Patterns Of Promise Mapping The Plains And Prairies, 1800-1860, John L. Allen Jan 1984

Patterns Of Promise Mapping The Plains And Prairies, 1800-1860, John L. Allen

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

During the great drive of the American people to the Pacific, the vast area lying between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains was, for the better part of the nineteenth century, a zone of passage rather than a region of settlement. "Crossing the plains" became an epithet for what, to many, was a tedious but necessary part of a long journey to the dramatic Rockies, the exotic Southwest, or the bucolic Pacific Coast. In the romanticism that gripped America during the years between the opening of the nineteenth century and the Civil War, the supposedly featureless plains were largely …

Mapping The North American Plains An Introduction, Gary E. Moulton Jan 1984

Mapping The North American Plains An Introduction, Gary E. Moulton

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Exploration, no matter how scientifically oriented or technologically involved, has been popularly viewed as mostly romantic adventure. From Renaissance mariners to "right stuff" astronauts, explorers have been remembered more for their experiences than for their accomplishments. Partly to correct this notion, the Center for Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln sponsored the symposium Mapping the North American Plains in April 1983, to show achievements in cartography on the North American plains from earliest times to the present. Twelve speakers from the United States, Canada, and England presented addresses on a variety of topics within the theme. Four of …

Review Of Fur Trade And Exploration: Opening The Far Northwest, 1821-1852 By Theodore J. Karamanski, John Warkentin

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Historians of Canadian exploration have repeatedly told the tale of the great journeys that made known the major lineaments of northern North America, but rarely can one find an integrated account of the exploration of a major region. Theodore Karamanski makes an important contribution to the exploration literature of North America not only by providing a comprehensive history of the exploration by Euro-americans of northwestern Canada, a region larger than many countries, but also by providing much new information on the course of individual exploratory journeys within a context where the significance of th~ travels can be understood. This is …

The Scientific Instruments Of The Lewis And Clark Expedition, Silvio A. Bedini Jan 1984

The Scientific Instruments Of The Lewis And Clark Expedition, Silvio A. Bedini

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The Lewis and Clark expedition, "the most consequential and romantic peace-time achievement in American history," had its genesis in the mind of Thomas Jefferson fully two decades before the exploring party departed from Pittsburgh on 31 August 1803. The need to determine the character and . expanse of the western regions of the continent lingered in his mind, and during the intervening years he encouraged three unsuccessful attempts to explore them. After he assumed the presidency in 1801, he was finally able to bring his dream to realization. The venture not only achieved all that Jefferson had hoped, but also …

"A Chart In His Way" Indian Cartography And The Lewis And Clark Expedition, James P. Ronda Jan 1984

"A Chart In His Way" Indian Cartography And The Lewis And Clark Expedition, James P. Ronda

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The sixteenth of January 1805 was not the kind of day Lewis and Clark would have chosen for calm deliberation and the thoughtful exchange of cartographic information. On that cold Dakota day, Fort Mandan was the scene of angry words and hostile gestures as Mandans and Hidatsas traded jeers and insults. While Lewis and Clark watched helplessly, Hidatsa warriors from the village of Menetarra charged Mandans with spreading malicious rumors designed to breed fear and keep Hidatsas away from the expedition. As the tough talk flew higher, the expedition's hopes for diplomacy sank. But in the midst of the bitterness …

Review Of Atlas Of The Lewis And Clark Expedition Edited By Gary Moulton & The Journals Of The Lewis And Clark Expedition, John L. Allen

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Revised editions of previously existing works of scholarship are not normally very exciting. They may include some new discoveries and some new interpretations and, by virtue of the benefits of hindsight, be marginally better than their predecessors. Therefore, anyone who may wish to dismiss this new version of the atlas of the Lewis and Clark journals as a "mere" re-edition of the earlier version edited by Reuben Gold Thwaites had better be advised: this new atlas is a great deal more than just are-editing of the Thwaites atlas. And it is very exciting indeed. The new Moulton atlas varies from …

Across The 49th Thunderstorms In The Northern Great Plains, Alec H. Paul Oct 1983

Across The 49th Thunderstorms In The Northern Great Plains, Alec H. Paul

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Hail, lightning, flash floods, erosion, severe gusty winds, and tornadoes produce multimillion- dollar losses to the economy of the northern plains each summer. Research into these meteorological phenomena has been fragmented by the presence of political boundaries in the Great Plains, especially the 49th parallel, which separates the United States and Canada. Perceptions of and responses to the thunderstorm hazard still differ north and south of the border. Tornadoes, for example, have only recently appeared in the weather forecasts for the Canadian prairies, and such responses to summer storms as weather modification experiments and hail insurance coverage have been made …

Escape From The Great Plains The Icelanders In North Dakota And Alberta, Howard Palmer Oct 1983

Escape From The Great Plains The Icelanders In North Dakota And Alberta, Howard Palmer

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Immigration historians in Canada and the United States are becoming aware of the need to look at immigration history within the larger context of North American history. Canadian immigration patterns have been affected, indirectly, almost as much by American immigration policy as by Canadian policy. Within many ethnic groups in North America, there has been a significant exchange of people and cultural patterns between Canada and the United States. Marcus Lee Hansen and John Brebner first looked at the interchange of people between Canada and the United States in their pioneering work, The Mingling of the Canadian and American Peoples …

Nineteenth-Century Patterns Of Railroad Development On The Great Plains, Russell S. Kirby Jul 1983

Nineteenth-Century Patterns Of Railroad Development On The Great Plains, Russell S. Kirby

