Like most of the luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance, its leading visual artist, Aaron Douglas, was not himself a product of Harlem.1 Although Winold Reiss and Alain Locke were to guide Douglas in the development of his artistic vision once he arrived in Harlem, his early years in Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska gave rise to both the communal values and the artistic sense of isolation that were to lead him to Harlem. It was in the black church and in Topeka's "cohesive and politically active" African-American community that Douglas first experienced black solidarity and embraced "the values of education …
Review Of Working With Latino Youth: Culture, Development, And Context By Joan D. Koss-Chioino And Luis A. Vargas, Fernando Rivera
Review Of Working With Latino Youth: Culture, Development, And Context By Joan D. Koss-Chioino And Luis A. Vargas, Fernando Rivera
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The mental health problems Latino youth face in the United States are often misunderstood and viewed as a lack of willingness to assimilate or contribute to society. Some mental health practitioners and administrators have a hard time understanding that Latino youth, more often than not, don't "fit" the diagnosis and psychological interventions they use working with youth from dominant racial and ethnic groups. Providing, as it does, a comprehensive approach to understanding the problems Latinos and Latinas encounter growing up in US society, Working with Latino Youth can help rectify this lack of understanding.
Koss-Chioino and Vargas successfully achieve a …
Death And Disability In The Heartland: Corporate (Mis)Conduct, Regulatory Responses, And The Plight Of Latino Workers In The Meatpacking Industry, Ann-Maria Wahl, Steven E. Gunkel, Thomas W. Sanchez
Death And Disability In The Heartland: Corporate (Mis)Conduct, Regulatory Responses, And The Plight Of Latino Workers In The Meatpacking Industry, Ann-Maria Wahl, Steven E. Gunkel, Thomas W. Sanchez
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Death and disability remain serious problems in the meatpacking industry, which increasingly depends on Latino workers. Here we examine these problems and the dynamics that heighten and minimize the hazards encountered in meatpacking plants. Drawing from published and unpublished sources, we provide statistical profiles and ethnographic accounts to capture the health and safety risks Latino workers face in the meatpacking plants of Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska. Guided by recent research in labor market segmentation and the politics of social regulation, we trace the increased risk of injury and illness for Latinos to three intersecting dynamics: corporate conduct and misconduct on …
Attitudes Of Selected Latino Oldtimers Toward Newcomers: A Photo Elicitation Study, D. A. Lopez
Attitudes Of Selected Latino Oldtimers Toward Newcomers: A Photo Elicitation Study, D. A. Lopez
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The Latino population in the Midwest has been increasing rapidly. Latinos have been in Omaha, Nebraska, since the late 1800s. However, the development of modern meatpacking plants and a low unemployment rate have resulted in a large population of "newcomers" to the city. Latino "oldtimers" differ from newcomers in their experiences. I examine, through photo elicitation, attitudes of a selected population of Latino oldtimers toward newcomers as contextualized through segmented assimilation. Results indicate oldtimers in this sample have some misgivings about newcomers. Furthermore, I argue that downward assimilation of Latino newcomers is likely given the conditions to which they migrate.
Health Care Utilization And The Status Of Latinos In Rural Meat Processing Communities, Joe Blankenau, Joni Boye-Beaman
Health Care Utilization And The Status Of Latinos In Rural Meat Processing Communities, Joe Blankenau, Joni Boye-Beaman
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Using interviews conducted in two Nebraska communities, we illustrate health-care challenges for Latinos in meat-processing communities. Two hundred twenty-one Latinos (48% male), primarily of Mexican descent, were interviewed face-to-face by bilingual interviewers. Fifteen percent of the respondents are between the ages of 20 and 24, 75% are between 25 and 44, and 10% are between 45 and 64. Nearly half have lived in the United States for five or fewer years. Aday's (1993) framework for predicting populations at risk is used to identify factors affecting health status and utilization. These factors include measures of human capital, social status, and social …

The preamble to The Convention on the Rights of the Child, "recalls the basic principles of the United Nations and specific provisions of certain relevant human rights treaties and proclamations; reaffirms the fact that children, because of their vulnerability, need special care and protection; and places special emphasis on the primary caring and protective responsibilities of the family, the need for legal and other protection of the child before and after birth, the importance of respect for the cultural values of the child's community, and the vital role of international cooperation in achieving the realization of children's rights" (UNICEF 2001). …
Factors Encouraging The Growth Of Sustainable Communities: A Jamaican Case Study, Eleanor Wint
Factors Encouraging The Growth Of Sustainable Communities: A Jamaican Case Study, Eleanor Wint
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The concept of sustainable communities assumes a process of social and/or economic development that has as a high priority, the needs of the future generation. However, models of social and economic development employed in developing countries, must rely heavily on political, social and psychological empowerment techniques being employed at the community level, in order to warrant any type of sustainability becoming apparent. A case study taken from Kingston, Jamaica recounts and examines the experience of a Social Work Unit/private company in partnership, becoming involved in a low-income community's drive for sustainable development. The paper will reflect on the intervention, the …

