Where One Size Does Not Fit All: Small Community Diversity, Kathleen Prochaska-Cue, Ann Ziebarth, Bonnie Shrewsbury Oct 1997

Where One Size Does Not Fit All: Small Community Diversity, Kathleen Prochaska-Cue, Ann Ziebarth, Bonnie Shrewsbury

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Using a community classification based on key demographic and geographic factors and data from the U.S. Census, analyses from 212 small communities indicate significant inter- and intra-state differences. The communities studied were located in two states within the North Central Region. The sample was limited to incorporated places with populations between 1,000 and 2,500. Several commonly-held ideas about small communities are either challenged or confirmed by this research. Similarities and differences among the communities as well as between the states support the conclusion that small communities have diverse characteristics. Not all small communities ofthis size are geographically isolated places with …

Review Of Of Bison And Man By Harold P. Danz, James R. Shortridge Oct 1997

Review Of Of Bison And Man By Harold P. Danz, James R. Shortridge

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Because plains bison have come to symbolize open spaces and freedom to Americans, as well as past ecological insensitivity, stories about them have widespread appeal. Harold Danz's contribution to this large and growing literature is an overview, a brief treatment of the animal's evolution, demise, and eventual recovery. Mr. Danz brings a varied background to his writing: long-time service with the National Park Service, a PhD, and the first executive directorship of the American Bison Association (ABA). This experience produces an unusual book, one that mixes detached analysis with enthusiastic promotion. The promotion sections, in my opinion, are the most …

No. 03: International Migration, Immigrant Entrepreneurs And South Africa’S Small Enterprise Economy, Christian M. Rogerson

Southern African Migration Programme

Since 1990 there has been a growing movement of foreign migrants and refugees to South Africa. The migrants have come primarily from South Africa’s traditional supply areas, including many Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries. An increasing number, however, are from elsewhere in Africa and further afield. South Africa’s new migration regime has generated considerable controversy within the country. The policy debate focuses on the implications of migration for the national labour market and for the development of new national immigration policy.

The best-documented form of migration by temporary workers is from surrounding African countries in such sectors as mining …

Mapping The Marias The Interface Of Native And Scientific Cartographies, Barbara Belyea Jul 1997

Mapping The Marias The Interface Of Native And Scientific Cartographies, Barbara Belyea

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In early June 1805, as they traveled up the Missouri toward the continental divide, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark came to a fork where two rivers of apparently comparable width and force flowed together. The captains paused at this junction, unable to decide which river was the "main stream" of the Missouri and which was the tributary. They were determined to fulfill Thomas Jefferson's instructions as exactly as possible: "to explore the Missouri river, & such principal stream of it, as, by it's course and communication with the waters of the Pacific ocean ... may offer the most direct & …

Review Of The Turn To The Native: Studies In Criticism And Culture By Arnold Krupat, Ward Churchill

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In the final essay of his most recent book, The Turn to the Native: Studies in Criticism and Culture, self-styled "ethnocritic" Arnold Krupat wonders aloud whether, through his interpretive activities, he hasn't become a "leftist colonizer" of the very sort critiqued so scathingly by Tunisian revolutionary theorist Albert Memmi more than three decades ago (p. 126). This worthy query, seemingly posed mainly as a rhetorical device allowing its author to absolve himself of the charge-he shortly concludes that simply by being "someone who reads and writes about Native American literature" he has made himself "useful without vanity" and is …

The Sacred Black Hills An Ethnohistorical Review, Linea Sundstrom Jul 1997

The Sacred Black Hills An Ethnohistorical Review, Linea Sundstrom

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The Black Hills area is widely recognized as sacred in the context of traditional Lakota and Cheyenne belief systems. Questions arise, however, regarding the authenticity and historical depth of these beliefs.1 Some researchers assert that the concept of the sacred Black Hills is little more than a twentieth century scheme to promote tourism or part of a legal strategy to gain the return of Black Hills lands to Lakota and Cheyenne tribal governments.2 While many Lakotas and Cheyennes today express a strong spiritual link to the Black Hills,3 some historians have questioned whether today's beliefs about the …

Farmsteads As Mirrors Of Cultural Adjustments And Change: The Ukrainian Canadian Experience, James W. Darlington May 1997

