The Enlightenment Tradition Of Hume And Smith In Austen: Windows To Understanding, Nicole Coonradt Jan 2012

The Enlightenment Tradition Of Hume And Smith In Austen: Windows To Understanding, Nicole Coonradt

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

In his Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759), Adam Smith notes the importance of "little department[s]"-those smaller circles of social contact: "By Nature the events which immediately affect that little department in which we ourselves have some little management and directions, which immediately affect ourselves, our friends, our country, are the events which interest us the most, and which chiefly excite our desires and aversions, our hopes and fears, our joys and sorrows:' Alasdair MacIntyre would agree with this idea of one's sphere of influence, especially in the works of Jane Austen. Clearly, this concern with self, others, and country might …

Facing The Future With The Shield Of Aeneas: Virgil And The Testing Of Dryden's Catholic Faith In The 1690s, John J. Burke Jr. Jan 2012

Facing The Future With The Shield Of Aeneas: Virgil And The Testing Of Dryden's Catholic Faith In The 1690s, John J. Burke Jr.

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

The shield of Aeneas has always had a sense of mystery about it. His shield, like that of Achilles in the Iliad, is not merely a physical object designed to protect him from crippling wounds or death while in battle; oddly, it is also a work of art. Moreover, it is a work of art that is supernatural in origin, fashioned in this instance by the Roman god Vulcan and presented to the Trojan exile Aeneas by his goddess mother, Venus, in book 8 of Virgil's Aeneid. There have been countless discussions of what we are to make …

Strategic Perspectives: Clausewitz, Sun-Tzu And Thucydides, Richard Rousseau Jan 2012

Strategic Perspectives: Clausewitz, Sun-Tzu And Thucydides, Richard Rousseau

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This article illustrates the nature and function of strategy in military affairs. The main argument of the article is that strategy is a bridge connecting military power with political purpose. Strategy and military power are not alike, nor is strategy the actual application of power. Similarly, strategy is not policy. Strategy should be seen as a “theory of success.” Strategy is the source of operational plans intended to convert nominal military capability into useful performance against the enemy. To illustrate the nature and function of strategy, the article reflects on the behavior of Winston Churchill’s British government in the summer …

The Times And Characteristics Of Koroghlu, Elza Ismayilova

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The hero and ashug Koroghlu, who lived in the XVI century in Turkey, is known for his presence as a literary character and poet but is also documented as a historical figure. The French And Indian Wars: New France's Situational Indian Policies During The Fox And Natchez Conflicts, 1701-1732, Stephen Jay Fohl Jan 2012

The French And Indian Wars: New France's Situational Indian Policies During The Fox And Natchez Conflicts, 1701-1732, Stephen Jay Fohl

Online Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the often-glorified relationship between New France and the American Indians with which that empire came into contact in North America, focusing primarily on the conflicting policies seen during the Fox Wars and the Natchez Wars. Many recent histories of New France, including Richard White's seminal study The Middle Ground: Indians, Empires and Republics, 1650-1815, focus primarily on the lands surrounding the Great Lakes. These histories champion a French Indian policy that was dominated by the fur trade and illustrated by the outbreak of the Fox Wars in 1712. However, New France's Indian policy was not always dictated …

The Turning Point Of The American Revolution: Nathanael Greene's Southern Campaign Of 1780-1781, Brian D. Kerl

Theses

With 1,000 Continentals and 1,300 militia, General George Washington assigned General Nathanael Greene to defeat the British in the out hem region of North and South Carolina and Georgia and win the American Revolution.' Between 1780-1781, the British restored South Carolina's loyalist government, and proved victorious at battles in Savannah, Georgia, and in Charleston and Camden, South Carolina. The British also had numerous Tory (colonists loyal to the King) sympathizers in the region. Nathanael Greene's mission was to defeat the British Army in the South with few regular troops, limited supplies, and no local government to call upon for assistance. …

Jürgen Habermas And The Third Reich, Max Schiller Jan 2012

Jürgen Habermas And The Third Reich, Max Schiller

CMC Senior Theses

Jürgen Habermas is a preeminent European intellectual who was a German teenager during World War II. He was profoundly impacted by the devastation wrought by the Nazi regime and the social regression that it embodied. He dedicated his intellectual efforts to studying philosophy and developing a theoretical framework that demonstrates how collaboration and unimpeded dialogue are consistent with the promotion of human interest and how there exist quasi-transcendent protections against threats to modern social progress. This thesis explicates how the Third Reich, from Habermas's perspective, exemplifies violence to Habermas's model of communicative action and how we can learn to better …

Responses To Missionization At Missions San Antonio, San Carlos, And Soledad, Sam A. Bennett Jan 2012

Responses To Missionization At Missions San Antonio, San Carlos, And Soledad, Sam A. Bennett

CMC Senior Theses

The converted populations of Missions San Antonio, San Carlos, and Soledad never participated in an organized revolt against the Franciscan missionaries like other populations did throughout the American West. Yet, the converts were subjected to the same methods of control by the Franciscan missionaries. Because the tribes of the Monterey area were small and relatively unconnected to their neighbors, the groups could not organize as one once they were on the missions. For these missions individual revolt was how the converts responded to the types of control that they were subjected to. This paper analyzes the common threads in the …

