Victory's Foundation: Us Logistical Support Of The Allied Mediterranean Campaign, 1942-1945, David D. Dworak
Victory's Foundation: Us Logistical Support Of The Allied Mediterranean Campaign, 1942-1945, David D. Dworak
History - Dissertations
From November 1942 until May 1945, the Allied nations fought a series of campaigns across the Mediterranean. Ever since, historians have debated the role and impact of the Mediterranean theater upon the greater war in Europe. Through analysis of official archival documents, unit histories from the period, and personal memoirs, this dissertation investigates the impact of US Army service forces on each of the campaigns and operations conducted across the Mediterranean theater. Additionally, this study examines how the campaigns of the Mediterranean shaped and informed the 1944 landings in France and the subsequent drive into Germany. This dissertation argues that …

In December 1784, a small contingent of upper Tennessee Valley political leaders met in Washington County, North Carolina's rustic courthouse to discuss the uncertain postrevolutionary political climate that they believed threatened their regional political hegemony, prosperity and families. The Jonesboro delegates fatefully decided that their backcountry communities could no longer remain part of their parent state and that North Carolina's westernmost counties (at the time Washington, Sullivan and Greene counties) must unite and form America's fourteenth state.

Lisa Blas: Meet Me At The Mason Dixon, Shannon Egan, Miguel De Baca
Schmucker Art Catalogs
The Schmucker Art Gallery at Gettysburg College is extremely pleased to mount the remarkable series of paintings, photographs, and mixed-media installation by contemporary artist Lisa Blas entitled Meet Me at the Mason Dixon. This exhibition is an official part of Gettysburg area’s 150th Commemoration of the American Civil War as well as Gettysburg College’s Kick-Off event for this significant anniversary. Gettysburg provides an especially appropriate backdrop for the exhibition, as the artist took the history of this “hallowed ground” and its current resonances as the subject of her work. Blas traveled the Gettysburg National Military Park, as well as to …

"100 Spears Worth 100 Pieces": The Impact Of Ashigaru On Sengoku Jidai, Austin W. Clark
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
In the year 1545, during the latter half of Japan‘s Sengoku Period or ―Age of Warring States‖, the minor samurai Ukida Naoie was assigned thirty men and a small fief in the province of Bizen. His task was to cultivate and defend this small corner of the province from the ambitious and power-hungry lords and bandits that abounded in the Sengoku Period, but Naoie set his sights higher. Given direct control over his thirty men, a mere garrison force of infantry, he used them to conquer and rule over neighboring fiefs in the province. His reputation and his army grew …
Sahib And Sepoy : The British Perspective On The Sepoy Rebellion Of 1857, Harley Derek Walden
Sahib And Sepoy : The British Perspective On The Sepoy Rebellion Of 1857, Harley Derek Walden
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The Sepoy Rebellion of 1857 was a truly significant event in the annals of British history and imperial study as well. The recent historiography on the British perspective of the event neglects to consider the positive Anglo-Indian perspective, dismissing it as a dissident or non-existent sentiment. However, through analyzing the British Parliamentary debates, military memoir, and Victorian literature, a more dynamic picture emerges of mid-Victorian Britain. Britons from varying social classes felt sympathy and admiration for their Indian counterparts, even in lieu of the Sepoy Rebellion in 1857. They differentiated between loyal Indian soldiers and the rebels that threatened to …

