Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 38. Alfred Russel Wallace's "Revolt Of Democracy": A Critical Analysis Of Early 20th Century Labor Theory And Its Contemporary Relevance, James Williams, Charles H. Smith Editor
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
This article examines Alfred Russel Wallace’s political treatise The Revolt of Democracy (1913), analyzing his theoretical framework for addressing labor unrest and economic inequality in early 20th-century Britain. Wallace's work presents a comprehensive critique of competitive capitalism and proposes systematic government intervention to address structural poverty. Through close textual analysis and comparison with contemporary UK labor conditions, this study evaluates the enduring relevance of Wallace's economic theories and policy prescriptions. The analysis reveals significant continuities between early 20th-century and contemporary debates about living wages, government employment standards, and wealth redistribution, while highlighting both the prescience and limitations of Wallace’s analytical …

Abolitionism And The Struggle Against Slavery In Livingston County, Justin Behrend Ph.D.
History
This article examines the abolitionist movement in Livingston County, New York, through the records of the Livingston County Anti-Slavery Society. It shows how this region in Western New York transformed from one where slavery was tolerated to one where people fought against slavery during the Civil War. Activists between 1837 and 1839 organized meetings to spread abolitionism and to push the United States to abolish slavery.
From Altamont To Astroworld: An Analysis Of Management Issues In Large Scale Music Festivals, Jennifer Morriss
From Altamont To Astroworld: An Analysis Of Management Issues In Large Scale Music Festivals, Jennifer Morriss
Honors College Theses
The most common problems in music festivals can largely be broken into two categories: risks to the individual and risks on a grand scale. It is the responsibility of event managers to consider how to best keep everyone safe and maintain proper organization. Risks to the individual are often things like substance use and abuse, harm reduction, and sexual assault or harassment. Meanwhile, broad risks tend to be issues of evacuation and emergency management, crowd safety, stampedes, and casualties or violence. It is crucial to reflect on prior common safety and security issues when setting out to produce a large …

Holocaust Memorialization & Memory: Serbia’S Strange Remembrance Of The Shoah At Sajmište, Henry Gilson
Holocaust Memorialization & Memory: Serbia’S Strange Remembrance Of The Shoah At Sajmište, Henry Gilson
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
The changing landscape of Shoah memory in Serbia has largely gone unexamined. Using the Staro Sajmište concentration camp site and its in situ memorial as a focal point, this paper examines how Holocaust remembrance in Serbia has shifted across historical periods, often marked by erasure, marginalization, and historical revisionism. Official narratives frequently redirected attention away from the Jewish victims murdered at Staro Sajmište toward emphasizing Serbian suffering, particularly at the Ustaše-operated Jasenovac camp. Political pressures and the strategic use and placement of commemorative plaques facilitated this narrative shift. Only in response to international scrutiny and scandals has substantial progress been …
One Last Victory: The 1980 Moscow Olympics And The Ussr’S Final Golden Moment, Pablo Boluda
One Last Victory: The 1980 Moscow Olympics And The Ussr’S Final Golden Moment, Pablo Boluda
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
While much of the existing scholarship on the 1980 Moscow Olympics focuses on Jimmy Carter’s infamous boycott, a closer examination from the Soviet perspective reveals a distinctive moment in Cold War history. Set against escalating global tensions following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the Kremlin capitalized on the Games to project strength, unity, and international legitimacy. Although the Western boycott affected the Games, it created an opportunity for the USSR to showcase socialist athletic excellence and strengthen diplomatic ties with Non-Aligned nations, many of which resisted U.S. pressure to abstain. The Games were transformed into a carefully orchestrated ideological spectacle. …

