Surviving English, Connie Schomburg
Surviving English, Connie Schomburg
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Noncredit English as a Second Language (ESL) classes often serve as a starting place for new immigrants aged eighteen or older who want to learn "survival English." The students attending these classes are widely diverse in terms of motivations, educational and cultural backgrounds, English-language fluency, life experiences, and learning styles. Classes are designed to equip these adult learners with basic English-language abilities in the context of the situations they are likely to encounter daily at work and in the community. This personal essay explores the challenges faced and the strengths revealed by students in these classes as witnessed by an …
Review Of Slaughterhouse Blues: The Meat And Poultry Industry In North America By Donald D. Stull And Michael J. Broadway, Kendall Thu
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Stull and Broadway capture fifteen years' experience examining structural shifts and community consequences of an increasingly industrialized meat production system in North America, with particular attention to the meatpacking sector. Their impressive, wide-ranging coverage of changing beef, poultry, and pork production systems and their influence on rural cultures will no doubt be a staple resource for scholars, policy makers, and communities in the Great Plains and elsewhere grappling with dramatic changes in our nation's food system.
An initial chapter aptly outlines the contours of agricultural industrialization, followed by a chapter each devoted specifically to the three major meat sectors. The …
Review Of Preserving The Sacred: Historical Perspectives On Ojibwa Midewiwin By Michael Angel, Katherine Pettipas
Review Of Preserving The Sacred: Historical Perspectives On Ojibwa Midewiwin By Michael Angel, Katherine Pettipas
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
This volume is a critical historiography of the nature and meaning of the Midewiwin as it was, and still is, practiced by southwestern, western, and northern Anishinaabeg (Ojibwa or Chippewa) in both Canada and the United States. A self-described "culturally sensitive outsider," Angel has approached his subject from an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing heavily from religious studies and historic and ethnographic documentation. The origins and functions of the Midewiwin are examined within the contexts of Anishinaabeg religion and society. Angel takes issue with the classification of the Midewiwin as a "revitalization movement" or a "crisis cult" by demonstrating that the "essential …
Review Of Uniting Mountain And Plain: Cities, Law, And Environmental Change Along The Front Range By Kathleen A. Brosnan, Richard Hogan
Review Of Uniting Mountain And Plain: Cities, Law, And Environmental Change Along The Front Range By Kathleen A. Brosnan, Richard Hogan
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Brosnan offers a remarkably well-researched and well-written analysis of the Colorado Front Range urban ecology, focusing on Denver (the financial and commercial capital), Colorado Springs (the tourist town), and Pueblo (the factory town). Denver's business leaders receive the bulk of the attention here, but their efforts to promote a diverse regional industrial hinterland lead the reader through the mining, farming, and grazing regions of nineteenth-century Colorado. The narrative does not follow localities so much as problems and possibilities, beginning with the problem of extinguishing Native American claims (chapter 2) and establishing irrigated agriculture (chapter 3). The histories of Colorado Springs …

Advice From St. Maximos Confessor For Contemporary Macedonians, James R. Payton Jr.
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
All three of our monotheistic religions rely on the divine Word, written for us: for Jews in the Tanakh, for Christians also in the New Testament, and for Muslims as well in the Qur’an. For all our disagreements with each other, we recognize a common rootedness in a tradition of faith finding its beginning in Abraham, for Jews carried forward by the patriarchs and Moses, for Christians fulfilled in Jesus Christ, and for Muslims culminating in Muhammed. Consequently, even in the midst of the tensions that have separated our faiths over the centuries and have contributed recently to the tensions …

An Interim Report Of A Viking-Age & Medieval Archaeofauna From Undir Junkarinsfløtti, Sandoy, Faroe Islands, Thomas H. Mcgovern, Colin Amundsen, Sophia Perdikaris, Ramona Harrison, Yekaterina Krivogorskaya
School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications
Cooperative international excavations at the site of Undir Junkarinsfløtti (27020) in the village of Sandur on the island of Sandoy, Faroe Islands in May 2003 recovered a stratified bone - rich midden deposit extending from the Viking Age to the early medieval period. The animal bone collection contains domestic mammals (cattle, sheep, dog, goat, and pig) and substantial amounts of fish (mainly cod), birds (mainly puffin and guillemot), and shellfish (mainly limpet). While the current collection has the archaeological limitations inherent in column samples, it suggests persistence of substantial pig keeping into the 13th c, and strongly indicates a sustainable …

