Henri Iv As Military Commander, Terence W. Loveridge Jul 1999

Henri Iv As Military Commander, Terence W. Loveridge

History Theses & Dissertations

Henri IV won the throne of France as a feat of arms in a time of great social, religious, economic and military transformation. Militarily, Henri has generally been regarded as a gallant, opportunistic and lucky cavalry commander whose remarkable sense of timing and flexible personal principles enabled him to play a major role in the ending of the Wars of Religion in France. Current debate over the "Military Revolution" of the sixteenth century and the "Revolution in Military Affairs" of the twentieth has renewed interest in both the characters and the techniques of warfare in transformation.

New approaches to military …

Japan's War Memories: A Political Approach, Miyuki Sakuta Jun 1999

Japan's War Memories: A Political Approach, Miyuki Sakuta

Dissertations and Theses

In discussion of Japan's role in the world, scholars and politicians have often pointed out the significance of Japan's war memories. Japan is considered an anomalous actor because of its status as an economic superpower without military or political weight. Memories of World War II have been defined as a constraining factor in Japan's attempts to assume a greater role in international affairs.

The purpose of the present study is to analyze the origins and the functions of the memory factor. While common explanations have been either psychological or cultural, I took a political approach, adopting the Realists' theory that …

Changing Contours Of Kinship: The Impacts Of Social And Economic Development On Kinship Organization In The South Pacific, Cluny Macpherson Jun 1999

Changing Contours Of Kinship: The Impacts Of Social And Economic Development On Kinship Organization In The South Pacific, Cluny Macpherson

Pacific Studies

The incorporation of microstates into the capitalist world-system sets the stage for profound transformations of kinship organization. This article argues that, while ideologies of kinship may remain largely intact, the actual organization of kinship is changing. It explores the roles of social, demographic, political, and economic factors in the transformation of the structure of kinship and family in the South Pacific in the period since continuous contact with the West commenced some 170 years ago. The case of Western Samoa is offered as an example of the process of change that is occurring at varying rates throughout Pacific Island societies.

Abraham Lincoln: Strategist Of Union Victory, Rolando Avila May 1999

Abraham Lincoln: Strategist Of Union Victory, Rolando Avila

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Military strategy can be divided into two major categories. First, national strategy which shapes and defines a nation's political goals. Second, operational strategy which is the instrument for achieving those goals. Most studies of Abraham Lincoln's military strategy during the American Civil War are too narrow in focus, because they mainly look at operational strategy. But operational strategy can not be truly understood or judged unless there is a firm understanding of national strategy, for which operational strategy is a mere tool. As a national strategist, Lincoln was largely responsible for Union victory.

The Genesis Of European Nationalism, Linda J. Thayne May 1999

The Genesis Of European Nationalism, Linda J. Thayne

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In the aftermath of the second world war to ravage Europe in a single generation, there emerged a conviction among many of the economic, political and social leaders of the most powerful nation-states of Europe and the United States that an equitable resolution to Europe's long standing national suspicions, hatreds and rivalries was crucial to prevent further warfare. For these Europeanists the means for effecting long-term peace and prosperity in Europe was the formation of an integrated European regime. Europeanists believed that the key to achieving this goal rested in their ability to intertwine the national interests of Europe's nation-states …

The Nixon Environmental Agenda: An Insider's View Of Republican Decision-Making, 1968-1973, David D. Dominick

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Richard Nixon, the president, has been given little historical credit for the environmental accomplishments of his administration. Indeed, in his post-presidency memoirs Nixon himself shows no interest in the environment and when he does speak to the issue, it is disparagingly.