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The North American Great Plains experienced rapid settlement and economic growth from 1870 to 1914. The advance of settlement and the development of local economy, while generally contiguous, were by no means uniform. Soil conditions, underground water supplies, the network of rivers and streams, rainfall, and growing season are all attributes of the physical environment that vary across the plains both longitudinally and latitudinally. In addition, the extent of effective settlement in the Mississippi River valley, the natural starting point for westward expansion onto the plains, varied considerably in 1865. Given these economic and environmental preconditions, it is not surprising …

Pioneer Landscape Paintings In Australia And The United States, R. Leslie Heathcote Jul 1983

Pioneer Landscape Paintings In Australia And The United States, R. Leslie Heathcote

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The European invasion of Australia and the American West in the nineteenth century brought a massive transformation of landscapes in the two continents through conflict with the indigenous populations and by the introduction of new and more intensive systems of resource use. As historians and historical geographers have acknowledged, the invasion was generally well documented, not only by the more literate pioneers and contemporaries but also, more importantly for any statistical analysis, by the emerging bureaucracies that administered the transfers of lands and collected the facts of land settlement, which the new societies saw as evidence of the success of …

General Karl N. Haushofer And Geopolitik, David P. Benorden Jul 1983

General Karl N. Haushofer And Geopolitik, David P. Benorden

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this research is to trace the mainstream of German and related geopolitical philosophy and the various aspects that influenced the philosophy from 1800 to 1945. Two themes evolved: Political Geography and Nationalism. Along with economic considerations, these themes were fused into Geopolitik by Karl Haushofer and his followers in Germany following the end of World War I.

The goal of this work is to trace Geopolitik to discover the significance of its implications, what was behind it, and what were its real objectives. Geopolitik is a German-developed "science'' based on doctrines and practices with its origins in …

Review Of The Tejano Community, 1836-1900 By Arnoldo De Leon, Richard L. Nostrand Apr 1983

Review Of The Tejano Community, 1836-1900 By Arnoldo De Leon, Richard L. Nostrand

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Persons of Spanish-Indian or Mexican descent who were incorporated into the United States in the nineteenth century belonged to one of three major subcultures: the Californio, the manito (Hispanos of New Mexico and Colorado), or the Tejano. Leonard Pitt has written a comprehensive social history of the Californio (1966), and now Arnoldo De Leon gives us a counterpart volume on the Tejano. De Leon's purpose is to capture the essence of the "ordinary" Tejano in Central, South, and West Texas between Texas Independence (1836) and the turn of the century, and he develops the theme that in …

Prairie Poetry And Metaphors Of Plain/S Space, Laurie Ricou Apr 1983

Prairie Poetry And Metaphors Of Plain/S Space, Laurie Ricou

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

McAlmon's Chinese Opera, the most significant prairie poem from Canada since Robert Kroetsch's Seed Catalogue and Eli Mandel's Out of Place, concerns "understand[ ing) modern writing" more than it does "the Mid-West." Indeed, it is only by the most expansive definition a prairie poem at all. Yet it is an appropriate source of epigraph, not only because it touches on metaphor, space, and poetry, but because its emphasis is characteristic of a shift in plains poetry and in its criticism, which prompts this essay. Furthermore, as a Canadian poet's tribute to a neglected American modernist, Scobie's poem might …

The Origin Of Ranching In Western Canada American Diffusion Or Victorian Transplant?, Simon M. Evans Apr 1983

The Origin Of Ranching In Western Canada American Diffusion Or Victorian Transplant?, Simon M. Evans

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

During the last quarter of the nineteenth century, a number of factors combined to promote the rapid advance of the ranching frontier throughout the Great Plains of North America. The demands of rapidly growing urban populations in the northeastern United States and north western Europe provided an apparently insatiable market for meat. The grasslands were linked to these markets by an expanding railway network and steamships that crossed the Atlantic on regular schedules. Rumors of the huge profits to be made from investments in mines, railways, and ranges lured a flood of risk capital to the West. The interplay of …

Far Corner Of The Strange Empire Central Alberta On The Eve Of Homestead Settlement, William C. Wonders

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In the latter part of the nineteenth century, what is now central Alberta was a region in transition. For centuries the area had been inhabited by native Indian peoples, but with the advance of homestead settlement, it became a marginal part of what Joseph Howard has called the "strange empire," a portion of the northern Great Plains that was marked by unrest at the end of one era and the beginning of another. The changes that affected the Red River Valley and later the Saskatchewan Valley had significant local repercussions in this far corner of the "empire," the valley of …

Review Of The Collapse Of Small Towns On The Great Plains: A Bibliography By Nancy Burns, Brian W. Blouet Apr 1983

Review Of The Collapse Of Small Towns On The Great Plains: A Bibliography By Nancy Burns, Brian W. Blouet

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This short essay and bibliography on small towns on the plains is a useful guide to the literature on the decline of small service centers. In the introductory essay Burns describes alterations in the settlement pattern related to social, economic, and technological change. It is a valuable summary, although the reader will encounter one or two problems. For example, the definition of the Great Plains that is given on page 5 is very broad, and it conflicts with the usage employed by many of the authors summarized later.

The bibliography has been carefully selected. It is not intended to be …

The Minnesota Studies In International Development Program At The University Of Minnesota, Thomas O'Toole

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The Minnesota Studies in International Development Program is a new program to engage University of Minnesota students and faculty in systematic, long term cooperative research with community outreach to individuals in Third World countries who are involved in development work. The program: I) involves Americans and people in Third World countries directly in a common task so that they may learn from one another, 2) brings the tools of science (both Western and non-Western) to bear on the development of less developed nations, 3) helps internationalize the curriculum of the University, and 4) helps replenish the dwindling stock of professionally …

Ubersicht Der Ergebnisse Der Ungarischen Zoologischen Expeditionen In Der Mongolischen Volksrepublik 1963-1968, Zoltan Kaszab

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298