T.S. Eliot's Anti-Modernism: Poetry And Tradition In The European Waste Land, John Bedecarré Jan 2012

T.S. Eliot's Anti-Modernism: Poetry And Tradition In The European Waste Land, John Bedecarré

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis hopes to contribute to a reconciliation of the apparent conflict between Eliot's conservative outlook and his formally innovative poetry. I do not advocate stripping Eliot of his modernist label. I would rather amend the term "modernism." This qualification is important because the modernist label carries connotations that simply do not do justice to Eliot. For example, the label implies that modernists wanted to move forward, away from the past. Eliot wanted to move backwards, partly because he felt other artists had left the past behind. In an essay introducing the early twentieth-century modernists, the Norton Anthology of British …

Oscar James Dunn: A Case Study In Race & Politics In Reconstruction Louisiana, Brian Mitchell Dec 2011

Oscar James Dunn: A Case Study In Race & Politics In Reconstruction Louisiana, Brian Mitchell

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The study of African American Reconstruction leadership has presented a variety of unique challenges for modern historians who struggle to piece together the lives of men, who prior to the Civil War, had little political identity. The scant amounts of primary source data in regard to these leaders’ lives before the war, the destruction of many documents in regard to their leadership following the Reconstruction Era, and the treatment of these figures by historians prior to the Revisionist movement have left this body of extremely important political figures largely unexplored. This dissertation will examine the life of one of Louisiana’s …

The Book Of Enoch And Second Temple Judaism., Nancy Perkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the ancient Jewish text the Book of Enoch, the scholarly work done on the text since its discovery in 1773, and its seminal importance to the study of ancient Jewish history. Primary sources for the thesis project are limited to Flavius Josephus and the works of the Old Testament. Modern scholars provide an abundance of secondary information. These scholars include R. H. Charles, D. S. Russell, Albert Baumgarten, Seth Schwartz, George Nickelsburg, and James VanderKam. The Book of Enoch was composed from roughly 300 BCE to 10 BCE. The Book of Enoch stands as substantial proof that …

The Nature And Extent Of The French Resistance Against Nazi Occupation During World War Ii, Jeffrey Folker Dec 2011

The Nature And Extent Of The French Resistance Against Nazi Occupation During World War Ii, Jeffrey Folker

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

Comprehensively covers a very misunderstood and myth-laden part of the history of WWII. Folker makes it clear, from a comprehensive review of primary and secondary literature, that the resistance offered by the French to Nazi Occupation was largely insignificant and its effectiveness overblown during and after the war.

New World Rivals: The Role Of The Narragansetts In The Breakdown Of Anglo-Native Relations During King Philip’S War, Lauren Sagar Dec 2011

New World Rivals: The Role Of The Narragansetts In The Breakdown Of Anglo-Native Relations During King Philip’S War, Lauren Sagar

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

On June 28, 1675, King Philip’s War officially broke out between the Native Americans and English colonists of southern New England. The English immediately sought an alliance with the Narragansett tribe of Rhode Island due to their vast power in the area. However, English actions during this quest for alliance would ultimately turn the Narragansetts into enemies. The diplomatic and military encounters between the Narragansetts and English serve as a lens to understand dispossession, intercultural conflict, and colonialism during this period.

A Union Of Negatives: Ayatollah Khomeini And The Mobilization Of Dissent In The Iranian Revolution Of 1979, Nicholas G. Sumski Dec 2011

A Union Of Negatives: Ayatollah Khomeini And The Mobilization Of Dissent In The Iranian Revolution Of 1979, Nicholas G. Sumski

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

The Islamic Revolution of 1979 eradicated half a century of Westernization in Iran and installed Ayatollah Khomeini as the leader of Iran’s new Islamic Republic. However, the revolutionary forces were not strongly unified under Khomeini’s radical Islamic vision. Indeed, many facets of the opposition simply desired moderate political reforms to increase democratic participation in the government and opposed the imposition of a government directed under the auspices of Islam. By the late 1970s, though, these various moderate revolutionaries realized that the only legitimate means to overthrow the reign of the American-supported Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, would be to join the …

La Grande Arche Des Fugitifs?,/I> Huguenots In The Dutch Republic After 1685, Michael Joseph Walker Dec 2011

La Grande Arche Des Fugitifs?,/I> Huguenots In The Dutch Republic After 1685, Michael Joseph Walker

Theses and Dissertations

In the seventeenth century, many refugees saw the United Provinces of the Netherlands as a promised land—a gathering ark, or in French, arche. In fact, Pierre Bayle called it, "la grande arche des fugitifs." This thesis shows the reception of one particular group of Protestant refugees, the Huguenots, who migrated to the Netherlands because of Catholic confessionalization in France, especially after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. The thesis offers two case studies—one of the acceptance of Huguenot clergymen and one of the mixed reception of refugee radical and philosopher Pierre Bayle—in order to add nuance …

