A Radical Idea: Charles Ellet’S Rams, Savannah Labbe Apr 2018

A Radical Idea: Charles Ellet’S Rams, Savannah Labbe

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

The political cartoon above shows an engineer named Charles Ellet attempting to get a meeting with General George McClellan. Ellet contacted many government officials and important men to try to get his ideas recognized and implemented. Ellet was born in Pennsylvania in 1810 and was inspired to become an engineer when he watched the opening of the Erie Canal. At age 20, he went to Paris to learn his craft, attending lectures for civil engineers and examining bridges, railroads, and other structures. He returned to the United States afterwards and in 1835 went to work as an assistant engineer for …

Fighting On Borrowed Wings: The Combat Experiences Of Americans Serving With French And British Units During The First World War, Kyle Nellesen Apr 2018

Fighting On Borrowed Wings: The Combat Experiences Of Americans Serving With French And British Units During The First World War, Kyle Nellesen

Voces Novae

During the First World War there were hundreds of Americans who enlisted in the air forces of both France and Great Britain. Through the use of primary documents from these pilots, this paper focuses on the unique experiences of the nearly six hundred men who flew under the command of America’s allies. This includes the discussion of the myths of air combat which envisioned it as a chivalrous battle in the clouds while the reality as experienced by pilots was extremely dangerous and anything but glamorous. The differences in each air force, French, British, as well as the United States, …

The Battle Of The Somme: How The 18th Division Avoided Disaster, 1 July 1916, Paul Fellman Apr 2018

The Battle Of The Somme: How The 18th Division Avoided Disaster, 1 July 1916, Paul Fellman

Voces Novae

This paper focuses on the unique ability of the British 18th Division to attain all of its allocated goals on July 1, 1916, the first day at the Battle of the Somme. The history of that day is burdened by the dismal failure of the British Army and ashocking 60,000 British casualties. Although recent scholars have breathed new life into discussion concerning the Battle of the Somme, they have largely ignored the story of the 18th Division and its commanding general, Sir Ivor Maxse. Historians tend to neglect two crucial elements which heavily influenced the 18th’s success—the superb training and …

Greed At The New York Stock Exchange And The Levitation Of The Pentagon: Early Protest Theatre By Abbie Hoffman And Jerry Rubin, Ashley Duree

Voces Novae

This paper focuses on the theoretical and scholarly influences upon Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin in the years prior to 1967, and how that affected their motivations and decisions regarding their pre-Yippie activism in the fall of 1967. It focuses on two events: the August demonstration at the New York Stock Exchange and the National Mobilization to End the War in Vietnam’s March on the Pentagon in October (specifically on Jerry Rubin’s role and Abbie Hoffman’s intent to levitate the Pentagon). In providing details about these two events in relation to their theoretical and scholarly influences, this paper analyzes how …

The Imperial Legacy: An Examination Of The Trends Of Empire And Genocide From German Southwest Africa To The General Government, Laura Guebert Apr 2018

The Imperial Legacy: An Examination Of The Trends Of Empire And Genocide From German Southwest Africa To The General Government, Laura Guebert

Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal

This project is an examination of correlations between imperial enterprises of the Second German Empire and the Nazi Reich through the lenses of global and imperial critiques. The three primary case studies are German Southwest Africa, the Ober Ost, and Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe, particularly the General Government. This research draws heavily on certain themes and theories developed by leading historians of modern German and Eastern European history, including Timothy Snyder, Ben Kiernan, Shelley Baranowski, Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius, and Christopher Browning. By understanding the shared trends of empire and genocide, it is my aim to bring the actions of the National …

The Pawn Of Rome: The Roman Infantryman, Nanyi R. Yang Apr 2018

The Pawn Of Rome: The Roman Infantryman, Nanyi R. Yang

Young Historians Conference

Even to this day, the Roman army stands out as one of the most successful military forces in human history. The widespread success of the Roman Empire was in large part due to its armies, who were able to meet challenges with flexible and effective troops. These armies faced all kinds of attacks, from the swift hit-and-run attacks of the Germanic tribes to the crushing cavalry charges of the Parthian Empire. Rome’s military might, however, was unrelenting. This paper focuses on the Roman soldier and how he was trained to be adaptable to the variety of enemies and obstacles he …

