Warrior-Club Traditions In Medieval Switzerland, Arnold H. Price Jun 1998

Warrior-Club Traditions In Medieval Switzerland, Arnold H. Price

Swiss American Historical Society Review

This article endeavors to serve as an extension (as well as a confirmation) of my research on the role of warrior clubs during the era of migrations, the so-called Völkerwanderung. In regard to the Völkerwanderung terminology I am relying in this study primarily on the ground-breaking work of the late Hans Georg Wackemagel, whose novel anthropological approach unearthed and analyzed a substantial body of pagan traditions surviving in medieval Helvetia.

The Embodiment Of Responsibility: “Confession” And “Compensation” In Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea, Andrew Strathern, Pamela J. Stewart Jun 1998

The Embodiment Of Responsibility: “Confession” And “Compensation” In Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea, Andrew Strathern, Pamela J. Stewart

Pacific Studies

We discuss two contexts of responsibility for action in Mount Hagen, confession and compensation. Verbal confessions of either wrongdoing or resentment against wrongdoing are important signs of the exercise of agency, but if they are not made, it is expected that sickness will result. “Substance” thus takes over where “agency” fails, and the two are intimately linked. Compensation payments can be seen as nonverbal equivalents of confession or the logical result of it, and if they are not paid, sickness or a failure of wounds to heal is thought to be likely as a result. In contemporary times both confession …

Keep The Flyin' Eight Balls Rollin': Military Leadership In The 3360th Quartermaster Truck Company, Grant T. Weller May 1998

Keep The Flyin' Eight Balls Rollin': Military Leadership In The 3360th Quartermaster Truck Company, Grant T. Weller

Theses and Dissertations

The 3360th Quartermaster Truck Company, originally Company D of the 2639th Quartermaster Truck Battalion, was created in 1942 by drawing troops and officers from anti-aircraft units stationed in North Africa, to meet an emergency need for highway transportation to support the Allied advance East across North Africa. The reassigned troops and officers received no training in their new duties, but were instead immediately dispatched to the front with vital supplies. The company continued operations through North Africa, and on into Sicily and Italy. While in Italy, Elmer H. Puchta, previously assigned to the company as a platoon commander, took command. …

Adams County In "The Splendid Little War," April Through August 1898, Timothy H. Smith

Adams County History

The Spanish American War lasted less than four months (April 25 to August 13, 1898). For the entire war, American casualties totaled less than 2,000 men, among them 345 killed or mortally wounded. Many more, however, died of disease (about 2000). Over the years, the war has been remembered as an event in which American interests and yellow journalism led to a conflict where the outcome was never in doubt. The nation of Spain, embroiled in internal dispute and civil unrest, was ripe for the picking and could do little to organize a defense of her colonies against a nation …

Elijah Parish Lovejoy The Man And The Myth, Scott Shirey Jan 1998

Elijah Parish Lovejoy The Man And The Myth, Scott Shirey

Senior Scholar Papers

The nation saw Lovejoy as representative of republican ideals; virtue. temperance. liberty, and self-sacrifice. Lovejoy had sacrificed his life for the Republic in defense of democratic values. Lovejoy was also a man who feared absolute power. It led him to despise Catholicism (under its Papal authority), fear immigration, and eventually despise the slaveholder. American's saw Lovejoy's stance against the mob as a truly republican act The Reverend Edward Beecher, President of Illinois College and close friend of Lovejoy, immediately recognized the significance of Lovejoy's death.

Not With A Bang, But A Whimper: The End Of The Archaic In Northeast Texas, Maynard B. Cliff Jan 1998

Not With A Bang, But A Whimper: The End Of The Archaic In Northeast Texas, Maynard B. Cliff

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The Archaic period in Northeast Texas lasted for thousands of years and, if this length of time can be taken as any indication, it was as an extremely successful adaptation to the Holocene environment of North America. Accepting this view, however, begs the question: "why and how did the Archaic period come to an end?"

