The 1992 Secession Movement In Southwest Kansas, Peter J. Mccormick Jan 1995

The 1992 Secession Movement In Southwest Kansas, Peter J. Mccormick

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In May of 1992 the Kansas state legislature approved and Governor Joan Finney signed into law a new school finance formula that adversely affected several southwest Kansas counties. The new bill provided for a blanket mill levy of 32 mills ($32 in taxes for every $1000 assessed valuation) to be spread across the state. It also restricted funding to a maximum of $3600 per student. The effects in the southwest were drastic. Many districts there, accustomed to setting their own tax rates and to retaining all monies collected, spent upward of $5000 per student on tax levies below 20 mills. …

The Front .. Gabled Log Cabin And The Role Of The Great Plains In The Formation Of The Mountain West's Built Landscape, Jon T. Kilpinen Jan 1995

The Front .. Gabled Log Cabin And The Role Of The Great Plains In The Formation Of The Mountain West's Built Landscape, Jon T. Kilpinen

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Students of American material culture have often viewed the arid, largely treeless Great Plains as an innovative source region of various aspects of western culture, especially those that gained expression on the landscape. While barbed wire and sod construction are two familiar examples, another exists in the front-gabled log dwelling, the dominant traditional building form of the Mountain and Inter-mountain Western frontier. Because the front-gabled log dwelling was indeed common on the Plains and reputedly absent in the forested, eastern United States, scholars have identified the Great Plains as the source region of this vernacular floorplan. Recent field and secondary …

Review Of North American Cattle-Ranching Frontiers: Origins, Diffusion, And Differentiation By Terry G. Jordan, Brad A. Bays Jan 1995

Review Of North American Cattle-Ranching Frontiers: Origins, Diffusion, And Differentiation By Terry G. Jordan, Brad A. Bays

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In this important companion to his earlier book, The American Backwoods Frontier, Terry Jordan has again taken the study of cultural diffusion into a new realm of inquiry and interpretation. Although mainly a synthesis of a vast and interdisciplinary literature, North American Cattle Ranching Frontiers offers a revisionist explanation of the origins, spread, and patterns of cattle ranching in most of North America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. This study will prove to be an even more innovative and controversial work than Backwoods, for the questions asked and the solutions provided are grand ones indeed. A cultural geographer, Jordan tailors …

Some Observations On The Labor Force Of The Canadian Ranching Frontier During Its Golden Age, 1882 .. 1901, Simon M. Evans Jan 1995

Some Observations On The Labor Force Of The Canadian Ranching Frontier During Its Golden Age, 1882 .. 1901, Simon M. Evans

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

It is more than a decade since scholars like L. G. Thomas and David H. Breen challenged the assumption that the Canadian ranching frontier was a straightforward case of technological and land-use diffusion from the United States. Breen argued that the Canadian government had played a significant role in bringing the range cattle industry into being within the North West Territories during the 1880s and went on to trace the manner in which the Department of the Interior overtly supported the ranchers for the next twenty years. Under this regulatory umbrella, upheld by the forceful presence of the North West …

Review Of An Unspeakable Sadness: The Dispossession Of The Nebraska Indians By David J. Wishart, Francis Paul Prucha Jan 1995

Review Of An Unspeakable Sadness: The Dispossession Of The Nebraska Indians By David J. Wishart, Francis Paul Prucha

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This is a well-written and authoritative book, but it is not a pleasant book to read, for it is a story of unremitting sadness. It traces the nineteenth-century history of four Indian tribes whose homelands in 1800 covered what is now the eastern two-thirds of the state of Nebraska-the Omahas and the Otoe-Missourias along the Missouri River, the Pone as north of the Niobrara River near its mouth, and the Pawnees (in four bands) in the central area of the state.

Sense Of Place In The Prairie Environment Settlement And Ecology In Rural Geary County, Kansas, Nina Veregge Jan 1995

Sense Of Place In The Prairie Environment Settlement And Ecology In Rural Geary County, Kansas, Nina Veregge

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Many people who drive across Kansas on the Interstate or on Route 50 see the state as a single, unchanging stretch of treeless plain. A more perceptive observer witnesses the gradual transition from the east to the west: from rolling hills and wooded vales to wide open grassland and sage plain; from corn to winter wheat; from farms to ranches and feedlots; from running streams to dry washes; from humidity on a summer day that is relieved only by constant wind to dry heat blown across grassland untempered by stream valley microclimates. It appears a seamless transition where distinctions are …

