Moche-Wari Textiles From Huaca Del Sol, Moche Influence In The Middle Horizon, Amy Oakland
IX Jornadas Internacionales de Textiles Precolombinos y Amerindianos / 9th International Conference on PreColumbian and Amerindian Textiles, Museo delle Culture, Milan, 2022
This paper analyzes a selection of textiles excavated in 2013 in the destroyed late Middle Horizon (AD 800-1000) cemetery on Huaca del Sol, Huacas de Moche in the Moche Valley of northern Peru. The Huaca Sol textile group was woven with local, Moche style S-spun cotton yarns between AD 888-1050, calibrated radiocarbon dates along with a small number of Wari textiles, late Moche and Wari ceramics and ceramics in Casma and Cajamarca styles. Textile structure and design provide the basis for reconstruction into complete garment types known to other Middle Horizon collections on the central and southern coast where Moche …

Inka Khipus, Thread Wrappings And Subject Markers, Lucrezia Milillo
IX Jornadas Internacionales de Textiles Precolombinos y Amerindianos / 9th International Conference on PreColumbian and Amerindian Textiles, Museo delle Culture, Milan, 2022
This work aims to contribute to our current understanding of how information was organized in khipus, Andean colourful knotted cords used as writing. If the idea that khipu signs could work as a flow chart was common in the last two decades, it is not until the notion of kayte as subject marker was elaborated by Sabine Hyland on the basis of Julio C. Tello's notes that the theory could be discussed on more empirical grounds. So far, the term “kayte” applied to needlework bundles, pompons or tufts attached to the beginning of the primary cord. In this work, the …

Behind The Scenes In Museum Collecting: The Destinies Of Henry Wellcome’S Pre-Hispanic Textiles, Penelope Dransart
IX Jornadas Internacionales de Textiles Precolombinos y Amerindianos / 9th International Conference on PreColumbian and Amerindian Textiles, Museo delle Culture, Milan, 2022
In this article, I explore the sale of pre-Hispanic textiles from Andean countries, especially Peru, demonstrating networks between collectors, auction houses and researchers. Sir Henry S. Wellcome (1856-1936) was a North American pharmaceutical entrepreneur. After transferring his commercial interests to London in 1880, he bought textiles and other antiquities at auctions. I outline the activities of Wellcome staff in registering the textiles in Wellcome’s store at Willesden, London. Textiles which preserve Wellcome labels now in the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge, and the National Museums of Liverpool are described. I examine the case of a distinctive Wari …

IX Jornadas Internacionales de Textiles Precolombinos y Amerindianos / 9th International Conference on PreColumbian and Amerindian Textiles, Museo delle Culture, Milan, 2022
In this paper we present the strategies adopted to conserve a Chuquibamba textile circulating in the antique market. The piece had been reconstructed randomly to give it an “intact” appearance and facilitate its sale. The interventions made it possible to reconstruct its original appearance and to do some conjectures about its function.

La Representación De Los Seres Voladores En Tejidos Ceremoniales Tiwanaku, Elisa Cont
IX Jornadas Internacionales de Textiles Precolombinos y Amerindianos / 9th International Conference on PreColumbian and Amerindian Textiles, Museo delle Culture, Milan, 2022

Knot Anomalies On Inka Khipus: Revising Locke’S Knot Typology, Sabine Hyland
Knot Anomalies On Inka Khipus: Revising Locke’S Knot Typology, Sabine Hyland
IX Jornadas Internacionales de Textiles Precolombinos y Amerindianos / 9th International Conference on PreColumbian and Amerindian Textiles, Museo delle Culture, Milan, 2022
In 2007, in the IV Actas de las Jornadas Internacionales sobre Textiles Precolombinos, Kylie Quave noted the existence of various structural anomalies in khipus presumed to date to the Late Horizon. These anomalies included the use of non-cotton vegetal fibres, the inclusion of single red strings, subsidiary cords that are plied through rather than half hitched, and the placement of long knots and figure-8 knots “in a way that precludes a numerical reading”. Since Quave’s article, there has been little examination of such anomalies, nor have scholars known whether such anomalies were to be found in khipus that had …

