A History Of Jonathan Alder: His Captivity And Life With The Indians, Henry Clay Alder, Larry Nelson Feb 2002

A History Of Jonathan Alder: His Captivity And Life With The Indians, Henry Clay Alder, Larry Nelson

University of Akron Press Publications

A History of Jonathan Alder: His Captivity and Life with the Indians is one of the most extensive first person accounts to survive from Ohio's pioneer and early settlement eras. Alder's reminiscence spans half a century, from his capture at the age of nine in 1782, when Ohio had no permanent European settlement and was still the exclusive domain of the Ohio Indian nations, to 1832, nearly a generation after the pioneer era had ended. The narrative provides a unique perspective on frontier Ohio and its transformation from wilderness to statehood. It illustrates the continuing evolution in the relationship between …

The Special Operations Executive (Soe) In Austria, 1940-1945, Gerald Steinacher Jan 2002

The Special Operations Executive (Soe) In Austria, 1940-1945, Gerald Steinacher

Department of History: Faculty Publications

In January 1941, Great Britain’s Special Operations Executive (SOE) defined its policy on Austria with two objectives: (1) to assist in the disintegration of the Third Reich by fostering the soon to be expected all-out revolutionary and separatist uprising in Austria; and (2) to bring about the “restoration of Austria as a national unit” within the framework of a central European federation. In short, the hopes and aspirations of the SOE in the Austrian resistance against Nazi Germany were flying high. Five years later, in March 1946, Britain’s political representative in Vienna, William B. Mack, summarized the history of the …

The Caddo, Edward R. Jelks, Timothy K. Perttula Jan 2002

The Caddo, Edward R. Jelks, Timothy K. Perttula

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Knowledge of early Caddo culture comes from both archaeological and ethnographic sources. Enough archaeological research had been completed by the early 1970s to provide a fairly thorough chronology for the major pre-Columbian developments in the Caddoan area. and archaeological research has been extensive since that time.

Accounts of the DeSoto expedition of 1541-1542 constitute the earliest source of ethnohistoric data on the Caddo. Translations of the De Soto documents may be found in Bourne, Robertson, Varner and Varner, and more recently, Clayton. Some scholars think it likely that Coronado reached the edge of Caddo territory in 1541, but the consensus …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Between 1998 and 1999, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted archaeological investigations at the Spanish Colonial-period Mission Nuestra Señora del Refugio, located in Refugio County, in southern Texas. This project was conducted under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 2025. The initial phase of the excavations concentrated along US 77, in the TxDOT right-of-way, and the subsequent work conducted led to the exhumation of 165 burials, the discovery of the location of the 1796 church and the associated mission compound features.

Camp Mabry Archaeological Survey And Testing, Travis County, Texas, Richard S. Jones, John J. Leffler

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In October 2001, the Center for Archaeological Studies (CAS) was contracted by the Adjutant General’s Department of the Texas Army National Guard (AGTX) to perform a 100% systematic archaeological survey on the grounds of Camp Mabry, in Austin. The project was comprised of a pedestrian survey, extensive shovel testing, and the excavation of two backhoe trenches. The survey resulted in the discovery of an 8 x 8-meter prehistoric site, 41TV1954. In addition, two previously recorded archaeological sites (41TV1667 and 41TV1722) were revisited, and shovel tests were excavated in order to reevaluate and document cultural resources and site boundaries. Based on …

Disaster At The Colorado, Charles W. Baley

All USU Press Publications

This is a good book, worthy to join a host of other western trails studies... The work, largely narrative, is based on many primary sources and, equally important, it is readable. The armchair explorer will be satisfied, and there is enough trail topography for 'ruts nuts' and 'in the dirt' students. It is apparent that the author followed much of the trail himself and presents a good sense of place, putting the reader in the picture. —Stanley B. Kimball, Western Historical Quarterly Across north-central New Mexico and Arizona, along the line of Route 66, now Interstate 40, there first ran …

