Review Of Native American Art: The Collections Of The Ethnological Museum Berlin By Peter Bolz And Hans-Ulrich Sanner, Bruce Bernstein Oct 2001

Review Of Native American Art: The Collections Of The Ethnological Museum Berlin By Peter Bolz And Hans-Ulrich Sanner, Bruce Bernstein

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Written to accompany an exhibition of the same name at the Ethnologisches Museum Berlin (once known as the Museum fur Völkerkunde), Native American Art provides a broad sense of the exhibition and the museum's holdings. Its authors' stated intention is to answer the frequently asked question: "How have all the Indian things in the museum gotten there!" The catalog does so in a manner that illuminates and extends our understanding of the Berlin Museum, anthropology museums in general, and American Indian cultures.

The catalog's first chapter, "Indians and Germans: A Relationship Riddled With Clichés," discusses some of the stereotypes …

Review Of The Five Crows Ledger: Biographic Warrior Art Of The Flathead Indians By James D. Keyser, Candace Greene Oct 2001

Review Of The Five Crows Ledger: Biographic Warrior Art Of The Flathead Indians By James D. Keyser, Candace Greene

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Publication of the Five Crows Ledger brings to light a new source of information for examining the complex and shifting boundaries of Plains Indian culture in the nineteenth century. This set of thirteen drawings clearly demonstrates that the Flathead, usually categorized as a Plateau people, participated heavily in the Plains war practice of counting coup and validating their personal exploits with lasting visual records.

These drawings, now in the collection of the Jesuit Missouri Province Archives in St. Louis, were collected by Fr. Pierre-Jean De Smet in western Montana in the early 1840s. De Smet's annotations provide a rich body …

Review Of Repatriation Reader: Who Owns American Indian Remains? Edited By Devon A. Mihesuah, Julia D. Harrison Oct 2001

Review Of Repatriation Reader: Who Owns American Indian Remains? Edited By Devon A. Mihesuah, Julia D. Harrison

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In writing a review for Great Plains Quarterly one is asked to emphasize the book's Great Plains content. So while Devon Mihesuah's edited reader does not specifically mention particular Native peoples who lived on the Plains any more than it discusses others who lived outside the region, it is of direct relevance to anyone interested in the Great Plains, particularly anyone interested in the region's Native history and the contemporary lived reality of these populations. Issues of repatriation, reburial, looting, the effectiveness of the NAGPRA legislation, relationships among Native people, museums, archaeologists, and anthropologists are currently central to any such …

Review Of Another America: Native American Maps And The History Of Our Land By Mark Warhus, W. Raymond Wood Oct 2001

Review Of Another America: Native American Maps And The History Of Our Land By Mark Warhus, W. Raymond Wood

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This is the first book outlining the nature of Native American cartography and synthesizing that information with Native American history and world views. The geographical knowledge brought together in one individual Native American's mind and expressed in graphic form is not often appreciated, even by serious scholars. Warhus reminds us that a single map, prepared by the Blackfoot Indian chief Ak ko mok ki, provides a detailed picture of more than 200,000 square miles of western North America, and the map by the Arapaho Gero-Schunu-wy-ha the entirety of the Central and Northern Plains. These examples could be multiplied many times, …

Review Of Women In Ancient America By Karen Olsen Bruhns And Karen E. Stothert, Marcel Kornfeld Oct 2001

Review Of Women In Ancient America By Karen Olsen Bruhns And Karen E. Stothert, Marcel Kornfeld

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

It is well known that the role and contribution of women to prehistory has long been ignored or undervalued. Because women represent approximately one half of humanity, have done so in the past, and make a contribution by sheer numbers alone, this book is a necessary attempt to remedy the shortcomings in the writing of American prehistory as it pertains to women and gender. The authors state in its preface that their book is "an introduction to the study of women in the American past."