MA Theses
This thesis critically evaluates key initiatives in New York from 2002 to 2023, notably "Brazil: Body and Soul" and "Tarsila do Amaral: Inventing Modern Art in Brazil" at institutions like the Guggenheim and MoMA, highlighting potential shortcomings in representing Brazilian culture accurately. Additionally, it discusses exhibitions like "Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca: Five Times Brazil" at the New Museum and “The Yanomami Struggle” at The Shed for their unique approaches to showcasing Brazilian art. The methodology involves analyzing significant exhibitions in New York from 2000 to 2023, evaluating their efforts to globalize Brazilian art, and understanding their global impact. …
Art And Entertainment Collaboration: The Benefits And Challenges Of Auction Houses Crossover Collaborations In The Global Art Market, Yushi Chen
MA Theses
Over the past decades, crossover collaboration has become increasingly important
in the contemporary art market as an effective strategy to reach a wholly new customer segment. This research focuses on the crossover collaboration between art and entertainment by exploring the partnerships between auction houses and singers. It uses a case study as a research methodology to analyze Sotheby’s partnerships with three famous singers, including Nigo, T.O.P., and Jay Chou, by which the auction house successfully entered the Asian art market. The research found that these examples have demonstrated Sotheby’s how has integrated crossover collaboration into its sustainable competitive advantages. The …
Warhol Uncovered: From Byzantium To Pop, Kassandra Ibrahim
Warhol Uncovered: From Byzantium To Pop, Kassandra Ibrahim
MA Theses
Despite being one of the most extensively researched artists of the twentieth century, Andy Warhol’s identity as a Carpatho-Rusyn Byzantine Catholic is often omitted by a majority of sources. Inspired by the 2020-2021 exhibition Andy Warhol: Revelation, this thesis examines the aesthetic influence that the artist’s religious upbringing had on his oeuvre. By examining Eastern Christian icons and church interiors, I define key characteristics of the Byzantine aesthetic — gold grounds, stylized frontal figures, flattening of depth, seriality, excessive decoration, etc. — and identify its usage in Warhol’s Pop Art. I also explore the Carpatho-Ruysn folk art tradition of pysanky …

The Art Of Re-Presenting : Power And Agency For Black Women Amid Trauma, Oppression And Everyday Life, Diane Carol Vermette
The Art Of Re-Presenting : Power And Agency For Black Women Amid Trauma, Oppression And Everyday Life, Diane Carol Vermette
Wayne State University Theses
In this thesis, the work and lives of seven Black American women artists who created artwork in the twentieth century are explored to discover how they have used their work to represent Black women in America. Using four critical concepts: Double Consciousness, First, Second, and Third Wave Feminism, Black Feminist Thought, and Intersectionality, several critical questions are answered in order to discover the historical and social context in which they worked and how this affected their ability to reflect the lives, struggles, hopes, and identities of themselves and other Black women. Using the word re-presenting as a signifier of how …
An Examination Of The Visual And Textual Influences On The Anthology Of American Folk Music, Ben Collier
An Examination Of The Visual And Textual Influences On The Anthology Of American Folk Music, Ben Collier
History Theses
The Anthology of American Folk Music is a collection of eight-four selections of southern vernacular recordings made for commercial record labels in the 1920s and 1930s and assembled into a unified collage by Harry Smith. Smith was an experimental filmmaker, painter, and self-taught anthropologist with a deep interest in renaissance hermeticism and mysticism who worked with Moe Asch in 1952 to release the six-record set and accompanying handbook on Folkways Records. The release was heralded by musicians and critics as an essential piece of influence on the folk music revival. Despite this, the Anthology sold poorly and quickly faced legal …
The Unseen River And Infrastructural Silences: The Santa Ana River And The Ontology Of Floods, Cooper Lennon Crane
The Unseen River And Infrastructural Silences: The Santa Ana River And The Ontology Of Floods, Cooper Lennon Crane
Pomona Senior Theses
This article discusses the history of land development and infrastructure along the Santa Ana River in Southern California. The river plays a significant role in the landscape of many of Southern California’s cities and urban geographies but has been relatively underdiscussed in literature. This article approaches the river using a combination of historic ethnography and sociocultural theory to unpack the meanings of the infrastructure of the river and its relation to Southern Californians. From these meanings, the article places the river in context with environmental politics, urban development, and water management issues in California today. The article argues that the …

Integrating Art And Ai: Evaluating The Educational Impact Of Ai Tools In Digital Art History Learning, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
This study delves into the burgeoning intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and art history education, an area that has been relatively unexplored. The research focuses on how AI art generators impact learning outcomes in art history for both undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in Ancient Art courses, covering eras from ancient Mesopotamia to the fall of Rome. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the study analyzes AI-generated artworks, reflective essays, and survey responses to assess how these generative tools influence students’ comprehension, engagement, and creative interpretation of historical artworks. The study reveals that the use of AI tools in art history not …