This paper uses the term "Archaic" to describe a "way of life" (see Story 1990:211), and in this sense, the Archaic period in eastern North America may be seen as a "tradition," characterized by small, band-level societies, marked by an economy based on "hunting, fishing, …

An Archaeological Investigation Of Comanche Lookout Park, Northeast Bexar County, Texas, David L. Nickels

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

During the week of September 22 through 26, 1997, staff archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) of The Unviersity of Texas at San Antonio conducted a 100-percent-pedestrian survey and limited shovel testing at Comanche Lookout Park in northeastern Bexar County, Texas (Figure 1). The archaeological investigation was conducted at the request of the city of San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department as part of an overall development plan for the 96-acre parcel (Figure 2). The purpose of the survey was to identify archaeological sites visible on the surface as well as areas where sites are potentially buried. CAR …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In February 1997, the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) of The University of Texas at San Antonio was contracted by the San Antonio Water Systems (SAWS) to conduct an intensive archaeological survey and geomorphological study along a proposed 5 .5-km water main right-of-way, from the junction of ill -3 7 and Loop 1604 to the San Antonio River in southeast Bexar County. Upon completion of a 1 DO-percent pedestrian survey, 10 backhoe trenches, and 152 shovel tests, CAR concluded that no significant cultural remains would be impacted by excavations for the proposed water main, and recommends that no further archaeological …

Henry Norris And The Boleyn Faction: 1528-1536, Jeff Lavender

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This work details primarily the last nine years of the life of Henry Norris, a British court figure during the reign of Henry VIII. His career in Tudor England developed from and through his role in the Privy Chamber, which was a department of court operating in the king’s private suite of rooms. Norris was the most prestigious of the chamber groomsmen who took care of the king’s daily needs and personal care. As chief groomsman or Groom of the Stool, Norris also played a significant part in the distribution of offices through patronage and through his influence with the …

Quidditas

Whilst vitall sapp did make me spring,

And leafe and bough did flourish brave,

I then was dumbe and could not sing,

Ne had the voice which now I have:

But when the axe my life did end,

The Muses nine this voice did send.

Worrying About The Civil War, Edward L. Ayers Jan 1998

Worrying About The Civil War, Edward L. Ayers

History Faculty Publications

There is no animosity in any of these historical or practical interpretations of the Civil War. It is clear that the North fought for purposes entirely good--for Union and the end of slavery--but Confederate soldiers also win respect for their bravery, their devotion, and their struggle against long odds. They seem to have been playing historical roles for which they are not to blame. The reenactors, the books in stores, and the battlefield tours generally avoid talking about the cause of the war, focusing instead on the common bravery and hardships of soldiers North and South.

Rizal’S Morga And Views Of Philippine History, Ambeth R. Ocampo

History Department Faculty Publications

Antonio de Morga, lieutenant governor of the Philippines in the late sixteenth century, described the food of the indios as follows: Their daily fare is composed of: lice crushed in wooden pillars and when cooked is called morisqueta (this is the staple throughout the land); cooked fish which they have in abundance; pork, venison, mountain buffaloes which they call carabaos, beef and fish which they know is best when it has started to mt and stink (Retana 1909,174). Reading this text in the British Museum 280 years later, Rizal was so incensed that he later responded in print with: This …

Experiences in North America, the West Indies and Europe that bear relevance will be examined along with those individuals whose experience or works influenced the creation of the 95th. The second chapter investigates the organization and new discipline of the Experimental Rifle Corps, its drafting into the line as the 95th, Sir John Moore's camp at Shorncliffe and …

Woodrow Wilson, Colonel House, And American Policy Toward Germany, 1914-1918, Joseph W. Winn

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In the eighty-one-years since the United States entered World War I, the question of whether President Woodrow Wilson formulated a coherent and rational policy to defeat Germany has continued to be one of the central conundrums of his presidency. Relying on primary sources, especially the voluminous Papers of Woodrow Wilson, this thesis examines Wilson's failure to reconcile his liberal war aims toward Germany with America's entry into the war. The evolving nature of the partnership between Wilson and his key advisor, Colonel Edwin M. House, will also be studied in light of the key role it played in the formulation …