Farmsteads As Mirrors Of Cultural Adjustments And Change: The Ukrainian Canadian Experience, James W. Darlington

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Farmsteads reflect more than the nature and health of agricultural activity on individual farms and across geographic regions; they provide a reliable record of other aspects of cultural and economic adjustment and change. This paper considers the farmsteads constructed by the Ukrainian immigrants and their descendants who settled in one district of the Canadian prairies beginning in 1896. A field survey of four townships reveals that between the time of initial settlement and the present four distinct generations of farm structures were erected. These generations of buildings-labeled here pioneer, traditional, transitional, and modern provide clear evidence of the economic progress …

Review Of The Nebraska Sand Hills: The Human Landscape By Charles Barron Mcintosh, Philip J. Gersmehl May 1997

Review Of The Nebraska Sand Hills: The Human Landscape By Charles Barron Mcintosh, Philip J. Gersmehl

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This is a remarkable volume. The ninety-first of 107 figures is a good example of what makes this book so remarkable. Figure 91 has a baker's dozen (13) small hand-drawn sketches that show how different landowners went back to the land office and claimed an additional 480 acres (Kincaid additions) to expand their 160-acre homesteads into units that might be more viable in the semi-arid climate of central Nebraska. These 13 examples come from ten different counties, which sprawl over an area larger than three of the original 13 colonies (as illustrated in Figure 1, which goes the extra step …

Borderland Interaction In The International Region Of The Great Plains: An Historic-Geographical Perspective, Randy William Widdis May 1997

Borderland Interaction In The International Region Of The Great Plains: An Historic-Geographical Perspective, Randy William Widdis

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Canada as an historically contingent society, developing within the context of its own internal evolution, has always framed its becoming in its changing political, economic, and cultural relationships with the United States. The border takes on special significance for Canadians as it serves as the basic reference point for historical, literal, symbolic, and psychological interpretations of identity. Yet the meanings assigned to the border vary regionally because of different historic-geographical experiences.

This paper examines different types of population, economic, political, and cultural interactions taking place across the border within what can be called the international region of the Great Plains. …

Cross-Border Ties Among Protest Movements The Great Plains Connection, Mildred A. Schwartz Apr 1997

Cross-Border Ties Among Protest Movements The Great Plains Connection, Mildred A. Schwartz

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This paper examines the connections among political protest movements in twentieth century western Canada and the United States. Protest movements are social movements and related organizations, including political protest parties, with the objective of deliberately changing government programs and policies. Those changes may also entail altering the composition of the government or even its form. Social movements involve collective efforts to bring about change in ways that avoid or reject established belief systems or organizations. They begin with assessments of what is wrong and propose a blueprint for action to achieve new goals by drawing on committed supporters willing to …

Review Of The Perfection Of The Morning: An Apprenticeship In Nature By Sharon Butala, Lisa Knopp Apr 1997

Review Of The Perfection Of The Morning: An Apprenticeship In Nature By Sharon Butala, Lisa Knopp

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

"One would hardly have sufficient motive to write an autobiography had not some radical change occurred in his life-conversion, entry into a new life, the operation of Grace," writes theorist Jean Starobinski in his 1980 essay, "Style of Autobiography." The radical change that led to Sharon Butala's transformation occurred in 1976 when, at the age of thirty six, she left the "urban, academic, feminist world" she had known in Saskatoon to marry Peter Butala, a forty-one-year-old bachelor who lived and worked on his family's ranch in extreme southwestern Saskatchewan. Employing the language of conversion, Butala says that her "fateful decision …

Review Of Edmonton: The Life Of A City Edited By Bob Hesketh And Frances Swyripa, L. D. Mccann

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The essays in Edmonton: The Life of a City were first presented at a conference at the University of Alberta in May of 1995. They have been brought together here to celebrate the past in the bicentennial life of what the editors call (but do not fully investigate) a "great northern city." Offered up by both professional and amateur scholars alike, including -among others-historians and geographers, architects and archivists, literature specialists and political scientists, this diversified collection comprises over thirty well-written chapters. Taken as a whole, they offer a multidisciplinary interpretation of the evolving history of Alberta's largest populated city, …

Popular Music In A Transnational World: The Construction Of Local Identities In Singapore, Lily Kong Apr 1997