Soviet History Reconsidered: The Reform Of Undergraduate History Teaching In Contemporary Russian Universities, Amy Hirschauer Jan 2002

Soviet History Reconsidered: The Reform Of Undergraduate History Teaching In Contemporary Russian Universities, Amy Hirschauer

Honors Theses

In my discussion, I will compare how the two universities have dealt with pressing social, financial and economic concerns. This will demonstrate not only the differences in how universities in Russia are dealing with these concerns, but also how a major university with a great deal of prestige in a large, cosmopolitan city can have much more trouble dealing with interpersonal political conflict than a smaller university in the interior, despite the fact that it receives substantially more financial support from the central government. This comparison provides a context for understanding the challenges present in teaching history, and shows how …

The Spanish Attempt To Tribalize The Darién, 1735-50, Ignacio Gallup-Diaz Jan 2002

The Spanish Attempt To Tribalize The Darién, 1735-50, Ignacio Gallup-Diaz

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

Spanish officials in eastern Panama believed that Christianized Indians would serve as surrogates for Spanish settlers or troops, and their attempts to administer the region were grounded upon establishing alliances with selected Indian leaders. At the same time, pirates and other intruders also saw the need for alliances with Indian men in order for their endeavors to succeed. Through a process in which Europeans and Indians played an equal part, the early modern period saw the creation of several new indigenous leaders. The chieftains who interacted with outsiders were forced to create new ways of ruling on the ground as …

Kitchener's Volunteers, Peter Brauer Jan 2002

Kitchener's Volunteers, Peter Brauer

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

The fourth of August 1914 was a day of jubilation throughout Britain. German armies, numbering in the millions, had overrun Belgian border stations the previous day and were advancing unchecked across the frontier. As the morning progressed, a buzz of enthusiasm began to grow. News placards throughout Britain broadcast the news of the German invasion to the eager public from every street corner. Those British in the big cities were first to hear. From London to Birmingham, Manchester to Cardiff, and Edinburgh to Belfast, people gathered to hear the news. By noon, Trafalgar Square was packed end to end with …

The American And South Vietnamese Pacification Efforts During The Vietnam War, Matthew Douglas Pinard

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis closely examines the American and South Vietnamese pacification efforts in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. The perspectives of the United States military and civilian organizations that supported the war effort, the South Vietnamese government, and the Viet Cong insurgents are discussed in detail. This includes an analysis of military strategy, theory, and practice of the combatants in the Vietnam War in order to gain an understanding of the reasoning behind decision-making policies of military leaders on both sides of the war. A dissection of the Viet Cong insurgency, from the origins of insurgent political movements leading to …

The Tardieu Moment: Andre Tardieus Failure As Prime Minister Of France, 1929-1930, Tim K. Fuchs

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis is concerned with André Tardieu, a French politician who had an outstanding career as a journalist and a politician. After the retirement of Prime Minister Raymond Poincaré in 1929, it seemed like Tardieu would be the natural choice as his successor. He was the only leader on the Right. Tardieu formed his first cabinet in November 1929 and proposed an ambitious program for public works projects to improve the country’s infrastructure. Despite solid funding, Tardieu’s proposal never passed the Chamber of Deputies and his ministry fell in December 1930. The purpose of this thesis is to find the …

Misguided By Experience: A Defense Of Custer's Actions At The Little Bighorn, Harold Douglas Baker Jan 2002

Misguided By Experience: A Defense Of Custer's Actions At The Little Bighorn, Harold Douglas Baker

LSU Master's Theses

At midday on June 25, 1876, Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer split his Seventh Cavalry Regiment into three elements and attacked an enormous village of hostile Indians situated along the Little Bighorn River in modern-day Montana. Custer and his immediate command of five troops, a total of 225 men, did not survive the fight. Immediately following the battle, officers-Reno, Benteen, Brisbin, Terry, Gibbon-began to recreate the history of the campaign's recent events in an effort to explain the disaster and clear themselves of responsibility. Their self-serving omission of facts and their convenient "remembrance" of things that had not happened fully …