"The Universal Alliance Of All Peoples": Romantic Socialists, The Human Family, And The Defense Of Empire During The July Monarchy, 1830-1848, Naomi J. Andrews
History
This article documents the procolonial rhetoric among romantic socialists in France during the July Monarchy (1830-48), demonstrating its pervasiveness. It argues that these years must be highlighted as key to the transition from eighteenth-century universalist ideas of humanity toward taxonomies of national, racial, and sexual difference that underpinned the rationale of empire in the second half of the nineteenth century. It explores the views on colonialism espoused by socialists such as Etienne Cabet, Pierre Leroux, Constantin Pecqueur, and Jean Reynaud; situates them in the broad socialist consensus on empire; and demonstrates the relationship between these men's socialism and their colonialism. …
Book Review: Mao Zedong And China In The Twentieth-Century World, Jeremy Tai
Book Review: Mao Zedong And China In The Twentieth-Century World, Jeremy Tai
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Mao Zedong may no longer be the sublime object of desire in China, but in recent decades his image has been continuously invoked and consumed in countless guises – both familiar and new – ranging from pop art portraits to the ubiquitous face of Chinese banknotes, from Cultural Revolution kitsch to the ObaMao souvenirs currently found in tourist traps around China. The reproduction of Mao in his various postmodern manifestations suggests a loss of meaning and depoliticization; at the same time, however, the deep-seated clash between sentimental and polemical cultural representations also makes clear that there is still much at …
Security Now: Addressing The Needs Of Darfur’S Children, Nicole Judd
Security Now: Addressing The Needs Of Darfur’S Children, Nicole Judd
Human Rights & Human Welfare
In the Darfur region of Sudan, over 2.3 million children have been affected by the ongoing genocide (UNICEF 2008). Unlike their adult counterparts, children are impacted more severely by the consequences of warfare as they are undergoing a fragile developmental process. While each one of the affected children has had their basic human rights violated in some form, the narrative of trauma differs between groups. Sexually-exploited girls, boy soldiers, unaccompanied children, and those who remain in under-resourced camps have experienced the protracted violence in unique ways. To mitigate the effects of war, each group should receive individualized humanitarian assistance as …
The Ancient City Occupied St. Augustine As A Test Case For Stephen Ash's Civil War Occupation Model, Eric Paul Totten
The Ancient City Occupied St. Augustine As A Test Case For Stephen Ash's Civil War Occupation Model, Eric Paul Totten
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis intends to prove that Stephen V. Ash’s model of occupation from his work, When the Yankees Came: Conflict and Chaos in the Occupied South, is applicable to St. Augustine’s occupation experience in the Civil War. Three overarching themes in Ash’s work are consistent with Civil War St. Augustine. First, that Union policy of conciliation towards southern civilians was abandoned after the first few months of occupation due to both nonviolent and violent resistance from those civilians. Second, that Ash’s “zones of occupation” of the occupied South, being garrisoned towns, no-man’s-land, and the Confederate frontier apply to St. Augustine …
The Whiteman's Seminole White Manhood, Indians And Slaves, And The Second Seminole War, Francis Mahan Iv
The Whiteman's Seminole White Manhood, Indians And Slaves, And The Second Seminole War, Francis Mahan Iv
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study demonstrates that both government officials‟ and the settlers‟ perceptions of the Seminoles and Black Seminoles in Florida were highly influenced by their paternalistic and Jeffersonian world views. These perceptions also informed their policies concerning the Seminoles and Black Seminoles. The study is separated into three sections. The first chapter covers the years of 1820-1823. This section argues that until 1823, most settlers and government officials viewed the Seminoles as noble savages that were dependent on the U.S. Furthermore, most of these individuals saw the Black Seminoles as being secure among the Seminole Indians and as no threat to …
The Current Ethiopian Experience, Sahai Redleaf
The Current Ethiopian Experience, Sahai Redleaf
Whittier Scholars Program
The objective of this project is to understand the causes of growth and development (or lack thereof) that influence nations by examining Ethiopia’s economy and the political dynamics. In this research, Ethiopia’s history highlights major factors that influence tyrannical patterns within political parties, especially within the last few decades. Utilizing an economic approach, the project examined Ethiopia’s growth performance from 1989 to 2007. The Penn World Tables are the primary source of the data used to analyze figures of GDP per capita, adjusted by Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). This allows for prices to be adjusted so that a product in …

Osler And The Infected Letter: A History Of Disinfecting Mail With Special Reference To Smallpox, Charles T. Ambrose
Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications
In January 1876 William Osler, a young Canadian physician, was recovering from a mild case of smallpox contracted while attending patients at the Montreal General Hospital (Figure 1). In a letter written that same month to an old schoolmate (ArthurJarvis), Osier described his illness and noted in closing, "You need not be afraid of this letter. I will disinfect it before sending." Concern about disseminating smallpox via the letter was well founded. In his medical textbook of 1892, Osler would later write that smallpox can be conveyed by fomites: "the dried scales [of variola scabs] ... as a dust-like powder …

