa Of Western Canada, 1780-1870 By Laura Peers, Edward J. Hedican Apr 1997

Review Of The Ojibwa Of Western Canada, 1780-1870 By Laura Peers, Edward J. Hedican

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This innovative work is an ethno-historical study of the Ojibwa migration from the Great Lakes region to the Plains. Building on earlier studies by Harold Hickerson (The Chippewa and Their Neighbors) and Charles Bishop (The Northern Ojibwa and the Fur Trade), particularly in the use of the Hudson's Bay Company Archives, Peers reconstructs processes of historical change over a ninety year period. She is not content, however, simply to document the historical record, but instead takes on a much broader challenge, and herein lies the major value of her study.

The Ojibwa of western Canada are …

International Service Learning, Harry C. Silcox, Torun E. Leek Apr 1997

International Service Learning, Harry C. Silcox, Torun E. Leek

International Service Learning & Community Engagement

It is clear that a network of international service learning is in its formative stage, the authors point out. We must not allow the politics of service programs in the U.S. to blind us to the opportunities in other parts of the world that will enable us to advance the theory and ideology of service learning.

Popular Music In A Transnational World: The Construction Of Local Identities In Singapore, Lily Kong Apr 1997

Popular Music In A Transnational World: The Construction Of Local Identities In Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

As an area of geographical inquiry, popular music has not been explored to any large extent. Where writings exist, they have been somewhat divorced from recent theoretical and methodological questions that have rejuvenated social and cultural geography. In this paper, I focus on one arena which geographers can develop in their analysis of popular music, namely, the exploration of local influences and global forces in the production of music. In so doing, I wish to explore how local resources intersect with global ones in a process of transculturation. Using the example of English songs by one particular songwriter and artiste …

Roma And Forced Migration: An Annotated Bibliography, Dana Neacsu Mar 1997

Roma And Forced Migration: An Annotated Bibliography, Dana Neacsu

Books

As of 1997 there were between seven and eight and a half million Roma living in Europe. While there was ample literature on the Roma, in those pre-Internet times, there was no annotated bibliography of relevant works. This selected annotated bibliography assembled texts directly concerned with the forced migration of Roma, as well as other books, articles, periodicals, and various collections which provide background information on the Roma and their socio-economic, political and legal history. All the texts came from the NY Public Library collection. The compilation and the annotations were written by Dana Neacsu, at that time, a Consultant …

Making Sense Of The Asian Success Story: An Integrative Framework, Chow Hou Wee, Gilbert Tan Mar 1997

Making Sense Of The Asian Success Story: An Integrative Framework, Chow Hou Wee, Gilbert Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The article focuses on Asian countries that have experienced economic growth over the past 50 years including Hong Kong, China; Japan; Singapore; South Korea and Taiwan. With the exception of Hong Kong, the economic success of the Asian countries has been attributed to the interventionist framework. Export-orientation is one strategy that is most associated with the success of the five Asian countries. The export-oriented strategy helped the five Asian countries in many ways. The ensuring growth of employment enabled the country to save and accumulate capital for reinvestment. The export-oriented strategy also positively affects the competitive advantages of the country. …

Public Housing In Singapore: Interpreting 'Quality' In The 1990s, Siew Eng Teo, Lily Kong Mar 1997

Public Housing In Singapore: Interpreting 'Quality' In The 1990s, Siew Eng Teo, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

While writings exist on various aspects of public housing in Singapore, recent developments in the 1990s have not yet been given any serious academic attention, Our intention in this paper is to focus on such developments, paying particular attention to the government's policy of providing quality housing, After setting the context of efforts at providing quality in the first three decades of public housing by the Housing and Development Board, we turn our attention specifically to the 1990s, focusing on three areas in which attempts are being made to improve quality, namely, the physical upgrading of older estates, the privatisation …

The Construction Of National Identity Through The Production Of Ritual And Spectacle: An Analysis Of National Day Parades In Singapore, Lily Kong, Brenda S. A. Yeoh Mar 1997

The Construction Of National Identity Through The Production Of Ritual And Spectacle: An Analysis Of National Day Parades In Singapore, Lily Kong, Brenda S. A. Yeoh

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper, we adopt the view that 'nation' and 'national identity' are social constructions, created to serve ideological ends. We discuss this in the specific empirical context of Singapore's National Day parades. By drawing on officially produced souvenir programmes and magazines, newspaper reports, and interviews with participants and spectators, we analyse the parades between 1965 and 1994, showing how, as an annual ritual and landscape spectacle, the parades succeed to a large extent in creating a sense of awe, wonderment and admiration. Discussion focuses on four aspects of the celebrations: the site of the parades, their display and theatricality, …

The Dominican Republic-- After The Caudillos, Emelio Betances, Hobard Spalding Jan 1997

The Dominican Republic-- After The Caudillos, Emelio Betances, Hobard Spalding

Sociology Faculty Publications

The Dominican Republic played a major role in the early history of NACLA, and it is therefore fitting that the country be re-examined in one of NACLA's thirtieth anniversary issues. It was largely in response to the 1965 U.S. invasion and occupation of the island that a group of academics, clergy and radical activists organized a 1966 conference called the North American Congress on Latin America. The "congress" stayed together beyond the conference, and in February, 1967, began publishing the NACLA Newsletter, which evolved into today's NACLA Report on the Americas.

No. 01: Covert Operations: Clandestine Migration, Temporary Work And Immigration Policy In South Africa, Jonathan Crush Jan 1997

No. 01: Covert Operations: Clandestine Migration, Temporary Work And Immigration Policy In South Africa, Jonathan Crush

Southern African Migration Programme

Significant numbers of foreign workers, both legal and undocumented, are engaged in temporary work in the mining, commercial agriculture and construction sectors in Gauteng, Northern Province, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu/Natal. The actual numbers involved are unknown and unknowable under existing systems of data collection and migration policy. The issue of temporary employment is inextricably liked to the broader issue of undocumented migration to South Africa. The Aliens Control Act is based on principles of exclusion and expulsion. Because non-South African temporary workers have few legal modes of access to the South African labour market, they are unprotected by law and vulnerable …

Multidimentional Citizenship: Educational Policy For The Twenty-First Century, John J. Cogan, Patricia Kristine Kubow

International Service Learning & Community Engagement

As we approach the end of this turbulent century and prepare to meet the challenges of the next, the question of what constitutes education for citizenship in various nations appropriate to the demands and needs of a rapidly changing global community is critical in both national and international contexts. The planet and the human family are facing an unprecedented set of challenges, issues and problems including the globalization of the economy, a significant level of deterioration in the quality of the global environment, rapidly changing technologies and the uses of same, and ethical and social issues. How does one respond …