Beyond The North Star: The Southward Flight Of Enslaved People To Mexico, Kayro Gonzalez
Beyond The North Star: The Southward Flight Of Enslaved People To Mexico, Kayro Gonzalez
Theses (2016-Present)
When most people think of the Underground Railroad, they often picture brave individuals escaping the slave-owning South, seeking safety in the northern United States or Canada. However, it's essential to recognize that the fight for freedom went far beyond those regions. In 1830, Mexico abolished slavery, leading many escapees from enslaved areas across the United States. With freedom just a few miles away, hundreds of American slaves established several secretive and advanced routes into Mexico’s northern states, settling in newly founded free black colonies like San Lorenzo de los Negros and El Nacimiento de los Negros, among others. Using data …
What’S In A Name? Re-Evaluating Early Medical Library Leaders In A Modern Context, Jennifer K. Lloyd
What’S In A Name? Re-Evaluating Early Medical Library Leaders In A Modern Context, Jennifer K. Lloyd
Library Faculty Publications
This paper will highlight two early medical librarians, Mary Louise Marshall (1893-1986) and William D. Postell, Sr (1908-1982) who were in our chapter’s region, although during their careers, SCC did not exist. While we cannot expect that historical figures have the same knowledge and values as our contemporary colleagues, we can evaluate their writings to see what internal biases were present.
Critically reappraising the work of our predecessors can be a difficult task, especially if these individuals were held in high esteem, won national awards and published important papers about medical librarianship. However, as theories are repudiated, re-evaluation is key. …
The Battle Of Moscow 1941, Allen Mcquade
The Battle Of Moscow 1941, Allen Mcquade
Journal of the Symposium of University Research and Creative Expression
Project Mentor(s): Melissa Jordine, PhD
The German Army was diminished after the string of unbroken victories at the start of Operation Barbarossa. The loss of men and machines had become undeniable, and it sapped the offensive strength of their order of battle. The supply lines were at a breaking point and the underdeveloped road and rail system in Russia further exacerbated the problem. The diversion of strength to encircle and capture Kiev cost the Germans precious time before they could restart the offensive. The weather hindered the movement of men and machines and despite the protests of the commanding generals …

Elite Southern Views On Chinese Labor From Reconstruction To Exclusion, Spencer Livengood
Elite Southern Views On Chinese Labor From Reconstruction To Exclusion, Spencer Livengood
The Ozark Historical Review
This paper discusses the shift in Southern attitudes toward Chinese immigrants during the period between the Civil War and the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Immediately following the war, those attitudes were generally positive; however, once Reconstruction state governments were overthrown, the South’s political class rapidly aligned itself with western anti-Chinese voices in the papers and in Congress.
The Varied Response Of Cherokees To Land Allotment, Jacob Cummings
The Varied Response Of Cherokees To Land Allotment, Jacob Cummings
The Ozark Historical Review
This paper analyzes Cherokee opposition to allotment, a United States policy, expressed in the 1887 Dawes Act and other U.S. legislation and executive orders, that coerced tribal nations to break their communally held lands into private holdings, or allotments. This paper argues that the shifting beliefs, political views, and grassroots movements surrounding allotment, and its closely related issues, were both based in and influenced by personal and political interests, as well as from traditional, collective Cherokee values and spirituality.

Here We Rio Again: The 2016 Olympic Games And The Reproduction Of Spatial Struggles By Mega-Events In Rio De Janeiro, Jorge A. Morales
Chronos
This paper analyzes the unequal nature of urban development projects associated with international megaevents in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, through the lenses of race and social class. By doing this, I seek to demonstrate how spatial struggles associated with such urban development projects are part of a longstanding pattern of socio-cultural conflict between the Brazilian elite and the urban poor. This paper specifically examines the spatial struggles embodied by the destruction of Morro do Castelo during the early 1920s, and the removal of favelas, including Vila Autódromo, between 2009 and 2016. This research is based on information from primary documents …

Women And Religion In The Mongol Empire, Karlie Barnett
Women And Religion In The Mongol Empire, Karlie Barnett
The Ozark Historical Review
This article contributes toward the effort to uncover the impact of women on the making of the Mongol Empire in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It also considers how women among the Mongols interacted with religion in varied and distinct ways and how these relationships influenced the development of Eurasian religions and the Mongol Empire overall. These interactions, which took place in the personal realm, the political realm, and in the realm of patronage, had profound effects on the development of Eurasian religions and the Mongol Empire.
