Petrarch's "Trionfo Dell'eternità": Aesthetics Of Conversion, John S. Smurthwaite Jan 1987

Petrarch's "Trionfo Dell'eternità": Aesthetics Of Conversion, John S. Smurthwaite

Quidditas

As the first of Petrarch's six Triumphs, the "Trionfo del Tempo," comes to an end, the poet affirms time's apparent victory over all things in the sublunar world. Not even fame is able to endure time's unrelenting and ultimately disintegrating onslought:

che è questo però che sì s'apprezza?

Tutto vince e ritoglie il Tempo avaro;

chiamasi Fama, ed è morir secondo,

ne più che contra 'l primo è alcun riparo;

così il Tempo trionfa i nomi e 'l mondo!

("Trionfo del Tempo," vvs. 141-45_

What is this that is so highly valued? Greedy Time overcomes and steals all away. …

The Wilton Diptych And The Absolutism Of Richard Ii, Sumner Ferris Jan 1987

The Wilton Diptych And The Absolutism Of Richard Ii, Sumner Ferris

Quidditas

The Wilton Diptych (in The National Gallery, London) may now, after some years of hesitation on the matter, be considered to be very probably the work of an English artist. Consequently, we may take the painting to be not simply a masterpiece of the International Style but a specifically English masterpiece of the age of Richard II, the kind whom it chiefly honors and depicts, and we may expect to find in it a specifically English meaning.

Shakespeare's Henry V And The Alexandrian Allusion, Winona Howe Jun 1986

Shakespeare's Henry V And The Alexandrian Allusion, Winona Howe

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The character of Henry V (in Shakespeare's play of the same name) has been a matter of debate among critics, some of whom accept the historical view of Henry as an extraordinarily able and heroic king, while others view him as an extremely unattractive personality, a spiritual hypocrite, and a conqueror of unmitigated cruelty. Cited as supporting evidence for this unflattering portrait is a passage in Act IV which consists of a conversation between two characters, Gower and Fluellen. In this conversation, Henry is compared to Alexander the Great or "the Pig" as Fluellen terms him.

Two critics, Ronald Berman …

William Walker In Nicaragua: A Critical Review In Light Of Dependency Literature, Patrick N. Sweeney Jun 1986

William Walker In Nicaragua: A Critical Review In Light Of Dependency Literature, Patrick N. Sweeney

Graduate Thesis Collection

William Walker's expedition should be a fertile source of examples of such incipient dependency. This is because that expedition was grounded in the political desires of Manifest Destiny and the pragmatic economics of a cross-isthmus connection between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans during the crucial years just before the U.S. Civil war. Walker's actions caused a war in Central America, brought the United States and England to the brink of war, effected a significant economic relationship, and influenced diplomatic relations between Nicaragua and the U.S. for years afterward. Because of these various actions and reactions, this episode in inter-American relations …

Fort Brown--From Reveille To Taps, Jennie Gannon Wittenbach Apr 1986

Fort Brown--From Reveille To Taps, Jennie Gannon Wittenbach

Lower Rio Grande Valley Curated Material

The narrative examines the fort’s physical development—particularly the major reconstruction under Colonel William Wainwright after the Civil War—its architecture (including the post hospital, Officers’ Row, and parade ground), and the daily rhythms of military life. It highlights recreational activities such as polo matches, horse shows, parades, and band concerts, as well as the close relationship between the garrison and the Brownsville community. A notable episode is Dr. William Gorgas’s pioneering yellow fever research at the post hospital in the early 1880s, which identified the mosquito vector and contributed to major advances in tropical medicine.

Drawing on archival sources, contemporary accounts, …

The Fleet Landing Exercises And The Development Of Modern American Amphibious Doctrine, W. Howard Meissel Jr. Apr 1986

The Fleet Landing Exercises And The Development Of Modern American Amphibious Doctrine, W. Howard Meissel Jr.

History Theses & Dissertations

The Fleet Landing Exercises conducted by the United States Marine Corps in conjunction with the Navy and Army were some of the most significant military exercises conducted in American history. This thesis analyzes the seven exercises conducted between 1935 and 1941 to see how field testing affected amphibious doctrine, organization, and equipment development. This study summarizes the successes and failures of each exercise in regard to the evolution of a strong tactical doctrine, the training of a cadre of officers and men, and the development of the equipment vital to perform the amphibious mission. Primary information is largely drawn from …

The Remarkable John Bigelow, Jr.: An Examination Of Professionalism In The United States Army, 1877-91, Howard K. Hansen Jr.

History Theses & Dissertations

This thesis describes the military career of John Bigelow, Jr. , with emphasis on the professional development of United States Army officers. It questions the role Bigelow played in the formation of army professionalism, a sense of corporate responsibility to exercise military expertise correctly. A focus on Bigelow to delineate professionalism in the army provides a fresh perspective of a pivotal period in American military history in the aftermath of the Civil War and before the United States started to build a colonial empire. Bigelow articulated a comprehensive concept of total^ar as he perceived its development in the United States. …

Chronologies have a very special place in written history--they present a sequential record or chronicle of events, without attempting to interpret their significance. They are an important reference tool for historians providing the correlation and give meaning to the events that have taken place in any given period of history. This is the seventh in a series of Chronologies pertaining to major events concerning the Ogden Air Logistics Center and its predecessors. A convenience summary for interested readers and researchers, it was extracted to some degree from the annual official Ogden ALC Histories which are classified. This unclassified publication will …

Lynchings In The Bible Belt South: A Study Of Mobs And Ministers, Margaret S. Jackson Nov 1985

Lynchings In The Bible Belt South: A Study Of Mobs And Ministers, Margaret S. Jackson

Honors Theses

String him up! That command stirred a deadly chill in the hearts of hundreds of lynching victims and aroused violent emotion in the souls of countless bloodthirsty mobs throughout the Bible Belt South during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The South had su survived the Civil War physically, but the wound to its pride was so deep that more than Reconstruction was needed to heal the scar. The South had fought the North to preserve its unique way of life. Following the war Southerners fought each other in frustration and anger to protect their last hold on the …