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications
This is a report of analysis of 15th c bone materials from the site of Akurvík in NW Iceland excavated in 1990. A small international project in Árneshreppur district recovered a series of stratified midden deposits associated with small turf structures on an eroding beachfront. Radiocarbon dates identify at least two major phases of occupation and use, one extending into the mid 13th century, and the other dating to the mid 15th century. This report documents the animal bone collection from the later 15th c occupation. Dominated by cod fish, these deposits appear to be the product of seasonal fishery …

Review Of Coacoochee's Bones: A Seminole Saga By Susan A. Miller, Alcione M. Amos
Review Of Coacoochee's Bones: A Seminole Saga By Susan A. Miller, Alcione M. Amos
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In Coacoochee' s Bones Susan Miller tells the outstanding story of an outstanding leader in an outstanding manner. The repeated use of "outstanding" is necessary because Miller has produced a unique work on the history of the Seminole people, not just Coacoochee. The narrative is written from the point of view of a Seminole, with insights an outsider wouldn't have. Furthermore, she makes judicious use of primary historical Seminole, Mexican, and US sources and of published material, enhanced with knowledge garnered from anthropological studies. The result is a highly informative and readable book.
Miller does not shrink from taking stands …
Review Of Real Indians: Identity And The Survival Of Native America By Eva Marie Garroutte, Terry P. Wilson
Review Of Real Indians: Identity And The Survival Of Native America By Eva Marie Garroutte, Terry P. Wilson
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Cherokee sociologist Eva Garroutte has fashioned a genuine contribution to the study of the American Indian in the United States. Herself a mixed-race person of Caucasian and Indian heritage, she focuses on the always troublesome and often controversial issue of Indian identity, one that pervades the consciousness of all Native Americans, and not a few non-Native folks. Her straightforward narrative is informed by published and unpublished sources in law, history, social science, and literature and enhanced by numerous in-depth interviews with Indian and non-Indian people. What results constitutes the single comprehensive book-length examination of "Indian-ness" in print.

Review Of Invisible Natives: Myth And Identity In The American Western By Armando Jose Prats, Peter N. Peregrine
Review Of Invisible Natives: Myth And Identity In The American Western By Armando Jose Prats, Peter N. Peregrine
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The relationship between the Great Plains and the Hollywood Western has always been a strange one. The "classic" era of the Hollywood Western, the period between roughly 1864 and 1887, is also the "classic" era of the Great Plains-the era of the pioneer, the gunslinger, the cattleman, and, of course, the Indian fighter. Oddly, the Great Plains are rarely featured prominently in Hollywood Westerns; rather, it is the desert Southwest that is most often depicted. The flowing grasslands and wooded river valleys upon which the events of the "classic" era of the Western unfolded are often shown as rocky wastelands. …

Review Of The Columbia Guide To American Indians Of The Great Plains By Loretta Fowler, F. Todd Smith
Review Of The Columbia Guide To American Indians Of The Great Plains By Loretta Fowler, F. Todd Smith
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Loretta Fowler, professor of anthropology at the University of Oklahoma and author of several books on Great Plains tribes such as the Arapahos and the Gros Ventres, has now produced this excellent guide to all of the Indian tribes of the area. Dividing the Great Plains into five different regions-Southern, Central, Northwestern, Middle Missouri, and Northeastern Periphery-Fowler provides a concise and straightforward Indian history from prehistoric times to the present in four short chapters. Important terms-people, places, and events-used in each chapter are placed in boldface type and then defined in an appendix that stretches alphabetically from "age-graded societies" to …