Nuestras Voces: Representation And Visibility Of Latinx Women Archaeologists In The U.S., Milsy Westendorff
Nuestras Voces: Representation And Visibility Of Latinx Women Archaeologists In The U.S., Milsy Westendorff
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
According to the 2020 Society for American Archaeology Members Assessment Survey, Latinx individuals comprise the largest minority group within archaeology. However, there is no scholarship or literature focusing specifically on the experiences of Latinx women archaeologists based in the U.S. This research fills in that gap through ethnographic interviews with 9 Latinx women archaeologists. By centering their experiences, we are able to see how their background and identity impacts and influences the way they conduct archaeology and the questions they ask, the barriers that are unique to them as Latinx women, why there is such a lack of representation of …
The Regenarrative: How To Change The Story In Order To Change The Future, S. Rose Bigheart O'Leary
The Regenarrative: How To Change The Story In Order To Change The Future, S. Rose Bigheart O'Leary
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Abstract
In the era of Climate Change, many are concerned that the end of the Anthropocene, or the end of the era of human life on Earth, is upon us. Western European colonialism and its subsequent systems (settler-colonialism, colonial-capitalism, and globalization - sometimes termed “neocolonialism”) have all been implicated in contributing to unsustainable behaviors linked to accelerating climate change. In searching for possible solutions, some have called for listening to Indigenous Peoples, citing ethics of sustainability found among many Indigenous cultures. However, the cultural products of settler-colonialism are still dominant in ways that do not allow for Indigenous worldviews to …
Classic Taíno Foodways And Ritual Practices: A Comparative Paleoethnobotanical Analysis From Cinnamon Bay, St. John, Anna N. Chitwood
Classic Taíno Foodways And Ritual Practices: A Comparative Paleoethnobotanical Analysis From Cinnamon Bay, St. John, Anna N. Chitwood
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Macrobotanical analysis of Taíno habitation sites throughout the Caribbean has provided evidence of what comprised the Taíno diet. Although those analyses are important to our understanding of the Taíno, there has been a lack of analysis from ritual sites, and the data recovered from existing sites are limited. This thesis presents the results of analysis of paleoethnobotanical remains from Cinnamon Bay (VIIS 191), a shoreline Taíno ritual site located on St. John in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) that dates to approximately 1000 CE – 1490 CE, in order to gain a better understand how Indigenous Taíno people interacted …
Domesticating Luxury: A Comparative Study Of Moche Fineware Distribution Within The Moche Valleys, Annalisa Fallon Amber
Domesticating Luxury: A Comparative Study Of Moche Fineware Distribution Within The Moche Valleys, Annalisa Fallon Amber
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This study examines 188 vessels from the Moche Valley in northern Peru that are listed in the Museo Larco online collection, to determine the distribution of Moche bulk luxury items like ceramics from urban centers to surrounding towns and rural communities. For the study, "bulk luxury" refers to the widespread availability of elite goods that are produced in large quantities but retain a sense of high status among a wide range of people. These items commonly appear in the form of bottle neck sculptural stirrup handle vessels. This definition serves as a heuristic tool to explore the role of these …
Reinterpreting Fort Ancient Plant Relationships Through Native Science And Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Bailey Rae Raab
Reinterpreting Fort Ancient Plant Relationships Through Native Science And Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Bailey Rae Raab
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Paleoethnobotanical analyses over the past several decades have shed light on subsistence practices, agricultural strategies, and environmental interactions of members of the Fort Ancient culture, an Indigenous society that thrived in the Ohio Valley from 1000 to 1650 CE. Largely absent from these conversations, however, are discussions of non-food uses of plants or considerations of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK). By combining multiple different sources of knowledge, a more holistic view of people-plant relationships within the Fort Ancient culture may be established, one that allows us to better understand these relationships in the past and present. In this thesis, I synthesize …

Europe As A Celebrated Community Of Culture. The Council Of Europe’S Art Exhibitions In The 1950s, Lefteris Spyrou
Artl@s Bulletin
Born as part of a Europe-building process in the aftermath of WWII, the Council of Europe emerged, during the 1950s, as the leading intergovernmental organisation for cultural cooperation in Europe. This paper examines the Art Exhibitions held under its auspices in different western-European cities between 1954 and 1961. Presenting in chronological order the major artistic movements in Europe from the Renaissance to 1914, the exhibitions were quite successful in terms of public attendance, and became the most important institutional initiative in visualising the idea of European unity based on a shared cultural heritage.
The New World Debate And The 18th-Century Images Of America That Brought Europe Together, Catherine Dossin
The New World Debate And The 18th-Century Images Of America That Brought Europe Together, Catherine Dossin
Artl@s Bulletin
The New World Debate offers a privileged site to reconstruct and study Europe’s self-image in the 18th century. Taking on Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle, Rameau’s Les Indes Galantes, Voltaire’s Alzire et les Americains, and De Pauw’s Recherches philosophiques sur les Américains, this paper traces the process through which Europe elaborated a Eurocentric view of the world organization through a paternalistic, usually benevolent but always contemptuous, relation to America that would come to define Europe’s colonial expansion of the 19th century and make colonialism an essential, yet uncomfortable, dimension of Europe’s modern identity.
Fashioning Europe: Identity And Dress In Early Modern Costume Books, Emilia Olechnowicz
Fashioning Europe: Identity And Dress In Early Modern Costume Books, Emilia Olechnowicz
Artl@s Bulletin
This article aims to demonstrate how early modern costume books attempted to define the identities of Europeans. They presented a system of social stratifications, describing the presumed differences between people of various origins, age, gender, and, above all, social position. The existence of these differences was presented as part of an order not only social and political but also moral and religious. On closer inspection, however, it becomes apparent that these differences had as much to do with actual cultural disparities between people as with the different perspectives and attitudes of the authors of the individual books.