Political Culture And Women's Political Activity In Post Communist Ukraine A Case Study Of The 1994 Elections, Tonja M. Wilt
Political Culture And Women's Political Activity In Post Communist Ukraine A Case Study Of The 1994 Elections, Tonja M. Wilt
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This research identifies and examines two distinct political cultures in post-communist Ukraine, characterized by the presence of Soviet and non-Soviet influences. Soviet political culture is associated with East Ukrainian regions where Soviet policies of Russification, collectivization and urbanization were deeply entrenched. The non-Soviet political culture is present in Western Ukraine where said policies were least successful and the Ukrainian culture is more established.
The question posed in this thesis is: To what extent, if any, do regional political cultures influence women's political activity in Ukraine? This study focuses on the Soviet practice of appointing hundreds of women to the Supreme …
Peer Support As A Protective Factor In The Impact Of War On Adolescents In Lebanon, Nadine S. Fakhran
Peer Support As A Protective Factor In The Impact Of War On Adolescents In Lebanon, Nadine S. Fakhran
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Children exposed to situations of war have been shown to develop behavioral as well as psychological difficulties. Researchers have observed, however, that not all children manifest these difficulties in reaction to war situations. Therefore, scientists have attempted to look at resilient children, investigating protective and vulnerability factors in the child's environment. One such protective factor is social support. Although there have been several studies on social support, those studies have tended to focus on family support. There seems to be a void in the literature on the effects of peer support on post-traumatic stress reactions in children. The present study …
Review Of The Lakota Ritual Of The Sweat Lodge: History And Contemporary Practice By Raymond A. Bucko, Martin Brokenleg
Review Of The Lakota Ritual Of The Sweat Lodge: History And Contemporary Practice By Raymond A. Bucko, Martin Brokenleg
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Native Americans, including the Lakota of the Great Plains, are mistrustful of anthropologists. For four centuries, white explorers, settlers, and scholars have defined Native American life, culture, and values. Because these cultural records are kept in writing, people from western cultures regard them as authoritative. The result is the current tendency for readers to trust the records of a white investigator more than the spoken word of a Lakota. The mistrust Lakotas have of anthropologists is the result not only of inaccurate accounts but also the assumption that the recording authority has a "true" understanding that is more accurate than …

Achieving Growth Through Corporate Partnerships And Joint Ventures: Will Singapore's Strategic Leap Into The Region Work?, Ravinder K. Zutshi, Wee Liang Tan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
One of the characteristic features of the East Asian economic development strategy has been the interventionist role of the government in the economic sphere (Amsden 1989; Kwon 1994; Wade 1990; Zutshi and Gibbons 1998). Governments in East Asia have traditionally, worked closely with the private sector. As a result unique business systems embedded in networks and alliances have evolved in countries like Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Singapore (Hamilton and Biggard 1988). Singapore has attempted to extend this model of strategic cooperation beyond its borders into the region. Schein (1996) identifies a number of major development eras in the evolution of …
Little Squatter On The Osage Diminished Reserve: Reading Laura Ingalls Wilder's Kansas Indians, Frances W. Kaye
Little Squatter On The Osage Diminished Reserve: Reading Laura Ingalls Wilder's Kansas Indians, Frances W. Kaye
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Laura Ingalls Wilder was a person of her time and place. She fictionalized her memories to give what she honestly believed was the truest possible account-true in deeply human ways as well as in accurate details-of one family's settlement history on the Great Plains frontier. I have never really liked her work. While my sister read all the Little House books, I read ... Zane Grey. That I do not share Wilder's values and point of view is no argument against the books-I do not share Zane Grey's values and point of view, either. But Zane Grey is not held …

Occupational Segregation Of Women On The Great Plains, Ann Mari May, Robert Watrel
Occupational Segregation Of Women On The Great Plains, Ann Mari May, Robert Watrel
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Despite large increases in the participation of women in the paid labor force, occupational segregation by sex continues to be a significant characteristic of the labor market in the US. To better understand occupational segregation, we developed a new measure of occupational segregation that allows us to identify "female-dominated," "male-dominated," and "integrated" occupations. We use the new measure to examine differences in occupational segregation in the Great Plains states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas, compared with the US as a whole. Our results indicate that more women on the Great Plains are employed than expected, given male …
Review Of Uphill Against Water: The Great Dakota Water War By Peter Carrels, John M. Donahue
Review Of Uphill Against Water: The Great Dakota Water War By Peter Carrels, John M. Donahue
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Students in my Water, Culture, and Power course must read Marc Reisner's Cadillac Desert (1993), but Peter Carrels's Uphill Against Water will now become required reading as well. Carrels provides a grassroots perspective on twentieth-century water policy in the United States that complements the more macro analysis in Reisner's work. Writing in his hometown of Aberdeen, South Dakota, Carrels tells the story from the vantage point of farmers who were supposed to be the beneficiaries of the massive Oahe Irrigation Project in northeastern South Dakota. How over a thirty-year period they became its successful opponents is the story line of …
Review Of The Dynamics Of Native Politics: The Alberta Metis Experience By Joe Sawchuk, Chris Anderson
Review Of The Dynamics Of Native Politics: The Alberta Metis Experience By Joe Sawchuk, Chris Anderson
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Since at least the 1960s, Canadian Aboriginal political activity has witnessed a startling increase in both its breadth and intensity. This activism has increasingly voiced the concerns and frustrations of Aboriginal people through political organizations whose explicit mandate was and remains to lobby the provincial and federal governments on behalf of their constituents. There is considerable debate, however, about the extent to which these organizations actually represent progressive social change for Aboriginals in Canada or simply owe their "resistance" to the heavy influence of federal and provincial government funding.
