The Development Of Social And Cultural Geographies In Taiwan: Knowledge Production And Social Relevance, Hsin-Ling Wu, Sue-Ching Jou, Lily Kong Oct 2006

The Development Of Social And Cultural Geographies In Taiwan: Knowledge Production And Social Relevance, Hsin-Ling Wu, Sue-Ching Jou, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Social and cultural geographies have long occupied a marginal position in Taiwan's scholarship in the humanities and social sciences. Despite the influence of the so-called ‘cultural turn’ that has characterized much of Anglo-American scholarship since the 1990s (Barnett 1998), Taiwan's scholarship in the social sciences in general and human geography more specifically has remained relatively untouched by these intellectual currents till very recent years. This paper seeks to examine the social, intellectual and institutional contexts that explain this marginalization, and consider the possibilities for social and cultural geographies' emergence from marginality in Taiwan in the future. This possibility is considered …

Cross-Cultural Encounters: Gringos And Ladinos In Zapatista Territory, Amy Chin Oct 2006

Cross-Cultural Encounters: Gringos And Ladinos In Zapatista Territory, Amy Chin

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper is principally an analysis of the international observers’ experiences in Olga Isabel and the implications of their continual presence in the community. I begin by explaining my methodology in carrying out this project. I then give a brief history of the Zapatistas, followed by a summary of the present situation in Olga Isabel and its historical and political context. The body of the paper examines the experiences of international observers and the effects of their presence within communities. I conclude by placing my findings in the context of the larger Zapatista movement for indigenous rights and autonomy.

Assimilation, Multiculturalism, Hybridity: The Dilemmas Of Ethnic Chinese In Post-Suharto Indonesia, Chang Yau Hoon Jun 2006

Assimilation, Multiculturalism, Hybridity: The Dilemmas Of Ethnic Chinese In Post-Suharto Indonesia, Chang Yau Hoon

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The dominant discourse in accommodating the ethnic Chinese in Indonesia during Suharto's regime was one of assimilation, which forcefully aimed to absorb this minority into the national body. However, continuous official discrimination towards the Chinese placed them in a paradoxical position that made them an easy target of racial and class hostility. The May 1998 anti-Chinese riots proved the failure of the assmilationist policy. The process of democratization has given rise to a proliferation of identity politics in post-Suharto Indonesia. The policy of multiculturalism has been endorsed by Indonesia's current power holders as a preferred approach to rebuilding the nation, …

An Interim Report Of The Viking Age Archaeofauna From Hrísheimar, Mývatn District, N Iceland, Thomas H. Mcgovern, Sophia Perdikaris, Ramona Harrison, Konrad Smiarowski, Norie Manigault May 2006

An Interim Report Of The Viking Age Archaeofauna From Hrísheimar, Mývatn District, N Iceland, Thomas H. Mcgovern, Sophia Perdikaris, Ramona Harrison, Konrad Smiarowski, Norie Manigault

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

The excavations at Hrísheimar in Mývatnssveit in N Iceland are producing a very large archaeofauna, which can now be dated through both radiocarbon and two major volcanic tephra layers (the Landnám tephra of ca AD 871 and the Veiðivötn 930 tephra). While much of the site has been destroyed by wind erosion, substantial midden deposits (which overly earlier structures in some cases) still remain along the NE edge of the site area. While excavation is ongoing and only a small portion of the very substantial archaeofauna has been analyzed so far, it may be useful to present an interim working …

The Politics Of Indigenization: A Case Study Of Development Of Social Work In China, Miu Chung Yan, Kwok Wah Cheung May 2006

The Politics Of Indigenization: A Case Study Of Development Of Social Work In China, Miu Chung Yan, Kwok Wah Cheung

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Internationalization and indigenization are dialectical processes of knowledge transfer. However, social work literature has paid scant attention to the process of indigenization, which can best be understood as one of recontextualization. This paper introduces Basil Bernstein's theory, which contends that recontextualization is a political process, as an analytical tool for us to understand the politics of indigenization. To demonstrate the usefulness of this tool, this paper analyzes how, in China, the Ministry of Civil Affairs and social work academics interactively compete for this control.

Representation Of Middle Eastern Culture Through Belly Dance In The Us, Elisabeth Johnson May 2006

Representation Of Middle Eastern Culture Through Belly Dance In The Us, Elisabeth Johnson

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

In light of the myriad misunderstandings about the Middle East and its people, this paper will seek to analyze how Middle Eastern culture has been represented in the US through the art of belly dance. This project examines what is currently known about the roots of belly dance, especially in relation to how such origins may be presented within the dance, and the first exposures that the American public may have had to belly dance through literary accounts, theatre, and design in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. The representative accuracy and impact of these …

South Goes South: American Perspectives On Southern Immigrants To Brazil, Ernest R. Rheaume May 2006

South Goes South: American Perspectives On Southern Immigrants To Brazil, Ernest R. Rheaume

Senior Honors Projects

Reconstruction following the American Civil War led to conditions in the South that caused upwards of 20,000 Americans to go into exile. Of these, approximately 2,500 to 3,500 made the trip to Brazil and established settlements of varying success. One hundred forty one years later descendents of the original settlers, known as the Confederados, still populate the areas of Americana and Santa Barbara D’Oeste, Brazil. Extensive studies have been conducted on the history of the migration and the resulting settlements, yet conflicting perspectives of the Confederados exist within American society. These include different understandings of the Confederate Battle Flag, the …

The volume is well edited, containing copious notes and a good bibliography.