The Strategic Bombing Campaign Against Germany During World War Ii, Julius Rigole Jan 2002

The Strategic Bombing Campaign Against Germany During World War Ii, Julius Rigole

LSU Master's Theses

Early attempts at strategic bombing led theorist to reason that it could offer a revolutionary new means of winning wars. Airpower visionaries such as Guilio Douhet, Hugh Trenchard, and Billy Mitchell advocated a Sherman - like strategy of attrition in which air strikes on the enemy’s vital economic centers would destroy his war – making capability and crush his will to resist. In the inner – war period the Air Corps Tactical School, occupied with formulating a strategic air doctrine, refined that idea, which was the central concept underlying AWPD-1, the basic statement governing strategic bombing elaborated by the Air …

The United States 1989 Military Intervention In Panama: A Just Cause?, William Harrision Huff Iv Jan 2002

The United States 1989 Military Intervention In Panama: A Just Cause?, William Harrision Huff Iv

LSU Master's Theses

American involvement in Panama dates back to 1903 when the United States helped bring independence to the Republic and soon after began construction of the Panama Canal. As the guarantor of Panamanian sovereignty, the U.S in the ensuing decades contributed to a non-democratic environment in Panama by supporting a series of dictators who promised stability in the region. The U.S. National Security policy just before Operation JUST CAUSE finally acknowledged the brutality of the Panamanian dictator, Manuel Noriega, forcing Washington to attempt numerous unsuccessful diplomatic maneuvers in an effort to avoid military intervention. Once combat operations commenced, the justification, necessity …

Constructing Womanhood In Public: Progressive White Women In A New South, Mary Jane Smith Jan 2002

Constructing Womanhood In Public: Progressive White Women In A New South, Mary Jane Smith

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

During the Progressive Era, southern white women were aggressively recruited by the leadership of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, the General Federation of Women's Clubs and the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Each believed the inclusion of southern white women vital to its success as a national association of American women; consequently, by the beginning of the twentieth century, southern white women had achieved positions of leadership in each organization. This dissertation analyzes, primarily through the public statements of the leaders of these groups, how these women defined themselves as women, as white, and as southern vis a vis their …

Collaboration Or Self-Preservation: The Military Code Of Conduct, Rodney Ray Lemay Jan 2002

Collaboration Or Self-Preservation: The Military Code Of Conduct, Rodney Ray Lemay

LSU Master's Theses

In 1955, Secretary of Defense Charles Wilson established a special committee to investigate allegations of misconduct by American POW’s during the Korean War. The Communists had used the prisoners for propaganda purposes and extended the battlefield into the POW camp as never before. The committee proposed the Code of Conduct as a means of preventing similar occurrences in future conflicts. The Code of Conduct puts into words, for the first time, concepts which had evolved from the experiences of American POW’s in the almost 200 years of combat preceding its development. Americans who became POW’s during conflicts after the implementation …

Legacy To The People: Community And The Orange County Regional History Center, Robert L. Beatty Ii

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The development and birth of the Orange County Regional History Center is perhaps unlike any other local history museum in the United States. Its story is worth telling because of its long gestation, the difficulties in bringing this center to life, and the goals of the people who made it possible. All of these elements are a vital part of the history of Orange County, Florida and should not be overlooked.

In this light, this thesis will discuss more fully three topics in relation to the creation of the new History Center. First, it will look at the American museum …

The Historical Debate Among Leaders Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints On The Topic Of The United Nations, Katie Marie Lenhard Jan 2002

The Historical Debate Among Leaders Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints On The Topic Of The United Nations, Katie Marie Lenhard

Theses and Dissertations

Since the inception of the United Nations in 1945, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have made public statements regarding the international peace and security organization. To the confusion of many Church members, who often look to their leaders for prophetic guidance on numerous spiritual and temporal topics, these statements have been conflicting. Some Church leaders have clearly opposed the United Nations and others have openly supported it, offering various ideological explanations for their beliefs. Yet, it is evident that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has never made an official position on the …
