The Real Utah War: The Mountaineer's Efforts To Combat The Valley Tan, Robert E. Fleming Jan 1996

The Real Utah War: The Mountaineer's Efforts To Combat The Valley Tan, Robert E. Fleming

Theses and Dissertations

The Utah War and its aftermath changed Utah and the Mormons forever. This change came because of the growing Gentile influence in the territory and was reflected most adequately in the current periodicals of the period. The Valley Tan and the Mountaineer are especially important because their opposition to one another brought many important issues to the forefront of discussion. These issues would be important to the Mormons learning to live and work with those not of their faith and to share in their Zion.

These newspapers were successful in giving to its reader, both past and present, a glimpse …

Brick Versus Earth: The Construction And Destruction Of Confederate Seacoast Forts Pulaski And Mcallister, Georgia, David P. Eldridge

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The United States government created America's third coastal defense system during the early-to-mid nineteenth century based upon the recommendations of the Board of Engineers of 1816. The engineers of 1816 believed the most economical means of protecting America was the construction of large, permanent forts along key areas of America's coast.

Union forces under Brigadier General Quincy Gillmore seized Fort Pulaski in April of 1862. Pulaski was one of the most formidable forts built under the third system. Gillmore required two months to install the weapons used against Pulaski; most of the time was spent installing smoothbore Columbiads, the standard …

The Concepts Of Paoying And Karma: An Example Of Syncretism, Alexander S. Levy Dec 1995

The Concepts Of Paoying And Karma: An Example Of Syncretism, Alexander S. Levy

Masters Theses

This thesis will trace the evolution and modification of the Chinese concept of retribution, or paoying, with the Buddhist concept of karma through three periods of Chinese history: (1) the indigenous phase which comprises the time until Buddhism was introduced to China, (2) the period in which Buddhism was introduced to China and its immediate aftermath, and (3) the post-Buddhist phase in which there was a conscious effort to equate Chinese concepts with non-Chinese concepts, culminating in something that was not singularly Chinese nor wholly Buddhist To illustrate the concepts of retribution I will draw upon folk, or popular literature, …

An Historical Critique Of The Emergence And Evolution Of Ernesto Che Guevara's Foco Theory, Matt D. Childs Oct 1995

An Historical Critique Of The Emergence And Evolution Of Ernesto Che Guevara's Foco Theory, Matt D. Childs

Faculty Publications

This article provides an analysis of Ernesto Che Guevara's theory of guerrilla warfare, the foco. The numerous changes to the originalfoco thesis, as presented in Guerrilla Warfare (1960), are examined in detail covering two dozen articles, speeches, essays, interviews and books authored by Guevara, Castro and Debray while stressing their relation to national and international politics. The author argues that there was an apparent discourse between Cuban politics and the numerous changes in Guevara's writings. Juxtaposing changes to the foco theory from 1960 to 1967, to Cuban historical events, reflects the political expedience of the 196os and the primary …

From Visiting Scholar To Immigrant: A Memoir, Gustav T. Durrer

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In younger years, with youthful optimism, one tends to project the future on a fairly straight line. Life usually alters that course. Circumstances change, and we change with them. Events in and around us shape our destiny. Roadblocks and crossroads force us to choose an unplanned route. 1939-45 was such a time when many lives were drastically changed, due to the dramatic developments in Europe and the Far East. These events were to alter the course of my life also.

Napoleonic Propaganda: Rationalization For War And Control Of An Empire, Jason S. Abate May 1995

Napoleonic Propaganda: Rationalization For War And Control Of An Empire, Jason S. Abate

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

This paper describes the way Napoleon Bonaparte used propaganda to influence nations to fight the enemies of nineteenth century France and to control the peoples of Europe. Although Napoleon never used the specific term "propaganda" he utilized its methods in order to sway the masses into following him. Under the leadership of Napoleon, France rose from the chaos of revolution to dominate Europe. The armies of France and its allies crushed all opposition militarily, but the political battle for the minds of the people was waged for and by Napoleon.

Agitators In The Land Of Zion: The Anti-Vietnam War Movements At Brigham Young University, University Of Utah, And Utah State University, Tracey Smith

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Through the vantage point of institutions of higher learning, Utah's distinction as a politically conservative state dominated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is examined during the Vietnam War era. The three universities in the study-Brigham Young University, University of Utah, and Utah State University- are the three oldest and most populous universities in the state. This thesis concentrates on these three institutions and less on the politics of the state at the time. Studies showed that the universities, to varying degrees, exhibited antiwar sentiment. Still, the campuses were less active in opposing the war, drawing only …

The Role Of Supeman In American Culture: 1938 To 1955, Elayne Wehrly '95

Honors Projects, History

In Superman's dualistic world, chaos and human suffering are the result of individual criminals who violate established rules of authority, rogue nations seeking to conquer the world and impose "undemocratic" principles on its citizenry, or corrupt political or business leaders lured from good by the base instincts of greed and lust for power. For Americans the black and white comic book fantasies provided escape from an increasingly complex reality and encouraged a simplistic view of cataclysmic changes both in American society and the world at large. Within this dualistic context, Superman is presented as a redemptive figure: the hero who …

Out Of The Air: The Role Of Communications Intelligence In The Strategic Bombing Campaign Against The German Oil Industry And Transportation System In World War Ii, Darrell Nolen Apr 1995

Out Of The Air: The Role Of Communications Intelligence In The Strategic Bombing Campaign Against The German Oil Industry And Transportation System In World War Ii, Darrell Nolen

History Theses & Dissertations

During World War II communications intelligence (ULTRA) was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the Allied strategic bombing campaign against the German oil industry and transportation system. In the case of the oil campaign communications intelligence provided confirmation of serious damage inflicted on the German war economy. This conformed nicely to the prewar American doctrine of precision daylight bombardment of critical nodes of an enemy industrial system. The intention of this policy was to cause the collapse of the enemy's military capability. The campaign against the German transportation system did not fit into this doctrinal framework as precisely; consequently, it …
