Language Use As Carrier Of Social Identity, Yuk-Yue Tong, Ying-Yi Hong, Sau-Lai Lee, Chi-Yue Chiu

In the present study, we examined the relationship of social identity (Hongkonger or Chinese) and the attitudes toward bilingual code switching in a conversation between a Hong Kong person and a Chinese Mainlander. Students from a local university in Hong Kong (N = 159) listened to a four-turn conversation between a Hong Kong person and a Mainlander in a wedding party. As expected, when the speaker converged to the Putonghua (the Mainland official language), those who claimed a Hongkonger identity judged the Hong Kong speaker less favourably than did those who claimed a Chinese identity. In addition, participants who claimed …

The relation between intergroup perceptions and peoples implicit theories of the malleability of human attributes or character was examined. We predicted that people who believe that human attributes are fixed (entity theorists) may also view a group as an entity and thus would rely on trait-based dimensions in social comparison to achieve group distinctiveness. By contrast, people who believe that human attributes are malleable (incremental theorists) may focus on the dynamic aspects of social groups (e.g., group goals) and thus would be less likely to rely on trait-based dimensions in social comparison. Moreover, such differential tendency was expected to become …

Review Of The Night Has A Naked Soul: Witchcraft And Sorcery Among The Western Cherokee. By Alan Kilpatrick, Pekka Hamalainen
Review Of The Night Has A Naked Soul: Witchcraft And Sorcery Among The Western Cherokee. By Alan Kilpatrick, Pekka Hamalainen
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This fascinating, slim volume provides a rare glimpse of the supernatural world of the' Cherokee Indians, a topic shielded by linguis.-" tic, cultural, and mental barriers. The Chero~ kees possess an extraordinary corpus of magical texts, recorded over one hundred and fifty yearsby their folk healers in small ledger notebooks .. These texts, written in the Sequoyah syllabary and known as idi:gawe:sdi, contain a large body of knowledge of such occult subjects as love magic, rainmaking, and protective charms. In The Night Has a Naked Soul, Alan Kilpatrick, an associate professor of American Indian studies at San Diego State …
East Vs. West: Strategic Marketing Management Meets The Asian Networks, George T. Haley, Chin Tiong Tan
East Vs. West: Strategic Marketing Management Meets The Asian Networks, George T. Haley, Chin Tiong Tan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Strategic management in Asia is different. Decision-making differs from that taught in Western, and even Asian, schools of business. In the last decade, the influence of Japanese management systems on Western management practice has become evident. Though the Japanese economy is the world's second largest, and Japan's population substantial, neither compares with the combined economies and combined populations of non-Japanese Asia. The influence of the most aggressive elements of the non-Japanese Asian business communities, the Overseas Chinese and Overseas Indian Networks cannot help to be felt on Western management practice. This article explains why this difference in decision-making styles exists, …

Owing to rapid internationalization of business activity, human resource development (HRD) has become increasingly important in recent years. This is especially true when domestic human resource management takes on international dimensions as it deals more with multicultural workforce. International HRD, much of it embodied in cross-cultural training, has been proposed by many scholars as a means of facilitating more effective interaction among managers, employees and customers from different national-cultural backgrounds. Despite the need for cross-cultural skills and the shortage of managers who possess these skills, most human resource decision-makers do nothing in terms of cross-cultural training for their employees. Studies …
Slovak Nationalism: Model Or Mirage?, Caroline Barker
Slovak Nationalism: Model Or Mirage?, Caroline Barker
New England Journal of Public Policy
In the face of an increasing number of bloody dissolutions of states around the world, the "velvet divorce" between Czechs and Slovaks has often been cited as evidence that such excesses can be avoided. This article, written before the October 1998 elections that saw the end of the government of Vladimir Meciar, seeks to explain that the peaceful split of these two nations is not an instance that can be replicated elsewhere but grows from the unique nature of Slovak nationalism. The article traces the historical evolution of Slovak nationalism and challenges the view that it has ever been a …
Monitoring Elections In El Salvador And Nicaragua, Jack Spence
Monitoring Elections In El Salvador And Nicaragua, Jack Spence
New England Journal of Public Policy
I observed the February 1990 elections in Nicaragua as a member of both the Latin American Studies Association observation team and that of Hemisphere Initiatives, a group with which I have worked. In El Salvador I headed the Hemisphere Initiatives team. I visited Nicaragua five times during the electoral period, and for El Salvador, for once my academic calendar coincided with Salvadoran history. A sabbatical in the last academic year allowed me to be there during the electoral period.
I should say by way of comparison with Fred Gamst's presentation about Ethiopia that Nicaragua and El Salvador are ethnically and …

