How Robespierre's Hostility Toward Traditional Religion Led To The Terror, Nuray Bamanie
How Robespierre's Hostility Toward Traditional Religion Led To The Terror, Nuray Bamanie
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The research attempts to explain, from the perspective of Historical Studies of Revolutions, Maximilien Robespierre's hostility to France's state religion and how it led to the excesses of the Terror between 1792-1794. Robespierre appeared at the most radical phase of the Revolution, that began in 1792 and lasted up to 1794. He placed the belief in the Revolution as a priority to everything and justified faith in the cult of the Supreme Being as part of France's new Revolution. Robespierre is a controversial figure. In the historiography, historians are divided between those who are infatuated with him and those that …
From Classrooms To Conflict: How Missionary Education Paved The Way To The Korean War, Douglas K. Sutherland
From Classrooms To Conflict: How Missionary Education Paved The Way To The Korean War, Douglas K. Sutherland
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation explores the pivotal role of Protestant missionaries and humanitarian actors in Korea’s quest for a unified, independent nation, examining their influence on social, cultural, and political transformations through education. Beginning with the arrival of the first Protestant missionaries in the late 19th century, the study delves into their impact on Korean society by establishing schools and hospitals that introduced Western education and healthcare practices, challenging traditional Confucian norms and fostering a new intellectual and ideological landscape. These institutions became centers of modernity and nationalist ideologies, cultivating a generation of Korean leaders who played significant roles in the independence …
Intelligence Assessment And Response Toward Japan By The British And Chinese In Malaya During The Second World War, 1939-1945, Guo Shuaishuai
Intelligence Assessment And Response Toward Japan By The British And Chinese In Malaya During The Second World War, 1939-1945, Guo Shuaishuai
Student Works (2020-2029)
The thesis draws three main conclusions from its findings. Firstly, during the Second World War, British intelligence mistakenly assessed Japan’s motives in occupying French Indochina by inaccurately perceiving the occupation as an act to attack China. Despite internal debates within British intelligence agencies by the end of 1940, factors such as the “cognitive closure” effect, interference from intelligence noise, and internal Japanese uncertainties contributed to the misinterpretation of Japan’s strategic intent in occupying French Indochina. Secondly, the effectiveness of British intelligence in addressing Japanese espionage in Malaya was limited. Even with a thorough understanding of the Japanese espionage activities in …

Towards The Non-Spectacle: Responses To Necropolitics In The Artwork Of Teresa Margolles And Maya Watanabe, Leslie Anne Condon
Masters Theses
How do we engage with artwork that addresses complicated histories
of colonialism and political violence, specifically intangible and
incomprehensible violence? Mexican artist Teresa Margolles’ 2005 work, Lote
Bravo, is named after and composed of the soil from a mass grave site
discovered in 1995 in the southeastern corner of Ciudad Juárez, a city known
internationally for the femicide that has continued to haunt its streets and
peripheries since the 1990s. Peruvian filmmaker Maya Watanabe’s 2019 film
Liminal cinematically documents the official exhumation of two mass graves
in the Ayacucho and Huánuco regions of the Andes highlands, where
thousands of …
Myth, Murder, And Mayhem: Discerning The ‘Other’ In Our Flag Means Death, Sara Brown
Myth, Murder, And Mayhem: Discerning The ‘Other’ In Our Flag Means Death, Sara Brown
Mythopoeic Society Seminar Proceedings
Although the television series Our Flag Means Death presents on the surface as a romantic comedy, it is enhanced by mythic elements that infuse the narrative with a clear sense of the fantastic. Here, the pirates exist in a Secondary World that openly draws upon the Primary (both in terms of historiography and legend); hence 18th-century piracy and British colonialism can interact seamlessly with human-to-animal-transformations (paying homage to the Greek myth of Ceyx and Alcyone) without seeming either disconcerting or anomalous – all co-exist comfortably in Faerie. OFMD both inverts and deconstructs mythopoeia; the Primary World myths of the Gentleman …

