Historiographical Interpretations Of The Diplomatic Career Of John Quincy Adams, Nicholas E. Zilempe
Historiographical Interpretations Of The Diplomatic Career Of John Quincy Adams, Nicholas E. Zilempe
GLI MA in American History Student Works
This historiography paper seeks to determine how historians have interpreted the diplomatic career of John Quincy Adams over the last one hundred and seventy-five years. As sixth President of the United States and son of second President and Founding Father John Adams, John Quincy Adams has been the subject of significant historical interpretation since his 1848 death. Though the demand for writing about his life was strong in the immediate wake of his death, the subsequent body of work that permeated throughout the nineteenth century ultimately fell short of addressing the monumental diplomatic career Adams held before his Presidential and …

Maternal Sacrifice And Resilience: The Legacy Of Harriet Jacobs And Enslaved Black Motherhood, Beverly A. Duran
GLI MA in American History Student Works
This paper explores the unique role of enslaved Black women in preserving family and cultural identity during the American slavery era, focusing on the life and writings of Harriet Jacobs. Through her autobiography, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Jacobs exemplifies the extraordinary sacrifices and resilience of enslaved mothers, who navigated the dual burdens of racial and gender oppression. The study delves into Jacobs’s years-long confinement in an attic to avoid separation from her children and her use of storytelling, education, and cultural practices to resist dehumanization. It highlights how enslaved women, despite systemic constraints, developed strategies to …

Faculty Journal Articles
This interdisciplinary research investigates the significance of the community connection between Black radio personnel and their audiences through the lens of collective and cultural memory narratives. The study addresses two key research questions. First, how do Black radio personnel’s collective and cultural memories contribute to the Black public sphere? Second, what are the defining characteristics in developing parasocial relationships and interactions between Black radio personalities and their audiences? The qualitative research employs an autoethnographic methodology and a questionnaire, utilizing insights gained from the author’s experiences working at a Black-owned radio network and station. The questionnaire, distributed to key informants in …

Transatlantic Connections: Reconsidering The Outcomes Of The Arts And Crafts Movement Through The Women's Experience, Britain And The United States, 1860-1920, Tiffany B. Beasley
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
The British Arts and Crafts movement (1860-1914) was a call for the return to artisan craftsmanship as a response to mass-production driven by the Industrial Revolution (1760-1830). Historically, the movement has been viewed as a socialist concept developed by men. However, in 1979, a feminist intervention in women's history challenged this masculinist perspective. As the movement spread to the United States (1870-1920), first to New England and then to the South in New Orleans, it also expanded into concepts that moved beyond craftsmanship and into women's issues, such as education, suffrage, and professional work opportunities. It is now evident that …
Representations Of Violence Against Native American Women, Christine York
Representations Of Violence Against Native American Women, Christine York
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
It is the aim of this study to provide detailed attention to the representation of violence against Native American women throughout American films and literature. Native American women have been persecuted against since the times of colonization; however, there has been a recent uptake in this crime. This crime has been seen throughout many forms of art, but has not often been a focal point to these artforms. In order to argue that the violence these women experience needs to be central to the texts they are seen in, a comparison between three different texts is imperative. These texts are …

These prompt cards were inspired by the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) and American Indigenous Library Association (AILA) presentation on “Talk Story: Centering Oral Traditions to Advance Literacy Justice and Transform Community Relationships” at the ALA Annual Conference 2023. One representative from APALA and one from AILA shared an oral storytelling experience. Afterward, a panel discussion was held discussing “Talk Story as a community of practice to recenter youth literacy programs as intergenerational literacy opportunities with an emphasis on oral histories and traditions, intersectional community building, and cultural sensitivities.”1 The APALA Family Literacy Focus Committee decided it would be …
The Years Of Embers In Mauritania: Ethnicity And Narratives, Hawa Saidou Barane Ba
The Years Of Embers In Mauritania: Ethnicity And Narratives, Hawa Saidou Barane Ba
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
The borders in Africa were drawn according to the interests of colonial powers and without consideration of the continent’s ethnic, cultural, and linguistic realities. Thus, roughly 80% of African countries borders were drawn without considering the crucial and pre-existing realities of pre-colonial African societies, splitting ethnically and culturally homogenous groups and grouping diverse others under the same political unit. (Beck, 1993; Lefebvre, 2011). Consequently, many African countries end up with an ethnically diverse population that faces the challenge of living harmoniously together in social cohesion, creating an environment prone to ethnic conflicts, political instabilities, and weak national identities. Mauritania, for …

The Courts And Intercollegiate Athletics, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Over the past several weeks, the world of college sports has witnessed considerable turmoil and the prospect of major change. The future of the NCAA is in doubt, at least in its current form. The myth of the “student athlete” under the banner of amateurism is dead. The term should be laid to rest and never be seen in print again. It was a fabricated term created by former NCAA president, Walter Byers, designed to allow the NCAA to keep the money earned from intercollegiate athletics for itself, and out of the hands of the athletes.
Black Nationalism And Black Power’S Influence On Karamu House, I'Maya Gibbs
Black Nationalism And Black Power’S Influence On Karamu House, I'Maya Gibbs
Discussions
This article will explore the impact of the Black Nationalist and Black Power Movement on Karamu House, the oldest Black theater in America. Karamu House, initially established as an integrated settlement house in 1915, later became an influential community theater in Cleveland, Ohio. By examining how an integrated theater shifted into prominently producing radical Black artistry, this article will uncover how Black Nationalism and Black Power changed the leadership, artistry, and goals of Karamu House. Furthermore, studying this shift highlights Black artists’ historical utilization of theater as a form of resistance against racial oppression and Karamu House’s participation in this …

Al Jinan الجنان
The letter talks about the Andalusian traveler Ibn Jubeir, who visited Syria and Lebanon on his journey to the Pilgrimage of the Holy House of God, where I chose from this trip Syria and Lebanon, and to see the most important Syrian and Lebanese cities he visited. We then show the beautiful images mentioned by Ibn Jubeir in describing each city of cities, nature, air, antiquities and social customs of its people uniquely, entering Manbij, Aleppo, Ma'rat al-Numan, Hama, Homs, Damascus, Tibnin, Banias, Mount Lebanon and Tyre.
Ibn Jubeir was creative in portraying the beauty of Syria, the magic of …

The Muslims and The Crusaders were pay attention to the medical aspect to preserve human power during the era of the Crusaders, medicine entered the circle of conflict between the Crusaders and Muslims. In the Crusaders Emirates, there are two teams of doctors: the first group includes Muslims doctors, eastern Christians and Jews, while the second group includes Latin doctors. The first group was more advanced than the second group, as recognized by the Crusaders historians themselves. However, the Latin doctors succeeded in treating some cases of illness, but they failed to treat others, as recognized by contemporary Arab and …

In this research I titled, “Abu l -Salt al - Hirawi and the Problematic Issue of both Narrating (Riwayah) and Deep Comprehension (Diraya) of Prophetic Statements”, I pursue the biography of a scholar well-known for his speech arguments that reflected sophisticated knowledge and acute acumen in his age, which in turn helped curb the spread of Jahami and Mu’tazila into the House of Caliphate. The life of this intellectual has stimulated me to write this research that may help expose and reactivate some of the bright and beneficial aspects of his attitudes, and this may indeed help us reach some …
