Say “Neigh” To Abuse: On The Treatment Of Horses And Mules In The Civil War, Anika N. Jensen

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

The stuffed head of Old Baldy, General George Meade’s favorite horse, can be found mounted on the wall of the Grand Army of the Republic Museum in Philadelphia. General Robert E. Lee’s horse, Traveler, received gifts and international adoration even after the war’s end, and General Ulysses S. Grant’s three war mounts, including one pony stolen from a plantation belonging to Jeff Davis’ brother, rested comfortably in fame and verdant pastures until the ends of their lives [excerpt].

Lydia Prout’S Dreadfullest Thought, Douglas L. Winiarski Sep 2015

Lydia Prout’S Dreadfullest Thought, Douglas L. Winiarski

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

What was Lydia Prout’s “dreadfullest thought”? This microhistory, which examines one of the earliest devotional journals penned by a woman in British North America, uncovers surprising connections between the “unruly passion” of a devoted mother who suffered repeated bereavements during the 1710s and the Satanic fantasies of Salem witchcraft confessors in 1692. An annotated edition of Prout’s journal is reproduced in the essay’s appendix.

Conflict, Tension, Strength: The History Of St. Pauls Mission, St. Labre Indian School, And St. Stephens Indian School, 1884—Present', Donna Peterson

History ETDs

Conflict, Tension, Strength,' explores the longevity of three separate Catholic Indian missions in the West: St. Paul's Mission in Hays, Montana; St. Labre Indian School in Ashland, Montana; and St. Stephens Indian School in St. Stephens, Wyoming. These mission schools, in part, possess two common traits: they have all reached the 125-year milestone and they are all located on or adjacent to reservations that serve two distinct Indian tribes. St. Paul's Mission is on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, home to the Gros Ventre and Assiniboine tribes. St. Labre Indian School serves students from the Northern Cheyenne and Crow reservations. …

Documentation And Fiction In Hameiri's Accounts Of The Great War, Tamar S. Drukker Sep 2015

Documentation And Fiction In Hameiri's Accounts Of The Great War, Tamar S. Drukker

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Documentation and Fiction in Hameiri's Accounts of the Great War" Tamar S. Drukker discusses the only surviving Hebrew-language docu-novel of the Great War, written by Avigdor Hameiri (1890-1970), a Hungarian Jewish officer. His 1930 memoir The Great Madness is a wartime personal journal about his life at the Russian front. Many of the episodes described in The Great Madness receive a more styled treatment in Hameiri's wartime short stories which appeared in three collections during the 1920s. These stories are sometimes surreal, symbolic, and carefully crafted. Drukker's study of Hameiri's wartime life writing and his literary rendition …

"Arouse, Ye Slaves!": The Bill Haywood Trial, The Clash Of Organized Labor And Capital In The West, And The Influence Of The Appeal To Reason, William Toombs Sep 2015

"Arouse, Ye Slaves!": The Bill Haywood Trial, The Clash Of Organized Labor And Capital In The West, And The Influence Of The Appeal To Reason, William Toombs

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The trial for the murder of a controversial ex-governor of Idaho represented a watershed moment in American labor history, especially in the West. The accused, three men who had been involved with the leadership of a predominantly western labor union, had been questionably extradited from Colorado to Idaho, causing a firestorm within the pro-labor forces. This public uproar and denunciation eventually caught the attention of sitting President Theodore Roosevelt, who became an unexpected and unwanted mouthpiece for concentrated capital. Ultimately, as this case came to occupy almost every major newspaper in the country, it illustrated the fierce and deadly clashes …

To Support A "Brother In Christ": Evangelical Groups And U.S.-Guatemalan Relations During The Ríos Montt Regime, Lauren Frances Turek Sep 2015

To Support A "Brother In Christ": Evangelical Groups And U.S.-Guatemalan Relations During The Ríos Montt Regime, Lauren Frances Turek