Tolle Superbiam: Divitiae Non Nocebunt Community, Renunciation, And The Fall Of Rome: Wealth In The Pelagian Controversy, Charlie Evans
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
During the fourth and fifth centuries, discourse about Christian almsgiving and wealth proliferated widely as charitable institutions and ascetic communities began to form, such that “social norms and expectations regarding poverty were also in flux.”[i] Congregations across the Roman Empire were trying to discern what was the Christian way to understand the relationship between wealth and the Christian life: Should good Christians have wealth? Augustine’s and Pelagius’ early fifth-century discourses on wealth which the Pelagian Controversy produced were pivotal in providing answers to this question. Augustine’s views on wealth formally triumphed at Ravenna in 418. Good Christians could have …
Uncovering Maria Edgeworth’S Strategic Political Influence Through Her Unpublished Letters, Autumn G. Hall
Uncovering Maria Edgeworth’S Strategic Political Influence Through Her Unpublished Letters, Autumn G. Hall
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849) was one of the most prolific Anglo-Irish novelists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. While Edgeworth’s novels are regularly discussed among Regency-era scholars, researchers have rarely considered her letters and correspondence, especially in relation to her role in contemporary politics. During my time on the Maria Edgeworth Letters Project team, I researched Edgeworth’s previously unpublished letters, which provided a unique view of her strategic political correspondence network. Through her writing, Edgeworth was able to voice her thoughts while also remaining publicly complacent with restrictive societal norms imposed on women. In my article, I argue that through her …

Thought And Exemplary Islamic Nationalism Of The Early Days Of Independence Indonesia: Learning From Ki Bagus Hadikusumo, Dikdik Baehaqi Arif, Sapriya Sapriya, Dasim Budimansyah, Syaifullah Syaifullah
Jurnal Civics: Media Kajian Kewarganegaraan
Indonesian nationalism is characterised by a blend of religious and national identities that coexist and reinforce each other. This paper presents a profile of the background of Ki Bagus Hadikusumo's thoughts, life, and nationalism during the early days of Indonesian independence. Ki Bagus Hadikusumo is one of Indonesia's national heroes who can be classified as an Islamic nationalist during the formulation of the Indonesian state. This figure, active in the Muhammadiyah Islamic movement organisation, has significantly contributed to the formulation and establishment of Pancasila as the basis of the state. The life background thought, and Muhammadiyah as the organisation of …

Becoming Part Of The Town And Gown: A History Of Wilfrid Laurier University's First Racialized Faculty And Students, Tedla Desta
The Laurier Legacy Project
In this article, Tedla Desta explores the deep connection between Wilfrid Laurier University and the Kitchener-Waterloo region, focusing on the historical contributions of the Black community, which has been present in the area since the early 1800s. Early Black settlers, such as Peter Edward Susand and John Frederick Augustus Sykes Fayette, played key roles in shaping the region’s social and cultural foundations. Desta also addresses the increase in racialized students during the 1950s and 60s, particularly through the International Business Program, while questioning why the university prioritized international students over established local Black communities. Early Black students like Seth K. …

Restitution Of Jewish Property In Northern Transylvania During The Early Postwar Years, Stefan Cristian Ionescu
Restitution Of Jewish Property In Northern Transylvania During The Early Postwar Years, Stefan Cristian Ionescu
History Faculty Articles and Research
The restitution of Jewish property in the multiethnic region of Northern Transylvania faced numerous challenges during the first post-Holocaust years as a result of the complicated wartime history, postwar demographics, legal status, interethnic dynamics, and occasional violence. Having the lowest rate of survival among all Jewish communities in Romania, most of the region’s Jews died during the deportation and did not return to their native places to claim their properties. This impacted the extent of restitution of individual private property. Some of the Aryanized property was restituted to the Jewish survivors or their heirs because the wartime beneficiaries fled the …
