Review Of Earth And Sky: Visions Of The Cosmos In Native American Folklore Edited By Ray A. Williamson And Claire E. Farrer, Lee Irwin Jan 1995

Review Of Earth And Sky: Visions Of The Cosmos In Native American Folklore Edited By Ray A. Williamson And Claire E. Farrer, Lee Irwin

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This is a book for a wider audience than folklorists or anthropologists, though both will find substantive materials here for future research. It is a work that integrates a number of disciplinary perspectives-including ethnohistorical sources, archaeology, social theory, myth studies, religion and ritual, and astronomy- with remarkable economy and focus. The editors, Ray Williamson (from the United States Congress's Office of Technological Assessment) and Claire Farrer (an anthropologist at California State University at Chico), have illustrated the depth and complexities of Native American "Blue Archaeoastronomy" as a source for enhancing our understanding of diverse mythic worlds. The volume's essays range …

Review Of Black Elk: Holy Man Of The Oglala By Michael F. Steltenkamp, Lee Irwin Aug 1994

Review Of Black Elk: Holy Man Of The Oglala By Michael F. Steltenkamp, Lee Irwin

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The classic accounts of the Oglala holy man, Nicholas Black Elk, are three: Black Elk Speaks (1932) by John Neihardt, The Sacred Pipe (1953) by Joseph Epps Brown, and the later re-edited and annotated notes of the original Neihardt and Black Elk interviews published as The Sixth Grandfather (1986) by Raymond DeMallie. Michael Steltenkamp's (1993) account of Black Elk's years on the reservation after his conversion to Catholic Christianity is an essential fourth work that completes the circle of Black Elk's remarkable spiritual life. Working with a variety of sources, but primarily his notes and interviews of Lucy Black Elk, …

Walking The Sky: Visionary Traditions Of The Great Plains, Lee Irwin Jan 1994

Walking The Sky: Visionary Traditions Of The Great Plains, Lee Irwin

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The shared worldviews of the indigenous peoples of North America are rooted and linked in a rich pre-Columbian artifactual and oral past that is still highly active today. One perspective into these worlds is obtained by understanding the nature of dreams and visions. In traditional Native American cultures, such a perspective is an essential part of the search for spiritual knowledge where dreams and visions represent contacts with primordial sources of empowerment. To perceive this search for empowerment requires an appreciation of the visionary experience, an experience which has often been denied or marginalized in the dominant cultures.1

Review Of The Medicine Men: Oglala Sioux Ceremony And Healing., Beatrice Medicine Jan 1992

Review Of The Medicine Men: Oglala Sioux Ceremony And Healing., Beatrice Medicine

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

As a Lakota person, it seems more pertinent to me that those publications that deal with specific groups, i.e., Oglala, be reviewed by persons from that band. Tribally controlled colleges on reservations could possibly be sources for the reviews.

'Peace: A Gift Of God, A Human Task': Toward A Liberation Theology For Northern Ireland, David Miles Moore Jan 1992

'Peace: A Gift Of God, A Human Task': Toward A Liberation Theology For Northern Ireland, David Miles Moore

Honors Theses

PREFACE: I would have to cite the five months I spent in Cork, Ireland as the biggest motivating factor behind this paper. I knew next to nothing about Northern Ireland before this period. Soon after my arrival in Cork, however, I became fascinated with the socio-religious anomaly to the north of me. Since I became a religion major at Colby, I have always been interested in liberation theology. As I read about the poverty, injustice and violence that pervades Northern Ireland, I was reminded of the context in which Gustavo Gutierrez, Tissa Balasuriya, and Elsa Tamez write and live. The …

Review Of Renewing The World: Plains Indian Religion And Morality., J. Baird Callicott Jan 1989

Review Of Renewing The World: Plains Indian Religion And Morality., J. Baird Callicott

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Although at midcentury the distinguished anthropologist A. Irving Hallowell suggested a new field, "ethnometaphysics, " at the interface of philosophy and anthropology, there was no stampede to explore it. Philosophers for the most part remain Western cultural narcissists and chauvinists, while anthropologists labor to become scientifically "respectable."