Review Of Native American Verbal Art: Texts And Contexts By William M. Clements, Linda Lizut Herstern
Review Of Native American Verbal Art: Texts And Contexts By William M. Clements, Linda Lizut Herstern
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Native American Verbal Art should be required reading for all teachers of American literature committed to teaching translations from the Native American oral tradition. William Clements's study stands as a companion to The Sixth Grandfather (1984), Raymond DeMallie's account of the textual creation of Black Elk Speaks. Using an historical approach, Clements reveals the problems of translating traditional oratory, including the translator's frequent ignorance of the Native language being translated. (While some translators have worked with a bilingual intermediary, many have simply re-rendered previous translations without reference to the Native language text.)
Clements examines in some depth the practices …
Why Do Not All Separatist Movements Aim For Secession? The Cases Of Chechnia And Tatarstan, Mesut Acar
Why Do Not All Separatist Movements Aim For Secession? The Cases Of Chechnia And Tatarstan, Mesut Acar
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
Which ethnic groups are more likely to secede is a debated question among scholars. One view, as proposed by Immanuel Wallerstein, holds that ethnic groups living in economically advanced regions are more likely to secede. In contrast, other scholars like Donald Horowitz claim that backward groups in backward regions are more likely to secede. One aim of this thesis is to explore which view has better explanatory power for two republics in the Russian Federation: the Republic of Chechnia and the Republic of Tatarstan. In 1992 they were the two most separatist regions in the Russia. Later they diverged, and …
Review Of Contented Among Strangers: Rural German Speaking Women And Their Families In The Nineteenth- Century Midwest By Linda Schelbitzki Pickle, Royden Loewen
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Here is an important study that joins the growing number of histories of rural American women. Its strengths are many. First, it uncovers the complex and multi-layered worlds of German-speaking immigrants; Linda Schelbitzki Pickle, a professor of German and Foreign Languages, uses her linguistic dexterity to unveil a rich cache of German-language diaries, letters, and memoirs, delivering it to North American readers in finely-crafted English narrative. The work is also remarkably sensitive to German immigrant diversity; although the immigrant groups hail from five Midwest states-Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska-they represent both Dreisziger Germans and "Germans from Russia," religious and …
Review Of Myths And Traditions Of The Arikara Indians By Douglas R. Parks, Tressa Berman
Review Of Myths And Traditions Of The Arikara Indians By Douglas R. Parks, Tressa Berman
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Once again, Douglas Parks has offered an unsurpassed account of Arikara oral traditions by carefully selecting and elaborating upon his earlier, though less accessible, Traditional Narratives of the Arikara Indians (University of Nebraska Press, 1991, in four volumes). Parks's careful English translations of a range of Arikara narratives fulfill the interests of specialists and non-specialists alike through detailed descriptions of both stories and storytellers. Old stories become infused with new life as we learn more about the narrators themselves and the various performative contexts in which stories get told. If this was an attempt on Parks's part to bring the …
Review Of Native American Verbal Art: Texts And Contexts By William M. Clements, Paul G. Zolbrod
Review Of Native American Verbal Art: Texts And Contexts By William M. Clements, Paul G. Zolbrod
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
In addressing what its author calls "The Ethnopoetics Movement," this sensible, well-researched volume demonstrates that recording Native American verbal art is not a new enterprise, tracing it back to seventeenth-century Jesuit records and following it through the present-day. Nor has the task of converting tribal discourse to literature ever been easy. Along with the inevitable hazards of translation, cultural barriers intrude, especially in the transfer of oral performance to the silent page.
William Clements lays a clear foundation for a reasonable perspective. Earlier commentators, he writes, "uncritically assumed" that printed records of orally-based tribal material "provide absolutely reliable information about …

On Being Agents Of God's Peace: Relationship And Roles Of The Roman Catholic Church In Croatia And The Serbian Orthodox Church In Ethnic Conflicts In Former Yugoslavia, Tatjana Peric
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Former Yugoslavia was a small country on the Balkan peninsula in south-east Europe - one of the most ethnically, linguistically, and religiously complicated areas of the world. Its peoples have gained dark fame for the first time in their history during the second decade of the twentieth century, causing the first world-wide war ever. The other event that brought the area into the spotlight was the civil war in Croatia and Bosnia, two of the six former Yugoslav republics - the others are Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. The civil strife, lasting from 1991 to the end of 1995, was …

Is it possible to look out over the Ural Mountains and see Appalachia? To find the character of the American West in the vast open space of Siberia? To smell the citrus and feel the warm sun of the Black Sea coast and be struck with a sense of Florida?
This book is based on just such an idea: that we can look beyond our borders and discover fundamental realities about places that transcend differences of culture, language, and politics. Five American and four Russian geographers wrote this book to provide glimpses of understanding about the United States and Russia. …