Bluestem And Tussock Fire And Pastoralism In The Flint Hills Of Kansas And The Tussock Grasslands Of New Zealand, James F. Hoy, Thomas D. Isern Jan 1995

Bluestem And Tussock Fire And Pastoralism In The Flint Hills Of Kansas And The Tussock Grasslands Of New Zealand, James F. Hoy, Thomas D. Isern

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The ghost of Lady Barker haunts public discourse on the question of burning tussock grassland in New Zealand. The image of this gentle English woman, author of the Canterbury classic Station Life in New Zealand, transformed into a pastoral pyromaniac professing "the exceeding joy of 'burning,'" is compelling. She contests with friends over who can set the most magnificent blaze, exults at solitary cabbage trees exploding into flame, and regrets that she was not there to see the first blaze rage across the plains. Of this ritual, she says, she and her friends "never were allowed to have half …

Using Known Populations Of Pronghorn To Evaluate Sampling Plans And Estimators, Kathy M. Kraft, Douglas H. Johnson, Jack M. Samuelson, Stephen H. Allen Jan 1995

Using Known Populations Of Pronghorn To Evaluate Sampling Plans And Estimators, Kathy M. Kraft, Douglas H. Johnson, Jack M. Samuelson, Stephen H. Allen

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Although sampling plans and estimators of abundance have good theoretical properties, their performance in real situations is rarely assessed because true population sizes are unknown. We evaluated widely used sampling plans and estimators of population size on 3 known clustered distributions of pronghorn (Antilocapra americana). Our criteria were accuracy of the estimate, coverage of 95% confidence intervals, and cost. Sampling plans were combinations of sampling intensities (16, 33, and 50%), sample selection (simple random sampling without replacement, systematic sampling, and probability proportional to size sampling with replacement), and stratification. We paired sampling plans with suitable estimators (simple, ratio, …

Music And Cultural Politics: Ideology And Resistance In Singapore, Lily Kong Jan 1995

Music And Cultural Politics: Ideology And Resistance In Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper focuses on popular music written and produced by Singaporeans to illustrate the nature of social relationships based on ideological hegemony and resistance. Analysis is based on two groups of music: 'national' songs supported by the government in the 'Sing Singapore' programme; and songs brought together in Not the Singapore song book. Interviews with local lyricists and analysis of video productions provide supplementary information. Music is used by the ruling elite to perpetuate certain ideologies aimed at political socialization and to inculcate a civil religion that directs favour and fervour towards the nation. Music is also a form of …

Bioarchaeology And Cod Fisheries: A New Source Of Evidence, Thomas Amorosi, Thomas H. Mcgovern, Sophia Perdikaris Oct 1994

Bioarchaeology And Cod Fisheries: A New Source Of Evidence, Thomas Amorosi, Thomas H. Mcgovern, Sophia Perdikaris

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Archaeological excavations in the North Atlantic basin over the past two decades have recovered large amounts of fishbones from datable deposits extending back over 8000 years in some areas. Coverage of the last 1000 years (with particular emphasis on the climatic cooling of the “Little Ice Age”) is increasingly complete. Recent research makes it possible to reconstruct live lengths from commonly recovered fishbone elements. Preliminary findings indicate that cod of 1 to 1.5 m were being regularly taken in the eleventh to nineteenth centuries throughout the North Atlantic. Changes in fish size and mix of species taken probably reflect technological …

Kiowa Powwows: Tribal Identity Through The Continuity Of The Gourd Dance, Benjamin R. Kracht Aug 1994

Kiowa Powwows: Tribal Identity Through The Continuity Of The Gourd Dance, Benjamin R. Kracht

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Today, intertribal participants at Southern Plains powwows (Oklahoma and Texas) celebrate common history and culture-their sense of "Indianness"-through the enactment of ceremonial song and dance. The Kiowa playa central and assertive role in the Southern Plains powwow network. and they use the Gourd Dance as the vehicle to identify their "Kiowaness." The thesis of this paper is that the Kiowa continue to maintain their tribal identity through performances of the Gourd Dance. which they claim as their own. The maintenance of identity is traced from the late nineteenth century through the evolution of Kiowa dances leading up to the Gourd …

Review Of The Changing Social Geography Of Canadian Cities By Larry S. Bourne And David F. Ley, Abraham Akkerman Aug 1994

Review Of The Changing Social Geography Of Canadian Cities By Larry S. Bourne And David F. Ley, Abraham Akkerman