Atoms For Peace, Us Foreign Policy And The Globalization Of Nuclear Technology, 1953-1960, Mara Drogan
Atoms For Peace, Us Foreign Policy And The Globalization Of Nuclear Technology, 1953-1960, Mara Drogan
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation analyzes the bilateral agreements for cooperation on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy enacted under President Eisenhower's Atoms for Peace program from 1953 to 1960. It challenges previous representations of Atoms for Peace that depict it as a legitimate attempt at arms control or dismiss it as a mere propaganda campaign. Atoms for Peace was not intended to be a disarmament measure. Instead, it united nuclear, economic, and foreign policy objectives in a synergistic program intended to fulfill a number of postwar aims: blunting nuclear fears in order to quiet criticisms of the American nuclear project, supporting postwar …

Isaac V. Elizabeth Gouverneur : Sex, Sensibility, And The Creation Of New York's 1787 Divorce Law, Michelle Dorothy Duross
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Isaac v. Elizabeth Gouverneur: Sex, Sensibility, and the Creation of New York's 1787 Divorce Law combines legal and cultural history to illuminate the beginning of judicial divorce in New York State, analyzing the creation of New York’s 1787 divorce law within a prism not previously used in studies relating to early New York divorce. Prior scholarship has either denied the existence of the 1787 law or concentrated on nineteenth-century rulings to conclude that alimony was always dependent on a wife’s innocence. Chancery Court records from 1787 to 1814, however, show that guilty wives were granted alimony, illustrating a significant change …
The Clinton Years: Assessing Success In The Bosnian Genocide Intervention, Natalie Pierce
The Clinton Years: Assessing Success In The Bosnian Genocide Intervention, Natalie Pierce
Global Tides
This paper seeks to argue that President Bill Clinton’s intervention in the Bosnian genocide was successful. In order to define success, the author compiles a list of Clinton’s explicitly stated goals for the region. The author explores Clinton’s campaign promises on Bosnia, which he expressed in public statements and the first presidential debate against the current President, George H.W. Bush, and demonstrates how the Bosnian initiatives were slightly altered after Clinton took office. The author uses a variety of sources including newspaper articles, speech and debate transcripts, and secondary sources to construct Clinton’s concrete objections. Through a chronological assessment of …

The Gendered Plight Of Terror: Annexation And Exile In Latvia 1940-1950, Irene Elksnis Geisler
Dissertations
Drawing on methodologies employed in Oral History and Memory scholarship, this qualitative study utilizes the lens of gender to explore narratives contesting time-honored notions of violence, war and peace. It examines Latvia's history through the voices of women from 1940 to 1950. This project seeks to interpret Latvian history based on the experiences of those who survived invasion, exile and deportation. It positions the narratives of women at the center rather than at the margins of historical analysis. The project analyzes themes central to women's social roles in order to attain a more complete understanding of war, exile and people's …

Providing For The Common Defense: Internal Security And The Cold War, 1945-1975, Marc A. Patenaude
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
While the historiography of the Red Scare has often discussed the major internal security legislation passed during the period, the legislation in question is often given short shrift and characterized as a misguided response by Congress. It is important to examine this legislation not only for what it did for the internal security of the nation, but also for what it meant symbolically. Implementation of governmental policy, including internal security policy, through legislation often also serves as a window to the beliefs and values of those crafting the legislation. By examining the internal security legislation passed during the Red Scare, …

“Because We Were Japanese Soldiers": The Failure Of Japanese Tactics At Changkufeng And Nomonhan And Lessons Left Unlearned, Ryan Schultz
Honors Papers
In their conflicts with the Soviet Union in 1938-1939, Imperial Japanese Army forces suffered a series of dramatic defeats at the hands of the Red Army, the descendant of an enemy they had been preparing to face since the conclusion of the Russo-Japanese War. At the root of these military failures was the dramatic tactical insufficiency of Japanese army doctrine, which had not evolved to meet the combined arms threat of a modern opponent. Instead, relying on 'spiritual superiority' over firepower, they were forced to attack Soviet tanks with firebombs and operate continuously under the heavy fire of enemy artillery. …
Dow Chemical Vs. ‘Coercive Utopians’: Constructing The Contested Ground Of Science And Government Regulation In 1970s America, Amy M. Hay
History Faculty Publications
In 1979, the Dow Chemical Company published an excerpt from a speech by H. Peter Metzger that announced an emerging conflict in American ideals and public policy. He stated that a new kind of individual inhabited Washington, people from the counterculture who were “coercive utopians” because they sought to achieve their agenda through covert actions and hoped to end the American free market economy. Following the 1962 publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and the subsequent banning of DDT in 1972, Dow and other chemical manufacturers fought to keep the regulatory climate favorable to industry. Dow found itself defending the …