The first chapter lays out the method for the study of women and gender in …

Looking At African Value System Through Cultural Dimensions: How Do African Countries Culturally Differ Among Themselves And From The United States?, Habte G. Woldu Aug 2001

Looking At African Value System Through Cultural Dimensions: How Do African Countries Culturally Differ Among Themselves And From The United States?, Habte G. Woldu

International Conference on African Development Archives

The study through a variety of cultural dimensions, measures the cultural differences and similarities of four different African countries: Cameroon, Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Africa. The national cultures of the four African countries are analyzed through a methodology for systematically assessing cultural differences. The African countries are compared with that of the United States of America. The output of the study clearly shows that there are cultural differences among the African countries as well as between the African countries and the United States. African respondents demonstrated significantly higher cultural traits in collective & hieratical relations, being/feeling & risk avoidance related …

The Elite And The Quest For Peace, Democracy And Development In Ethiopian: Lessons To Be Learnt, Merera Gudina Aug 2001

The Elite And The Quest For Peace, Democracy And Development In Ethiopian: Lessons To Be Learnt, Merera Gudina

International Conference on African Development Archives

The present experiment involves the objective of accomplishing two historical tasks: the tasks of creating a country that houses 'nations, nationalities and peoples' of equals and ending an authoritarian rule by democratizing the Ethiopian state and society as a whole, a precondition for peace and development. However, as the result of the accumulated five grand failures of the Ethiopian elite in a century, the prennial quest for peace, democracy and development continue to be as illusive as ever. The most fundamental question is, therefore, what lessons to be learnt to move forward? This paper, which sums up the political history …

Carbon And Nitrogen Isotopes In Archeological Bison Remains As Indicators Of Paleoenvironmental Change In Southern Alberta, Jeremy J. Leyden, Gerald Oetelaar Apr 2001

Carbon And Nitrogen Isotopes In Archeological Bison Remains As Indicators Of Paleoenvironmental Change In Southern Alberta, Jeremy J. Leyden, Gerald Oetelaar

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Between 1995 and 1997, archeological excavations in northwest Calgary, Alberta, uncovered cultural materials from several occupations dating back 8,500 years. Samples of bison bone recovered at the sites were chemically prepared and analyzed for isotopic ratios. Using the resultant carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios, we reconstructed the diet of bison from four different cultural occupations spanning the last 8,500 years. Based on current and established models of bison subsistence behavior, this dietary information was used to infer large-scale environmental changes during this time interval in our study area. The inferred changes in vegetation and climate were compared with paleoenvironmental reconstructions …

Review Of Indian Reservations In The United States: Territory, Sovereignty, And Socioeconomic Change By Klaus Frantz, James Riding In

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This book addresses complicated social, economic, and political factors that have shaped the development of American Indian reservations. Authored by an Austrian geographer, it is a revised translation of the second edition in German. Its interdisciplinary approach is relevant to geography, history, American Indian studies, sociology, economics, anthropology, and political science.

Review Of Theorizing The Americanist Tradition Edited By Lisa Philips Valentine And Regna Darnell, Thomas C. Patterson Apr 2001

Review Of Theorizing The Americanist Tradition Edited By Lisa Philips Valentine And Regna Darnell, Thomas C. Patterson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The twenty-five essays in this volume enhance our understanding and appreciation of the Americanist tradition of anthropological theory and practice. The Americanist tradition, as several authors point out, has been concerned historically with Native-language texts and the knowledge they encode about the culture of Native communities and the individuals who compose them. The Americanists' concern with texts was manifested in the efforts of Albert Gatschet, George Dorsey, James Dorsey, Franz Boas, Edward Sapir, and others in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to document and preserve the oral knowledge of cultures that were being rapidly transformed or erased altogether. …

Carbon Stable Isotope Analysis Of Bison Dentition, R. Mark Larson, Lawrence C. Todd, Eugene F. Kelly, Jeffrey M. Welker Apr 2001

Carbon Stable Isotope Analysis Of Bison Dentition, R. Mark Larson, Lawrence C. Todd, Eugene F. Kelly, Jeffrey M. Welker

