Review Of Men Of The Steel Rails: Workers On The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, 1869- 1900 By James H. Ducker, Robert H. Zieger Jul 1984

Review Of Men Of The Steel Rails: Workers On The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, 1869- 1900 By James H. Ducker, Robert H. Zieger

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Using an impressive array of company and union publications, newspapers, directories, and archival materials, James H. Ducker delineates the lives and experiences of the Santa Fe Railroad's labor force. Although he includes three chapters relating to unionism, strike action, and working-class politics, his main focus is on the more private side of his subjects' stories. Even in his chapter on the railroad unions, the author is as interested in the fraternal and social functions they served as in their collective bargaining character.

Ducker carefully places each of his topics in an appropriate historiographical context. When dealing with the strikes of …

Review Of Rodeo: An Anthropologist Looks At The Wild And The Tame By Elizabeth Atwood Lawrence, John W. Bennett Jul 1984

Review Of Rodeo: An Anthropologist Looks At The Wild And The Tame By Elizabeth Atwood Lawrence, John W. Bennett

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Anthropologists have been slow to take up intensive fieldwork in American life, partly because their professional training has emphasized that "the exotic" is something found only in remote tribal societies, not in urbanized North America. But with the transformation of tribal cultures into developing nations, anthropologists have begun to turn to their own culture and have found it possible to see it as exotic. This book is an example of that new genre. The author has unusual equipment for the task: she was trained as a veterinarian and also as an anthropologist, and her study of rodeo grew out of …

Review Of Plains Indian Studies: A Collection Of Essays In Honor Of John C. Ewers And Waldo R. Wedel Edited By Douglas H. Ubelaker And Herman J. Viola, Warren W. Caldwell Jul 1984

Review Of Plains Indian Studies: A Collection Of Essays In Honor Of John C. Ewers And Waldo R. Wedel Edited By Douglas H. Ubelaker And Herman J. Viola, Warren W. Caldwell

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

A dual Festschrift is unusual, but here we have one celebrating a collective century of achievement by John Ewers and Waldo Wedel, two scholars of the first rank. Ewers and Wedel, long-time colleagues at the Smithsonian Institution, are well known to historians and anthropologists with special interests in the plains of North America. Indeed, each has contributed to the basic structure of their respective disciplines: Ewers essentially to ethnology and Wedel to archeology. Neither scholar worked within a strictly academic setting and thus, neither had students in the usual sense, yet Ewers and Wedel have been remarkably influential and are …

Indian Maps Their Place In The History Of Plains Cartography, G. Malcolm Lewis Apr 1984

Indian Maps Their Place In The History Of Plains Cartography, G. Malcolm Lewis

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

References to the maps and mapping activities of North American Indians have appeared in scholarly writings for approximately two hundred years and in contemporary accounts of discovery and exploration for more than four hundred years. The topic has received relatively little attention, however, from modern scholars. In view of the recent expansion of Indian studies in both Canada and the United States, this lack may at first seem surprising. In part it reflects the fact that there are relatively few extant examples of Indian maps because Indians and most whites have tended to treat them as ephemera, not for the …

Mapping The Missouri River Through The Great Plains, 1673-1895, W. Raymond Wood Jan 1984

Mapping The Missouri River Through The Great Plains, 1673-1895, W. Raymond Wood

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

For decades, "the Way West" referred not to any kind of overland trail but to the channel of the Missouri River. St. Louis became famous as the gateway to the West because it was the port of entry to the vast western domains drained in part by this mighty stream. Considering the extensive scholarship devoted to such land routes as the Oregon, Santa Fe, and Overland trails, it is curious that the equally important role of the Missouri River as an artery of exploration has been neglected. Only three works have made any real attempt to offer such a history, …

Review Of Yuwipi: Vision And Experience In Oglala Ritual By William K. Powers, Raymond J. De Mallie Oct 1983

Review Of Yuwipi: Vision And Experience In Oglala Ritual By William K. Powers, Raymond J. De Mallie

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This volume provides an introduction to contemporary Lakota religious life among the Oglalas of Pine Ridge Reservation. It focuses on three basic rituals that form the core of traditional religion as individuals face the problems and challenges of day-to-day life: the sweat lodge, vision quest, and yuwipi meeting. Although written from an anthropological viewpoint, with an anthropologist's concern for ritual detail, this is a literary treatment, more descriptive than analytical. It paints a vivid picture of these contemporary rituals, recreating in novelistic detail an actual family crisis that prompted a young Oglala man to carry his concerns to a medicine …

Review Of Indian-White Relations In The United States: A Bibliography Of Works Published 1975- 1980 By Francis Paul Prucha, Roy W. Meyer

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

One of the shortcomings of any bibliography is that it is somewhat out-of-date by the time it is published. The more being written in its area of coverage, the sooner it needs to be updated. It is an indication of the current interest in Indian white relations that Francis Paul Prucha's compendious bibliographical guide published in 1977 has already had to be supplemented with a bibliography containing more than three thousand entries. In the single area of legal relations, for example, nearly three hundred fifty new titles have appeared in the years 1975-1980.