Popular Music In A Transnational World: The Construction Of Local Identities In Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

As an area of geographical inquiry, popular music has not been explored to any large extent. Where writings exist, they have been somewhat divorced from recent theoretical and methodological questions that have rejuvenated social and cultural geography. In this paper, I focus on one arena which geographers can develop in their analysis of popular music, namely, the exploration of local influences and global forces in the production of music. In so doing, I wish to explore how local resources intersect with global ones in a process of transculturation. Using the example of English songs by one particular songwriter and artiste …

Making Sense Of The Asian Success Story: An Integrative Framework, Chow Hou Wee, Gilbert Tan Mar 1997

Making Sense Of The Asian Success Story: An Integrative Framework, Chow Hou Wee, Gilbert Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The article focuses on Asian countries that have experienced economic growth over the past 50 years including Hong Kong, China; Japan; Singapore; South Korea and Taiwan. With the exception of Hong Kong, the economic success of the Asian countries has been attributed to the interventionist framework. Export-orientation is one strategy that is most associated with the success of the five Asian countries. The export-oriented strategy helped the five Asian countries in many ways. The ensuring growth of employment enabled the country to save and accumulate capital for reinvestment. The export-oriented strategy also positively affects the competitive advantages of the country. …

Public Housing In Singapore: Interpreting 'Quality' In The 1990s, Siew Eng Teo, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

While writings exist on various aspects of public housing in Singapore, recent developments in the 1990s have not yet been given any serious academic attention, Our intention in this paper is to focus on such developments, paying particular attention to the government's policy of providing quality housing, After setting the context of efforts at providing quality in the first three decades of public housing by the Housing and Development Board, we turn our attention specifically to the 1990s, focusing on three areas in which attempts are being made to improve quality, namely, the physical upgrading of older estates, the privatisation …

The Construction Of National Identity Through The Production Of Ritual And Spectacle: An Analysis Of National Day Parades In Singapore, Lily Kong, Brenda S. A. Yeoh Mar 1997

The Construction Of National Identity Through The Production Of Ritual And Spectacle: An Analysis Of National Day Parades In Singapore, Lily Kong, Brenda S. A. Yeoh

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper, we adopt the view that 'nation' and 'national identity' are social constructions, created to serve ideological ends. We discuss this in the specific empirical context of Singapore's National Day parades. By drawing on officially produced souvenir programmes and magazines, newspaper reports, and interviews with participants and spectators, we analyse the parades between 1965 and 1994, showing how, as an annual ritual and landscape spectacle, the parades succeed to a large extent in creating a sense of awe, wonderment and admiration. Discussion focuses on four aspects of the celebrations: the site of the parades, their display and theatricality, …

Review Of This Fragile Land: A Natural History Of The Nebraska Sandhills By Paul A. Johnsgard, Bob Ross Jan 1997

Review Of This Fragile Land: A Natural History Of The Nebraska Sandhills By Paul A. Johnsgard, Bob Ross

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This Fragile Land, though written for a popular audience, is not intended for children or for light bedtime reading. In language midway between academic discourse and good literary prose, Paul Johnsgard characterizes the plant and animal communities of the Sandhills thoroughly- and with humor and imagination.

Part One describes the "geology and historical geography" of the Sandhills region and its borders; it is the only part that might be tedious for some. In his preface, Johnsgard advises readers to begin with Part Two and skip-and-sample backward. In five chapters, he details the geographic relationships of species' habitats to one …

Culture And Capital In Urban Change: The Constitutive Relationship Between Development Imperatives And Symbolic Values In Singapore's Built Environment, Lily Kong Jan 1997

Culture And Capital In Urban Change: The Constitutive Relationship Between Development Imperatives And Symbolic Values In Singapore's Built Environment, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Over the last three decades, Singapore has undergone tremendous urban change. These changes have been premised on the logic and rationality of economic planning, in which development goals have taken precedence over other symbolic values, be they historic, cultural, sacred, personal, social or aesthetic. In recent years, however, there has been tangible evidence that parts of the urban fabric are being retained, a reflection perhaps of increasing appreciation of the cultural and historical values of these built forms. Given this scenario, my intention in this paper is to explore the interconnections between symbolic values in the urban landscape, on the …