The Great Men Of Christendom: The Failure Of The Third Crusade, Justin Lee Mathews Dec 2011

The Great Men Of Christendom: The Failure Of The Third Crusade, Justin Lee Mathews

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis is a study of the reasons for the failure of the Third Crusade to achieve its stated objectives, despite the many advantages with which the venture began. It is proposed herein that the Third Crusade—and by extension all of the previous and subsequent Crusades—were destined to fail because of structural disadvantages which plagued the expeditions to the Holy Land. The Christians in the Holy Land were not selfsufficient, and they depended on an extensive amount of aid from Europe for their existence, but the Christians of Europe had their own goals and concerns which did not allow them …

The Anglo-American Press And The 'Secret' Rearmament Of Hitler's Germany, 1933 To 1935, Jason Ranke Dec 2011

The Anglo-American Press And The 'Secret' Rearmament Of Hitler's Germany, 1933 To 1935, Jason Ranke

All Theses

This thesis will examine the Anglo-American press coverage of Germany's secret rearmament between 1933 and 1935, with the aim of pursuing three main objectives:
1. Describe the rearmament process occurring in Germany and how it related to, or influenced, the country's position in international affairs.
2. Investigate the accuracy and objectivity of Anglo-American press coverage of the German rearmament. This goal will be achieved by analyzing and comparing information from several major American and British newspapers and magazines from 1933 to 1935 with data gleaned from the principal secondary sources on Nazi rearmament and foreign policy.
3. Determine how Hitler …

Captain Pierce's Fight: An Investigation Into A King Philip's War Battle And Its Remembrance And Memorialization, Lawrence K. Lacroix

Graduate Masters Theses

On March 26, 1676 Native Americans from southern New England overran a company of Plymouth Colony militia, handing the English one of their worst defeats during King Philip's War. This study was concerned with the reconstruction of the Pierce Battle, as it has come to be known, and its eventual memorialization. The study's two main research questions were: First, to what extent did a complete and critical examination of the primary and secondary sources change, support, or add to the commonly accepted battle perspective? Second, in what ways did a contextual analysis of King Philip's War monuments in Rhode Island …

The North Pole Controversy Of 1909 And The Treatment Of The Greenland Inuit People: An Historical Perspective, Kayla J. Shypski Dec 2011

The North Pole Controversy Of 1909 And The Treatment Of The Greenland Inuit People: An Historical Perspective, Kayla J. Shypski

History Theses

Polar exploration was a large part of American culture and society during the mid to late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The North Pole controversy of 1909 in which two American Arctic explorers both claimed to have reached the North Pole was a culmination of the polar exploration era. However, one aspect of the polar expeditions that is relatively unknown is the treatment of the native Inuit peoples of the Arctic by the polar explorers. The case of a small group of Inuit peoples who were brought back from Greenland and sold to the American Museum of Natural …

Following The Principles: Case Studies In Operations Other Than War, 1945-1999, Kevin Joseph Dougherty Dec 2011

Following The Principles: Case Studies In Operations Other Than War, 1945-1999, Kevin Joseph Dougherty

Dissertations

In the post-World War II-era, operations other than war (OOTW) were the types of conflict most commonly faced by the United States. This term for what had previously been called by such names as small wars and low intensity conflict was incorporated in the Army’s capstone manual, Field Manual (FM) 100-5, Operations, in 1993. Field Manual 100-5 also listed objective, unity of effort, legitimacy, perseverance, restraint, and security as the six principles of OOTW. An analysis of eight OOTWs that occurred between 1945 and 1999 indicates that the balanced application of these principles is a reliable predicator of the operation’s …

Consequences Of Contact: An Evaluation Of Childhood Health Patterns Using Enamel Hypoplasias Among The Colonial Maya Of Tipu, Amanda R. Harvey

Master's Theses

Located in western Belize, Tipu was occupied from 1541-1704. This Colonial Maya population from a Spanish visita mission church was analyzed to investigate health disturbances associated with European contact. Dental defect called enamel hypoplasias were scored to assess childhood health. Standard methods of scoring (Buikstra and Ubelaker 1994) were employed to assess frequency, severity, and type of episode in the permanent anterior dentition. For analysis, 325 individuals were placed into age groups of subadults (6-17 years), younger adults (18-35 years), and older adults (36-50+ years). The population was also considered for differences by sex and tooth type.

Results showed a …

Family, Feud, And The Conduct Of War In Anglo-Saxon England, Elnathan Barnett Dec 2011

Family, Feud, And The Conduct Of War In Anglo-Saxon England, Elnathan Barnett

Master's Theses

Anglo-Saxon society was built around the concept of feud, and it is clear from history, law, and literature that the twin concerns of family and vengeance remained pillars of Anglo-Saxon society and consciousness throughout the period. Given constant warfare and the cultural and social importance of feuding, it would appear logical that warfare was essentially feud writ large, that conflicts pitted one kin group against another and vengeance for the dead was a major, if not the only, reason for making war. However, royal families often fought among themselves, while wars waged to avenge a death are conspicuous by their …