Users of Prucha's original guide will find …

Review Of Arapahoe Politics, 1851-1978: Symbols In Crisis Of Authority By Loretta Fowler, William K. Powers Oct 1983

Review Of Arapahoe Politics, 1851-1978: Symbols In Crisis Of Authority By Loretta Fowler, William K. Powers

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The thesis of this book is that the Arapahoe, who share the Wind River reservation of Wyoming with the Shoshoni, have somehow adapted better than other tribes to white domination through the creation and use of effective political symbols, particularly those values associated with traditional age grades, a distinctive feature of early Arapahoe society. Fred Eggan, in the Introduction, states that it is clear from the author's account "that the Arapahoe have made the most successful adjustment to white culture of any Plains tribe" (xv, italics added). It is a wonder why this intolerable statement was included. For many …

General Karl N. Haushofer And Geopolitik, David P. Benorden Jul 1983

General Karl N. Haushofer And Geopolitik, David P. Benorden

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this research is to trace the mainstream of German and related geopolitical philosophy and the various aspects that influenced the philosophy from 1800 to 1945. Two themes evolved: Political Geography and Nationalism. Along with economic considerations, these themes were fused into Geopolitik by Karl Haushofer and his followers in Germany following the end of World War I.

The goal of this work is to trace Geopolitik to discover the significance of its implications, what was behind it, and what were its real objectives. Geopolitik is a German-developed "science'' based on doctrines and practices with its origins in …

The Minnesota Studies In International Development Program At The University Of Minnesota, Thomas O'Toole

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The Minnesota Studies in International Development Program is a new program to engage University of Minnesota students and faculty in systematic, long term cooperative research with community outreach to individuals in Third World countries who are involved in development work. The program: I) involves Americans and people in Third World countries directly in a common task so that they may learn from one another, 2) brings the tools of science (both Western and non-Western) to bear on the development of less developed nations, 3) helps internationalize the curriculum of the University, and 4) helps replenish the dwindling stock of professionally …

Review Of Ceremonies Of The Pawnee. Part I, The Skiri. Part Ii, The South Bands By James R. Murie, Paul A. Olson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

After sixty years the Smithsonian Institution has finally published James R. Murie's work on Pawnee ceremonies in a handsome set of two volumes, impeccably edited by Douglas R. Parks. Murie, part Pawnee and somewhat trained in the techniques of anthropological investigation, began serious study of his own tribe in the 1890s and completed it in 1921 shortly before his death. Through much of his career he worked with white anthropologists such as Alice Fletcher, George Grinnell, Owen Dorsey, and Clark Wissler, some of whom gave him scant credit for his assistance in their research and publications. These volumes were begun …

Review Of The Plains Cree: An Ethnographic, Historical, And Comparative Study By David G. Mandelbaum, Warren C. Caldwell

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The Canadian Plains Research Center has provj.ded a new and amended version of the Plains Cree, a classic of plains anthropology first published more than forty years ago. The earlier volume, available under the imprint of the American Museum of Natural History (Anthropological Papers 37, Part II, 1940), is a portion of a much more extensive work completed by Mandelbaum as a Ph.D. dissertation at Yale University during 1936. The complete document is published here for the first time.

The earlier version is essentially a description of the "buffalo-hunting way of life ... of the Plains Cree" (xiii). It …

Review Of The Ranchers: A Book Of Generations By Stan Steiner, Roger L. Welsch Jul 1982

Review Of The Ranchers: A Book Of Generations By Stan Steiner, Roger L. Welsch

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

There is a story in the Wyoming WP A files (for which I thank James Dow of Iowa State University) about some cowboys who collapsed in various sections of a country cemetery after a full-blown drunk. One of the celebrants had fallen into a two-foot depression of a collapsed grave and there slept off his condition. He woke up at the crack of dawn, sat up in the grave, surveyed his situation, and shouted, "Hurray! It's Halleluja Morning and I'm the first one here!"

In The Ranchers Steiner presents us with a long, fragmented, maudlin obituary for a culture just …