But ironically, my thesis shows that no administration, before or since, has brought such progress to the multiple issues of environmental quality. The thesis explores the political, social, and historical factors that contributed to the "environmental revolution" of the late 60s and early 70s. The quality of the leaders chosen within the administration helps explain the dichotomy between a …

Listening To The Native Voice: Museums As A Medium In Correcting Native American Stereotypes, Shana Bushyhead '99

Honors Projects, History

When walking in the fields by his home, Henry David Thoreau would look for arrowheads to bring him closer to the life of the "red man." On a visit to a friend, Thoreau was shown a piece of pottery that had a bird's head carved in the handle. Thoreau was so moved by this example of ornamentation for the sake of beauty that he wrote in his journal, "It is affecting as a work of art by a people who have left so few traces of themselves, a step beyond the common arrowhead." He then begins to imagine the actual …

An Analysis Of The Success And Failure Of The Collection And Interpretation Of American Intelligence, 1942-1989, Alexander Michael Gibby

History Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate several types of American intelligence collectors. These collectors include human, airborne, shipborne, satellite, and signals. The time frame for this study will begin with the American involvement in the Second World War, commencing with Operation Torch in 1942, and end with the conclusion of the Cold War, marked by the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The case-study format of the paper allows the author to focus on several important areas of intelligence collection, rather than dividing analysis over a great array of topics. The significance of the thesis to contemporary …

Pacific Studies

On 13 and 14 September 1945, Kenneth P. Emory of the Bishop Museum investigated what he later termed “Herbert C. Shipman Cave,” twelve miles from Hilo in the northern Puna District of Hawai‘i Island. His typescript of this investigation is frequently cited, but the cave remained unidentified until recently. In 1996 a Hawaii Speleological Survey team located a signature of Emory in the upper part of Keala Cave, at the site of a 1945 newspaper fragment previously found by another Hawaii Speleological Survey team. Other pukas explored and described by Emory as part of “Herbert C. Shipman Cave” unmistakably are …

The Miraculous Island Of Switzerland In The Midst Of The Third Reich, H. Dwight Page

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In the film version of Hermann Wouk's War and Remembrance, the Polish Jewish professor Aaron Jastrow and his American Jewish niece Nathalie fall into the trap of the monstrous Nazi genocidal machine and are interned at Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia. Upon their arrival there, they are initially treated with brutality until Professor Jastrow reminds their Nazi captors, "We are under Swiss protection." Thereafter, they receive noticeably better treatment. Although Aaron Jastrow later perishes in a gas chamber at Auschwitz, Nathalie owes her own escape from the same camp and her eventual rescue by the Americans at Weimar, Germany in April, …

To Educate The Heathen: A Comparison Of The Treatment Of The Native Peoples Of The United States, Australia, Canada And New Zealand, Howard R. Nolen

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis focuses on the treatment of Native Americans in the United States, with comparisons being made with the treatment of the native peoples of Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The treatment of these four countries will not be equal in each chapter due in part to the resources available and because this work's core focus is on the United States. The period covered in the United States begins with white, or European colonization and continues until the period of Franklin Roosevelt's administration. I use the period of colonization as my starting point for each country because the colonization of …

“There Is Nothing More Divine Than These, Except Man”: Thomas Moffett And Insect Sociality, Monique Bourque Jan 1999

“There Is Nothing More Divine Than These, Except Man”: Thomas Moffett And Insect Sociality, Monique Bourque

Quidditas

When Thoomas Moffett wrote in the Theater of Insects that "there is nothing more divine than these, except Man," he asked his readers some pointed questions about insects, and made some blunt statements:

where is Nature more to be seen than in the smallest matters, where she is entirely all? for in great bodies the workmanship is easie, the matter being ductile; but in these that are so small and despicable, and almost nothing, what care? how great is the effect of it? how unspeakable is the perfection? ... Do you require Prudence? regard the Ant; Do you desire Justice? …

London's Air Defense During The First World War: The Scene From The Ground, Dale Edward Hatfield

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

As a result of the first flight across the English Channel in 1909, England faced a new threat to its national security. Despite this early warning she was quite unprepared to face the challenge presented by the German air services during the First World War. England’s air defense consisted of anti-aircraft guns on the ground and planes in the skies. Both of these methods of are defense, however, were lacking in quantity and quality during the early years of the war.

This thesis will trace the evolution of England’s air defense on the ground from the prewar years to the …
