A Town Of Their Own Making: Garrett Grove And Other Arkansas Freedom Settlements, Donna Shelton

This study is an examination of Black power movements through townbuilding in post-emancipation Arkansas delving into the perspectives of African American farmer-owners, business operators, educators, and community leaders who survived on the other side of slavery. Despite failed promises from so-called allies, or perhaps because of them and other societal betrayals, freedpeople carved out a place in the American landscape to establish All-Black communities and towns popularly known as “Black Towns” or “Freedmen Towns.” In contrast to most studies of Black towns, this study is situated in the South, specifically in Arkansas, to examine the more than three dozen freedom …

Colonial Whaling In Walvis Bay And In Southern Africa: Environmental Exploitation And Legacy Of South Africa’S Cetaceans, Jake L. Zarak

This paper examines the colonial whaling industry in Southern Africa, with a focus on Walvis Bay, tracing its long term environmental and socio-economic impacts. From the 1700s to the 1900s, whaling operations, primarily led by American, British, and French enterprises, exploited the region’s rich populations of sperm and right whales, drastically reducing their numbers. The study contextualizes whaling within a broader colonial framework, analyzing its effects on whale migratory patterns, indigenous communities, and marine ecosystems. It explores as well, the transition from whaling as an economic endeavor to modern conservation efforts and the romanticization of whales in literature and art. …

“This Would Certainly Happen Unless We Killed Every White Man”: The Tsilhqot’In’S War Of Survival, Samuel W. Louwagie

In 1864, several Tsilhqot’in (also spelled as “Chilcotin” or “Chilcoaten”) killed workers building a road across their territory in modern-day British Columbia. Six of the Tsilhqot’in, including their war chief, Lhatŝ’aŝʔin (also spelled as “Klatsassin”), were subsequently executed by the British colonial government. Since the Tsilhqot’in were initially assisting the road crew, this paper addresses the question of what caused the so-called “Chilcotin War” to begin.

Russia’S Cultural Thermometer: Imperial Balls At The Turn Of The 20th Century, Milo A. Clarkson

This work presents a novel perspective of Russian galas and their role in constructing an authentically Russian imperial culture in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. During this time, imperial balls functioned as both displays of soft power and represented a testing ground for the re-introduction of “authentic” Russian culture. After the modernizing wave of the Petrine revolution and long nineteenth-century intellectual debates between Westernizers and Slavophiles, Russia was deeply entrenched in Euro-centric dress, culture, and etiquette. This work proposes that turn-of-the-20th-century balls represented a reconfiguring of “Russianness” and displayed the aristocracy's internalized struggles for national identity. These articulations …