Review Of Prairie Peddlers: The Syrian-Lebanese In North Dakota By William C. Sherman, Paul Whitney, And John Guerrero, Philip M. Kayal
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This remarkable ethnographic study of the Syrian-Lebanese in North Dakota is unique. The data and information are original, never mind that the voices heard are nearly those of the early settlers, certainly those of their children. The authors use the records of the late 1930s (early 1940s) Federal Writers Projects and the Works Progress Administration to understand the reasons for Arab migration to North Dakota and the Great Plains, their employment practices, life styles (marriage patterns, culinary habits), and religious traditions, their distribution, settlements, institutions (or lack thereof), and finally their near total assimilation.
If it were homesteading that attracted …

Review Of Native Voices: American Indian Identity And Resistance Edited By Richard A. Grounds, George E. Tinker, And David E. Wilkins, Beth R. Ritter
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
From our current vantage point, the true legacy of Vine Deloria Jr.'s scholarship and activism can neither be fully measured nor overstated. We know with certainty, however, that the landscape of Native American scholarship has been permanently altered-for the best. Native Voices honors Deloria's contributions through the presentation of original Native scholarship inspired by his model. As its editors observe, "Deloria has influenced a whole generation of younger Indian scholars to be self-consciously indigenous thinkers-to reclaim an American Indian intellectual tradition, along with a political activism rooted in the oral traditions of our peoples and the wisdom of our elders …

National Insecurities: Humiliation, Salvation And Chinese Nationalism, William A. Callahan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
While I was researching the South China Sea disputes between China, Vietnam, and the Philippines, I came upon an unlikely refer ence. In an otherwise hard-nosed analysis of the issue, a noted Chi nese expert cited a book called the Atlas of Shame. This odd juxta position of security studies, territoriality, and emotion piqued my interest, and I asked a friend in Beijing to track down this curious book. Once I got a copy of the Atlas of the Century of National Humili ation in Modern China, the correct title, I was fascinated by what seemed to be a unique …

Introduction
This paper reports on analysis of animal bones collect in 2000 by the Faroese Museum from a stratified but eroding beach front cliff in on the island of Sandoy. The site designation is Sondum, 27012 and the bone materials have been kindly sent to the CUNY laboratories for analysis by the excavator Simun Arge. While conditions of bone preservation are not as good as at the Undir Junkarinsfløtti locality to the SW across the embayment, and sample size is much smaller, a substantial amount of bone was recovered from datable which adds to our understanding of early economic patterns …

Book Review: One Hundred Years Of Old Man Sage: An Arapaho Life, Daniel J. Gelo
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Although biographies have long been a staple in Plains Indian ethnology, this profile of an Arapaho man of renown offers something new, different, and important. Because of their unique position in the unfolding events of frontier expansion, well described in this volume, the Arapahos never received the degree of study afforded other Plains tribes, and this book is redress. Moreover, Anderson's method of reconstructing Sage's life story is particularly inventive.

Book Review: Barns Of Kansas: A Pictorial History, John Michael Vlach
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This catalog of old barns from Kansas appears at a propitious moment when considerable popular attention is being directed toward historic farm buildings in the "Sunflower State." The National Park Service along with the Kansas State Historical Society is currently in the middle of a five-year assessment of the state's historic resources, a survey that includes many historic farms. The "Barn Again" program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation has recently bestowed its highest commendation on barn restoration projects in Doniphan, Osage, and Pottawatimie Counties. This concern with agricultural legacies is reinforced as well by the University of Kansas's …

Native American Photography At The Smithsonian: The Shindler Catalogue, Elizabeth Edwards
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This excellent volume is an illustrated reconstruction of what was probably the first exhibition of photographs at the Smithsonian. The subject matter was not the great politicians or celebrities of the times but Native Americans. Most of the photographs were of delegations that visited Washington - including numerous men from the Plains, especially representatives of the Souian peoples photographed in 1858, 1867, and 1868 - and reflected the turbulent inter-cultural politics of the period.

The spiritual part of this earth is as powerful, maybe more powerful than the physical life that we have - that we understand. We have lived in the spiritual environment, and are very much aware of its powers. The certain power places that have certain gifts to man, such as the Covenants, the many Teachings, the many blessings that come from these places-these places we call the Holy Places. The Holy Places are the spiritual environment that we have come to understand, that here is a place that the teachings, the Covenants, are received.
