The Origin Of The Synodical Conferences, Walter Uhlig May 1965

The Origin Of The Synodical Conferences, Walter Uhlig

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The years in which events occurred that culminated in the establishment of the Synodical Conference were some of the most significant years in the history of Lutheranism in America. Mighty forces were at work in those days, forces that affected all Lutheran synods in this country, forces that led to warm synodical friendships and bitter synodical hostilities. In this study some of these forces are examined as they affected the six synods that formed the Synodical Conference and also certain synods that did not align themselves with the Conference. The background and general emphasis of each of these groups are …

Luther As Exegete, Douglas Carter Sep 1961

Luther As Exegete, Douglas Carter

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the era of the 16th-century Reformation it was given to Martin Luther to fill a role unique in its range. He was a controversialist who joined issue with the regnant theology of his day; a reformer who brought about such a renewal of the church as many of his contemporaries and predecessors had dreamed of; the reorganizer who changed the ecclesiastical map of Europe; a pastoral administrator; a spiritual director; and a writer of great versatility whose published works run to more than 50,000 pages in the Erlangen edition.

Scripture And Tradition In The Council Of Trent, Richard Baepler

Concordia Theological Monthly

This study deals with the historical circumstances surrounding the Roman Catholic doctrinal decision at the Council of Trent regarding the authority of Scripture and tradition. By examining this decision in the light of events which led to its formulation as well as in the light of its subsequent fate, we shall be introduced to an issue which has become very much alive in both Roman Catholic and Protestant thought.

The Case Of Athanasius Against Arius, Samuel Labuchli Jun 1959

The Case Of Athanasius Against Arius, Samuel Labuchli

Concordia Theological Monthly

Every age must restate the events of history because in every age these events appear in a specific focus. The contemporary theological discussion concerning ontological and existential knowledge, the essence of Biblical faith, and the meaning of language in Christian theology make the controversy of the fourth century a highly modern issue. Indeed, the 20th century has to state its Christological position afresh. It cannot simply repeat the fathers between Nicaea and Constantinople. Yet it can learn a great deal from these fathers by seeking to understand, sine ira et studio, the case of Athanasius versus Arius.

A Semantic Study Of Ecclesia Before 100 A.D., Harold Edwin Cline Jan 1959

A Semantic Study Of Ecclesia Before 100 A.D., Harold Edwin Cline

Graduate Thesis Collection

In studying the background and origin of meaning for this word [ecclesia], this paper will seek to investigate the pagan, the Jewish, and the Christian literature in this order. Of couse, as the preliminary discussion has so far indicated, the primary weight and burden of study will be upond the Septugintal influence. The three stages to be developed are reminiscent of the comment of R.C. Trench in his opening comments concerning ecclesia. He named them as heathen, Jewish, and Christian. The development of these stages will be united and brought together to make some pertinent conclusions in the final chapter …

Review Of "Bad Boll" Conferences, Paul M. Bretscher Nov 1954

Review Of "Bad Boll" Conferences, Paul M. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

"Building Theological Bridges" is the appropriate subtitle of the sainted Professor Fred. E. Mayer's The Story of Bad Boll. In this booklet, which is a lasting memorial to Dr. Mayer's synthetic and sympathetic mind, the author summarized the three theological conferences conducted by our Synod at Bad Boll, Wűrttemberg, Germany, in the summer of 1948. The readiness of officials of our Synod to "build theological bridges" connecting our Church with European Lutheran Churches was so favorably received by the participants in the first Bad Boll venture that in the opinion of our officials these conferences needed to be continued.

In Memoriam Joh. Albrecht Bengel, Jaroslav Pelikan Nov 1952

In Memoriam Joh. Albrecht Bengel, Jaroslav Pelikan

Concordia Theological Monthly

November 2, 1952, is the two-hundredth anniversary of the death of Johann Albrecht Bengel, a leading figure in the history of Lutheran theology. He has exerted an influence over subsequent Biblical scholarship comparable to that of Luther and Flacius in the sixteenth century, the Buxtorfs in the seventeenth, von Hofmann in the nineteenth, and Schlatter in the twentieth. Until a generation or two ago his Gnomon Novi Testamenti was a commonplace in the libraries of the evangelical clergy; and some of the works which have come to replace it, like Dean Alford's commentary and the Expositors Greek Testament, are expansions …

Evangelical Christianity In America And Its Significance For Evangelical Christianity In Germany, Fritz Hahn Mar 1950

Evangelical Christianity In America And Its Significance For Evangelical Christianity In Germany, Fritz Hahn

Concordia Theological Monthly

The first impressions on a German visitor are disturbing and confusing, because he is here confronted by a tremendous multiplicity of churches and sects. The many divisions in Protestantism are due in part to the various historical backgrounds and to the diversity of languages formerly used in their church services. Furthermore, the tendency toward individualism and independence, particularly strong among the pioneers, was an important factor in producing many separate church bodies. That human interests, bigotry, and pharisaism contributed toward the formation of sects is not to be denied. American evangelical Christianity is in no sense of the word homogeneous.

The Marburg Colloquy Of 1529: A Textual Study, George John Beto Feb 1945

The Marburg Colloquy Of 1529: A Textual Study, George John Beto

Concordia Theological Monthly

The primary sources on the Marburg Colloquy are comparatively numerous. While an official transcript of the proceedings was not kept, certain observers took notes and immediately after the conference supplemented these notes with the material they had retained in their memories. All of the sources are untranslated and are found in either German or Latin.

Thou Art Peter, Reinold Waldemar Janetzke May 1931

Thou Art Peter, Reinold Waldemar Janetzke

Bachelor of Divinity

TU ES PETRUS ET SUPER HANC PETRAM AEDIFICABO ECCLESIAM MEAM," Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church". These words, written in gigantic letters of gold, appear around the beautiful dome of St. Peters in Rome which the genius of Michelangelo erected above the dust of a Galilaean fisherman. As the Church of St. Peter in Rome, the grandest and most eminent basilica in the world, triumphantly rises above the grave of this Galilaean fisherman, just so does the ecclesiastical system of Roman Catholicism find its foundation upon the confession of this Apostle and upon the …