History Faculty Research

After Ríos Montt, an evangelical Christian, seized power in Guatemala in a 1982 military coup, U.S. evangelical missionaries and parachurch organizations supported his regime through public outreach, fundraising, and congressional lobbying. Despite mounting evidence that Ríos Montt’s campaign against Guatemala’s “communist insurgency” involved the mass killing of indigenous Mayans, conservative evangelical groups in the United States argued that the dictator’s Christian faith would compel him to improve the country’s human rights situation. This essay explores the theological beliefs underpinning evangelical support for Ríos Montt and contends that backing from U.S. and Guatemalan evangelicals for his regime and for Reagan administration’s …

Prisoners In War: Zoos And Zoo Animals During Human Conflict 1870-1947, Clelly Johnson Aug 2015

Prisoners In War: Zoos And Zoo Animals During Human Conflict 1870-1947, Clelly Johnson

All Theses

Animals are sentient beings capable of many of the same feelings experienced by humans. They mourn a loss, they feel love and loyalty, and they experience fear. During wars and conflicts, fear is a prevailing emotion among humans, who worry for their well-being. Animals, too, feel fear during human conflicts, and that fear is magnified when those animals are caged. History has shown the victimization of zoo animals during military conflicts. Zoo animals already lack agency over their own lives, and in times of war, they are seen as a liability. From the Siege of Paris to recent Israel-Hamas conflicts …

Silenced Voices: Sexual Violence During And After World War Ii, Cassidy L. Chiasson Aug 2015

Silenced Voices: Sexual Violence During And After World War Ii, Cassidy L. Chiasson

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the different types of sexual violence present during and immediately after World War II and focuses specifically on the European Theater of the war. Memoirs, journals and diaries were used as primary sources. This research focuses on the overlapping themes of sexual violence in the form of forcible rape and sexual violence as a means of protection and survival. The goal of this research is to provide a comprehensive view of the complexity surrounding many situations in which sexual violence occurred. It also aims to partially fill the gap in historical literature on this topic, and bring …

"The Means Of Doing Us A Great Deal Of Injury": The Involvement Of North Germany's Port Cities And Merchants In The American Civil War, 1861-65, Patrick Gaul Aug 2015

"The Means Of Doing Us A Great Deal Of Injury": The Involvement Of North Germany's Port Cities And Merchants In The American Civil War, 1861-65, Patrick Gaul

Traversea: The Journal of Transatlantic History

Current scholarship analyses the American Civil War as a global shock that affected people and places throughout the transatlantic world. But curiously, the role of Central Europe and its major Atlantic ports and merchants has mostly been neglected by this historiographic trend so far. This is rather astonishing, since Hamburg, Bremen, and their hinterlands played a crucial role for the global impacts of North America's bloodiest conflict.

The Elite Of The Elites: The U.S. Marine Raider Battalions, 1942-1944: A Case Study In Elite Military Organizations, Stephen Mark Houseknecht Jul 2015

The Elite Of The Elites: The U.S. Marine Raider Battalions, 1942-1944: A Case Study In Elite Military Organizations, Stephen Mark Houseknecht

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

In 1942, the U.S. Marine Corps activated the Marine Raider battalions, the first American special forces units of World War II. However, the introduction of an elite subculture within the ranks of the Marine Corps, which already prided itself on being the nation's elite fighting force, resulted in conflicting cultures and competing identities. Many Marines felt that the creation of an elite within the ranks of the elite was superfluous and undesirable. The preferential treatment and widespread publicity accorded to the Raiders, combined with the Raiders' sense of exceptionalism and claims to superiority, garnered resentment among other Marines. Ultimately, the …

History, Memory, And The Indian Struggle For Autonomy In The Seventeenth-Century Hudson Valley, Jason R. Sellers Jul 2015

History, Memory, And The Indian Struggle For Autonomy In The Seventeenth-Century Hudson Valley, Jason R. Sellers

History and American Studies Articles

This essay uses treaty records, council minutes, personal correspondence, and travel narratives to argue that Hudson Valley Indians seized on the 1664 English conquest of New Netherland to try to position Natives and newcomers as independent members of an extended community sharing a common past and landscape. Formulating a history emphasizing peace, preserving the memory of that past through ritual actions, and involving English colonists in processes that rested on that history, Native Americans sought to integrate the newcomers into their existing network of social relations and a physical landscape that manifested those relations. Meanwhile, English colonists seeking to secure …