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Understanding how bison behaved in the past can provide key insights for today's managers, ecologists, and anthropologists. However, the direct application of both historic documentation and modern field observations may not provide the necessary insights for understanding bison behaviors in archeological and paleontological contexts. In order to develop a better understanding of possible behavior within these contexts, we have developed individual foraging histories for 22 Bison bison from the Glenrock Buffalo Jump assemblage of the Plains Late Prehistoric period in Wyoming and four Pleistocene B. priscus from the Ukraine. Incremental stable carbon isotopic values of dental enamel were used to …

Review Of The Encyclopedia Of Native American Economic History Edited By Bruce E. Johansen, John Moore Apr 2001

Review Of The Encyclopedia Of Native American Economic History Edited By Bruce E. Johansen, John Moore

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The publication of this reference work is well-timed to encourage a burgeoning new field of scholarship that cuts across the traditional disciplines of history, anthropology, economics, and political science. Since John Stuart Mill and Karl Marx, economic history and political economy have occupied at least small sectors of these disciplines, but the field has been expanding in recent years thanks to the efforts of scholars who feel constrained by traditional disciplinary boundaries, scholars whose work is chronicled here.

Review Of Theorizing The Bringing Back The Past: Historical Perspectives On Canadian Archaeology Edited By Pamela Jane Smith And Donald Mitchell, Raymond Le Blanc

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Bringing Back the Past consists of a collection of papers about the development of archaeology in Canada, most of them based on presentations delivered in sessions at three annual meetings of the Canadian Archaeological Association beginning in 1994. The first of these was organized by Pamela Smith and the late William E. Taylor Jr.; Donald Mitchell collaborated with Smith after Taylor's untimely death in 1994.

Living Legitimacy: A New Approach To Good Government In Africa, Ajume H. Wingo Mar 2001

Living Legitimacy: A New Approach To Good Government In Africa, Ajume H. Wingo

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article argues for the reorientation of African governments from a model that privileges the central or garrison states to one rooted in the living experiences of citizens, such as their economic conditions, fellowship associations, local governments, and community self-reliance. It begins by describing and analyzing in depth an example of a set of moral, political, and social institutions that still work well to make collective decisions that the members of the community consider legitimate and follow without coercion. It demonstrates that a legitimate government is not and should not be a matter of instituting finished, polished, or ready-made solutions …

International Bulletin of Political Psychology

This article was written by Dr. Evelin Gerda Lindner, a cross-cultural social psychologist and physician at the University of Oslo, Institute of Psychology. Its focus on psychological research on humiliation is very relevant to political psychology given that this construct of emotion often may be salient in motivating insurgency movements, terrorism, war, low-intensity conflict, human rights violations, the breakdown of peacekeeping and peacemaking operations, and the incidence and prevalence of crime. China And The Globalization Of Ir Theory: Discussion Of 'Building International Relations Theory With Chinese Characteristics', William A. Callahan Feb 2001

China And The Globalization Of Ir Theory: Discussion Of 'Building International Relations Theory With Chinese Characteristics', William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This essay examines current developments in International Relations theory in China. First it comments on Song Xinning's essay, agreeing that IR theory in China is limited by ideology, the dominance of policy-oriented research, and the state. But rather than seeing culture ('IR theory with Chinese characteristics') as a problem that can be solved by a more scientific approach to IR theory, the essay argues that the scientism of realism and IPE has similar problems. Thus the essay switches from the universals of science to the contingency of interpretation to understand global politics, drawing on recent books which combine IPE with …

This volume represents revised versions of a collection of papers presented at Cairo Papers Ninth Annual Symposium on ''The New Arab Family,'' held in May 2000. Marriage, divorce, and related topics were center stage, particularly in the demographic papers. Another focus was to combine two very different approaches to the study of the family -- on the one hand demographic, and on the other broadly sociological or anthropological, or as some would say, psychodynamic, that is to say focusing on dyadic or multi-member networks of relationships within the family. Some of these papers in turn focused on ''agency,'' the ways …
