Throughout the Civil War, separated from home churches, Christianity came to most soldiers from chaplains serving on the battlefields alongside them. However, as the war waged, men on both sides became prisoners in need of spiritual care beyond the battlefield. With the establishment of Prisoners of War (POW) camps, the spiritual needs and availability of Christianity to prisoners became a vital component to the survival of the prisoners. Thus, to fully understand the treatment of the POWs, it is necessary to analyze the treatment of Christianity and chaplains within POW camps. Social Distortion In Prison Life: Life On The Inside For Civil War Prisoners Of War, Marybeth Allison

Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History

Understanding the day-to-day life of prisoners of war is crucial to understanding their experience. This study focuses on the experience of Union POWs as they struggled with extreme levels of physical deprivation, psychological abuse, and brutal treatment at the hands of guards and, in some cases, fellow prisoners. They often coped through engagement in everyday activities such as letter-writing, Bible-reading, playing sports, and other means.In the process, these survivors formed a strong bond that enabled them to endure these difficult conditions.

Cathy Kidman, is a 60-year-old lesbian activist who has been involved in LGBTQ and HIV/AIDS advocacy work in Maine since the 1990s. Kidman first became involved in activism through her work at The AIDS Project in Portland in the late 1980s, during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This led her to become an adult advisor for the LGBTQ youth organization Outright, which she helped build into a nonprofit organization. Kidman describes how the AIDS epidemic catalyzed LGBTQ activism, bringing together the gay, lesbian, and bisexual communities that had previously been more separate. Penny Pollard is a 71-year-old lesbian, who grew up in a middle-class Catholic family in Massachusetts and is the youngest of three children. She discusses her coming out process, her experiences in the LGBTQ community in San Francisco during the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and her career path which included various jobs such as furniture making, and speech-language pathology. Margaret “Margie” Schoeller is a 65-year-old newly-wed lesbian, retired OB/GYN, LGBTQ+ activist, and aspiring interfaith chaplain. Born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Schoeller reflects fondly on her upbringing in a progressive Presbyterian community, as well as her exposure to the arts and access to excellent education. In 1977, she moved to Maine to attend Bowdoin College, where she came out in 1981 during an era of significant cultural and social transformation for the gay and lesbian community.

The politically and socially tumultuous world of the mid-20th century in both Argentina and the United States inspired the creation of two incredibly influential comic strips: Joaquín Salvador Lavado’s, also known as Quino’s, Mafalda in Argentina, and Charles Schultz’s Peanuts in the United States. These comics changed the popular conception of childhood in their respective countries by reflecting the cultural shifts which challenged existing social conventions like family organization. The Black Death, the second major plague pandemic caused by the spread of the bacteria Yersinia pestis, emerged in the Holy Roman Empire in 1348. Throughout its spread until 1352, the plague devastated residents of the Holy Roman Empire regardless of demographic features. However, Christians at the time believed that members of Jewish communities died at significantly lower rates than themselves, and already existing sentiments of antisemitism grew into the assignment of blame onto Jews. This concurrent spread of plague and antisemitism resulted in pogroms and other forms of mass violence against Jewish communities across Europe, but specifically in the …