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Over the years reviewers have grown weary of edited volumes. Some recent compendia of geographic research on social change seem to have only confirmed this skeptical altitude. The present book, however, is an exception. The articles were specifically commissioned by the editors according to a well-structured division into nineteen chapters within four major parts. The editors have been careful to focus on clearly defined issues, thus avoiding the trap of misdirection into which some other edited material on this subject has fallen recently. As a result, the book succeeds, overall, in a comprehensive identification of factors and effects relating to …

Review Of Native American Dance: Ceremonies And Social Traditions By Charlotte Heth, Eric J. Jolly Aug 1994

Review Of Native American Dance: Ceremonies And Social Traditions By Charlotte Heth, Eric J. Jolly

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Native American Dance attempts to capture in picture and words life itself across the span of time and the people of the Americas. This is an ambitious project that seeks to identify many of the worlds and peoples of the Americas through their dance and its drama.

The photographs and plates of this books are rich, striking, and full of detail. So much so that one could be lulled into expecting that the oversize volume would serve best as a browsing volume that creates coffee table impressions. Indeed, the scope of this work precludes a detailed text from being developed …

The Politics Of Retribalization: The Northern Ponca Case, Beth Ritter Aug 1994

The Politics Of Retribalization: The Northern Ponca Case, Beth Ritter

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The recently restored Ponca Tribe of Nebraska has faced considerable challenges to the expression of their tribalism throughout the contact period. As a small. prairie-plains tribe the Ponca have endured the ravages of epidemic disease. land cessions. dispossession and removal. assimilation and finally in 1962. the outright termination of their status as a federally recognized tribe. The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska has been granted the opportunity to attempt retribalization with the 1990 Congressional restoration of their recognized status. The historical circumstances which have contributed to the assaults on their political and cultural identity will be explored within the larger framework …

Director's Note - Volume 4, Number 2, August 1994, John R. Wunder

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This issue marks an end of an era for Great Plains Research. Begun in 1990 as a path breaking regional interdisciplinary science and social science journal, Great Plains Research is now poised for its fifth year of existence. Recently giving it a strong vote of confidence was a review panel chosen from the Fellows of the Center for Great Plains Studies to evaluate GPR. Their report issued in the spring of 1994 noted that because of the high quality of its initial editing and article submissions, the journal has quickly established itself as a quality scientific scholarly publication with …

Review Of Archaeology, History, And Custer's Last Battle: The Little Big Horn Reexamined By Richard Allan Fox, Jr, Mark F. Baumler Aug 1994

Review Of Archaeology, History, And Custer's Last Battle: The Little Big Horn Reexamined By Richard Allan Fox, Jr, Mark F. Baumler

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Already the subject of official inquiry, interviews, innumerable articles, books, symposia, movies, recreations, demonstrations, and undoubtedly more than one barroom fight-one could legitimately ask: is there anything new left to be said about Custer's' 'Last Stand" at the battle of the Little Big Horn? To the delight of some and the dismay of others, this book answers forthrightly in the affirmative and it does so convincingly.

Fox's contribution to previous efforts (both scholarly and otherwise) derives from the field of archaeology-a relative newcomer to the discussion surrounding the events of June 25, 1876. Using the material remains of the battle …

Urban Conservation In Singapore: A Survey Of State Policies And Popular Attitudes, Lily Kong, Brenda S. A. Yeoh Mar 1994

Urban Conservation In Singapore: A Survey Of State Policies And Popular Attitudes, Lily Kong, Brenda S. A. Yeoh

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper focuses on the intersection of state policies and popular attitudes towards urban conservation in Singapore. It first reviews changing state policies which have shaped the built environment from slum clearance in the 1950s and 1960s to the conservation of the city's historic districts in the 1980s and 1990s. It then explores the degree of convergence between the state and the public in terms of the meaning and purposes of conservation, the question of whose heritage to conserve and which strategies are appropriate. While there is general agreement on the need for conservation and the benefits it confers on …

Rural Population Change On The Canadian Prairies, William J. Carlyle Feb 1994

Rural Population Change On The Canadian Prairies, William J. Carlyle

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Rapid change is a hallmark of rural settlement on the Canadian Prairies. All the stages from the initial trickle of pioneers through the closer settlement of established farms to widespread and severe depopulation have been telescoped into a mere one to five generations. This paper focuses upon the geographical patterns of rural population change within the region during the twentieth century. Fundamental to this purpose are township population maps. Several main sub-regions of population change are identified. The grassland zones were settled relatively late, the rural population peaked early at moderate to low densities, and decline to sparse populations was …

The Effects Of Migration Upon The Quality Of Life Of Elderly Movers In A Small Prairie City: The Case Of Brandon, Manitoba, John Everitt, Barbara Gfellner Feb 1994