Review Of Troubled Fields: Men, Emotions, And The Crisis In American Farming By Eric Ramirez-Ferrero, Charles Nuckolls Apr 2006

Review Of Troubled Fields: Men, Emotions, And The Crisis In American Farming By Eric Ramirez-Ferrero, Charles Nuckolls

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Is the family farm an anachronism, to be replaced, sooner or later, by larger and more efficient industrial modes of agriculture? This question achieved special prominence during the "farm crisis" in the 1980s, when thousands of farmers lost their land to foreclosure. Since then the issue has largely been forgotten, except in northwestern Oklahoma, the site of Troubled Fields, where the decline of family farming can be measured in continuing population loss, the breakdown of families, and increased risk of suicide.

Review Of Archaeology On The Edge: New Perspectives From The Northern Plains Edited By Brian Kooyman And Jane Kelley, Raymond Leblanc Apr 2006

Review Of Archaeology On The Edge: New Perspectives From The Northern Plains Edited By Brian Kooyman And Jane Kelley, Raymond Leblanc

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This book is a tribute to the late Dr. Richard Forbis, the figure many Plains archaeologists regard as the founder and nurturer of Plains archaeology in Canada. The book begins with a fond reminiscence by Scott Raymond, a longtime colleague, who relates some of Dick's foibles, his distinctive chuckle, the near permanent fixture of his pipe, but also his sterling qualities as a scholar and teacher.

Review Of The Art Of The Warriors: Rock Art Of The American Plains By James D. Keyser, Kelley Hays-Gilpin Apr 2006

Review Of The Art Of The Warriors: Rock Art Of The American Plains By James D. Keyser, Kelley Hays-Gilpin

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The Art of the Warriors is a beautifully designed and lucid introduction to Plains rock art. Written by one of the foremost authorities on this subject, Forest Service archaeologist James D. Keyser, it neither mystifies nor oversimplifies. This glossy, oversized volume will appeal to three primary audiences: those who love the Great Plains but know little about rock art, those who love rock art but know little about the Great Plains, and scholars who enjoyed Keyser and Klaasen's Plains Indian Rock Art ( 2003) but longed for color photos. Useful endnotes and an extensive bibliography complement the lavishly illustrated text.

Review Of Civic Communion: The Rhetoric Of Community Building By David E. Proctor, Brett Zollinger Apr 2006

Review Of Civic Communion: The Rhetoric Of Community Building By David E. Proctor, Brett Zollinger

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

David Proctor advances the concept of "civic communion" as both a useful heuristic and a process. As the former, it supplies the community researcher and development practitioner with a "lens" for understanding the community scene. As a process, Proctor argues, it constructs and reinforces community. He defines civic communion as "community-coalescing events that establish and open an ethical rhetorical space for creating, crystallizing, and organizing community-building talk," those "collective moments of intense, yet transitory praise for community . . . [and] moments of enthusiastic praise for local community structures." His book sheds social interaction/constructionist light on the phenomenon of community.

Considering The Rationality Of African Ritual Behavior, Joel Grant Mort Apr 2006

Considering The Rationality Of African Ritual Behavior, Joel Grant Mort

Dissertations

The traditional social scientific method undervalues the role that cognitive processes play in human behavior and instead focuses on posited external causal forces, the most common of which is 'culture.' Normative models of rationality, on the other hand, often do suggest and emphasize cognitive reasoning strategies. What is lacking is a familiarity and understanding of what human beings actually do which is, ironically, something social scientists do know something about. Both assume a sort of rational normative baseline cognitive structure and then try to discover those circumstances in which this structure is compromised by the culture, the environment, learning, and …

Book Review: Horizons West: Directing The Western From John Ford To Clint Eastwood, Joanna Hearne Jan 2006

Book Review: Horizons West: Directing The Western From John Ford To Clint Eastwood, Joanna Hearne

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

First published in 1969, Horizons West was one of the early structuralist treatments of a Hollywood genre and a pivotal text in American writing on the Western. Borrowing from anthropological studies of myth, Kitses outlined a series of binary oppositions between the individual and the community, nature and culture, the West and the East, and wedded this thematic outline to a stylistic exploration of three directors: Anthony Mann, Budd Boetticher, and Sam Peckinpah. The book signaled serious academic consideration of Westerns not only as a legitimate art form but also as a complex and meaningful expression of American cultural history. …