No. 04: Silenced By Nation-Building: African Immigrants And Language Policy In The New South Africa, Maxine Reitzes, Nigel Crawhall
Southern African Migration Programme
All people in South Africa have constitutionallyguaranteed language rights. To what extent do these rights apply to non-citizens and are they actually observed by various state departments and officials? This report presents the results of a preliminary investigation into this question by focusing on the rights and treatment of foreigners in South Africa, particularly foreigners from other African countries.
The report was commissioned by the Southern African Migration Project (SAMP) as part of a broader programme to understand the reception and treatment of non-South Africans in the new South Africa. Our aim, as authors, is to encourage government departments and …
Review Of Writings In Indian History, 1985-1990 Compiled By Jay Miller, Colin G. Calloway, And Richard A. Sattler, Joseph B. Herring
Review Of Writings In Indian History, 1985-1990 Compiled By Jay Miller, Colin G. Calloway, And Richard A. Sattler, Joseph B. Herring
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Students of North American Indian history should applaud Miller, Calloway, and Sattler for producing this splendid reference guide. The volume extends the work of Francis Paul Prucha, who edited two bibliographies referencing thousands of books, journals, news articles, governmental documents, and other sources on Indian history and Indian-white relations. The tremendous growth in scholarship regarding the American Indian past would have been far less impressive without Prucha's contribution. The compilers of this new volume, working under the aegis of the Newberry Library's D'Arcy McNickle Center, have made it possible for that growth in scholarship to continue.
Increasingly, as the compilers …
Review Of Ella Deloria's Iron Hawk By Julian Rice, Kelly Morgan
Review Of Ella Deloria's Iron Hawk By Julian Rice, Kelly Morgan
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Julian Rice organizes, critiques, and analyzes one of Ella Cara Deloria's lifetime achievements, the writing of a Lakota epic. His volume provides a brief history of Lakota linguistics as well as recognition of Deloria's contributions to maintaining oral traditions. Six critical essays follow the Lakota and English texts and are characteristic of Rice's ability to research and criticize Deloria's work from a linguistic perspective. What he has produced is a useful reference text for researching and teaching Lakota linguistics through the epic story of Iron Hawk.
This, Rice's second of three books on Lakota oral traditions since 1992, is …
Review Of Dutch Farmer In The Missouri Valley: The Life And Letters Of Ulbe Eringa, 1866-1950 By Brian W. Beltman, Royden Loewen
Review Of Dutch Farmer In The Missouri Valley: The Life And Letters Of Ulbe Eringa, 1866-1950 By Brian W. Beltman, Royden Loewen
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
How large should an immigrant community be to shed light effectively on the wider immigrant experience? This is a subject of frequent debate. Here is an excellent study of immigration to the American Midwest based on a single person, a Dutch farmer, Ulbe Eringa. And for the better part of the book, Eringa himself speaks through memoir and letter, translated from the Dutch by a daughter.
The narration and reproduced texts recreate Eringa's life story. It begins with his birth in 1866 to a dairy farming family in western Friesland and continues through his early formative years in Calvinist schools …
Review Of Living Landscapes Of Kansas Text By O.J. Reichman, Robert Duncan
Review Of Living Landscapes Of Kansas Text By O.J. Reichman, Robert Duncan
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Co-authors O.J. Reichman (text) and Steve Mulligan (photography) have produced a book illustrating the natural beauty of Kansas. This prairie state known to many through its rich history of outlaws and cattle towns has an equally rich but sometimes overlooked natural landscape. To the casual observer the landscape may appear "relatively flat and uniform," but Reichman has an appreciation for this "midrange" scale, more accessible perhaps than the monumentality of mountains or coasts. Reichman and Mulligan have surveyed the state selecting natural sights formed through a combination of earth, fire, wind, and water. Through Reichman's visual perception and impressive linguistic …

To those who are interested in learning about (1) the language and inter- pretation of emotion in South and East Asian thought, (2) the philosoph- ical debates surrounding the nature and ethics of emotion, and (3) ways of doing comparative philosophy, Emotions in Asian Thought, edited by Joel Marks and Roger T. Ames, will not disappoint. Individually, the twelve essays collected here display considerable erudition and/or philosophical rigor.
Comparing The Discourse Of Popular Politics In Korea And China: From Civil Society To Social Movements, William A. Callahan
Comparing The Discourse Of Popular Politics In Korea And China: From Civil Society To Social Movements, William A. Callahan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The Korea Journal’s series of articles addressing the question of civil society are a timely addition to the struggle over the discourse of democracy which is common to many countries in Pacific Asia. Since Professor Han Sang-Jin’s article does an excellent job of critically summarizing Chung Chulhee, Cho Hein and David Steinberg’s arti cles on Korean civil society, it seems that there is not much more to be said on the topic. To add to this discussion I will try to expand the discourse geographically and conceptually. Geographically, I will compare the discourse of popular politics in Korea with that …