The Effects Of Migration Upon The Quality Of Life Of Elderly Movers In A Small Prairie City: The Case Of Brandon, Manitoba, John Everitt, Barbara Gfellner

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Mobility decisions and the effects of migration upon the quality of life of elderly people who had recently relocated to or within Brandon are assessed and compared with the responses ofa non-mover "control group." Although confirming many established results concerning the migration of the elderly, other conclusions also emerged. For instance, migrants and non-movers have a number of different social demographic characteristics, and their needs and desires appear to be quite dissimilar. Although non-movers appear apprehensive about the future, many movers see positive outcomes, in terms of life satisfaction, resulting from their migration. The research also raises the question of …

Review Of The Proper Edge Of The Sky: The High Plateau Country Of Utah By Edward A. Geary, John A. Butler Feb 1994

Review Of The Proper Edge Of The Sky: The High Plateau Country Of Utah By Edward A. Geary, John A. Butler

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Near the end of his introduction, Edward A. Geary states that "the pages that follow are neither guidebook, nor travel narrative, nor natural history, nor social history, nor literary history, nor personal essay, though they incorporate elements from all these genres" (p. 3). While the work does challenge classification, it presents a massive accumulation of details that vividly portrays the interaction between an extraordinary landscape and a remarkable people. Geary accomplishes this through twelve intriguing chapters.

A Review Of White-Tailed Deer Movements In The Great Plains Relative To Environmental Conditions, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Scott E. Hygnstrom Feb 1994

A Review Of White-Tailed Deer Movements In The Great Plains Relative To Environmental Conditions, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Scott E. Hygnstrom

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Movements of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus Rafinesque) in the eastern Great Plains and Midwest were examined. The proportion of deer that move between distinct summer and winter home ranges varies among different populations. Seasonal migration between home ranges is influenced primarily by phenological period, agricultural activities, and the availability of cover and food. Corn provides a nearly unlimited source of cover and food in summer and early fall. In late fall and early winter, deer move to areas of permanent cover, such as wooded river bottoms, draws, or slopes. Hunting, crop harvest, or seasonal change may influence deer movements …

Sensitivity Of Streamflow To Climate Change: A Case Study For Nebraska, Clinton M. Rowe, Karl C. Kuivinen, Francisco Flores-Mendeza Feb 1994

Sensitivity Of Streamflow To Climate Change: A Case Study For Nebraska, Clinton M. Rowe, Karl C. Kuivinen, Francisco Flores-Mendeza

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Climate change, whether natural or due to human action, will have an impact on many aspects of our environment. The nature of streamflow changes will depend on the magnitude and direction of the climate change. However, since the principal climatic factors that control streamflow are precipitation and evapotranspiration (which can be estimated from air temperature data), the sensitivity ofstreamflow to variations in climate can be studied through the use of plausible scenarios of climate change.

A simple water budget model was used to reconstruct streamflow from monthly temperature and precipitation data for locations within and immediately surrounding the Little Blue …

Quantifying The Effect Of Technology And Management On Wheat Yields In The Western Great Plains, Elizabeth Law-Evans, Paul A. Kay Feb 1994

Quantifying The Effect Of Technology And Management On Wheat Yields In The Western Great Plains, Elizabeth Law-Evans, Paul A. Kay

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The relative influences of interannual climate variability, technological development, and management strategies on crop yields are difficult to separate. Assessment of climate impacts and of an agricultural system s ability to protect crops from weather-related yield changes are important questions receiving considerable attention in view of the potential for climate change. Statistical and ecological crop-climate studies have assumed that the combined effects of technology and management have produced linear or exponential yield increases in most crops in recent years.

In this study, an empirical assessment of influences of management and technology on wheat yields in north-central Colorado was made using …

Review Of Symposium On The Impacts Of Climatic Change And Variability On The Great Plains By Geoffrey Wall, Paul A. Kay Feb 1994

Review Of Symposium On The Impacts Of Climatic Change And Variability On The Great Plains By Geoffrey Wall, Paul A. Kay

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This book collects the papers from a 1990 symposium in Calgary that brought American and Canadian experts together to share knowledge and insights on the regional implications of global change. The symposium was sponsored by government agencies on both sides of the border, attesting to the recognition of the importance of the issues and implications. The volume opens with nine overview papers on climatic change, climate models, scenarios of international and Plains agriculture under climatic change, socioeconomic adaptability, and response strategies. The following six topical sections each contain five or six brief papers (most with short bibliographies) by specialists. Introductory …