Honor, Courage, Commitment: Navy Recruitment Posters In World War Ii, Shelby A. Georges Apr 2018

Honor, Courage, Commitment: Navy Recruitment Posters In World War Ii, Shelby A. Georges

Honors College Theses

Navy recruitment posters from World War II are an important piece of American culture. The iconic signage can be seen in antique stores and textbooks alike. However, these posters provide more than just bold imagery and vintage decor. By analyzing recruitment posters as if they were advertisements and placing them in the context of the time period, many facets of American identity can be understood, especially regarding race, gender, and patriotism. These posters, while they almost never stated the specific outlined duties of Naval careers or requirements for enlisting, advertised to readers under the premise that they understood the guidelines …

Reckoning With Violence: Counterinsurgency, Prisons, And Gang Truces In Los Angeles And El Salvador 1979-2017, Sarah L. Knopp

History ETDs

Mara Salvatrucha is a street gang that developed organizationally in California's prisons in the 1980s and was exported to El Salvador beginning in 1992. Convicted felons were deported to their native El Salvador just as the Peace Accords brought an end to the twelve-year civil war. Most of these convicted felons had come to California as children during the civil war, and many had been present for the seminal gang truce in Los Angeles in 1992 and 1993. Some of those same gang members were also present during the gang truce negotiated in El Salvador in 2012. The latter truce …

The Heart Of K'É: Transforming Diné Special Education And Unsettling The Colonial Logics Of Disability, Sandra Yellowhorse Apr 2018

The Heart Of K'É: Transforming Diné Special Education And Unsettling The Colonial Logics Of Disability, Sandra Yellowhorse

American Studies ETDs

This paper takes up the roles of ideology and spatiality as they impact Diné students and learners in understanding conceptions of normativity, neuro-diversity and bodily variance. I am concerned with how the movement and creation of Indigenous schools and their praxis still maintain and often times produce settler colonial ideologies of being, personhood, difference and ability. I illustrate the challenges that Diné planners and educators face in entrenching cultural knowledge and language into their educational initiatives, while some of the problematic manifestations and expressions of normativity present themselves through state polices, federal law and mainstream curriculum.

I focus on the …

War Lust And Unshaven, Unkempt Individuals Examining The Csb|Sju Campus, Catholicism, And The Anti-Vietnam War Movement From 1965-1968, Stephanie Haeg Apr 2018

War Lust And Unshaven, Unkempt Individuals Examining The Csb|Sju Campus, Catholicism, And The Anti-Vietnam War Movement From 1965-1968, Stephanie Haeg

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

Two important elements of the anti-Vietnam war movement were the student protests and religious pacifism, but the overlap of the two areas is rarely examined. What were college students nationwide doing during that time, and how did the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University differ from both secular and other Catholic colleges? How did Catholicism affect the CSB|SJU anti-war movement from 1965-1968? I examine student newspapers from this time to see how the language and rhetoric used in student’s letters to the editor and opinion pieces reflected Catholic sentiments and theological arguments worldwide. I then reflect on how …

One Peninsula, Many Spains: An Inquiry On Memory, Historiography, And The Legacy Of The Spanish Civil War From 1930 To The Present, Adrian Rios

Honors Projects

In this essay, I analyze the events of the Spanish Civil War and their ramifications through the lens of cultural memory and historiography. I argue that ideas of memory are crucial to how societies and individuals understand history and that the Spanish Civil War had a tremendous impact on the Spanish people and significantly affected the memory not only of witnesses of the conflict, but to their descendants. This essay utilizes primary and secondary sources to understand the function of memory and varied responses to the Spanish Civil War. The essay begins with a brief historical overview of the conflict …

Percepción Y Periodismo: Bohemia In 1950s Cuba, Jeffrey E. O'Brien Apr 2018

Percepción Y Periodismo: Bohemia In 1950s Cuba, Jeffrey E. O'Brien

LSU Master's Theses

Bohemia is perhaps one of the most popularly used sources among Cuban historians because of its array of content. For the vast majority of scholars, the use of Bohemia’s content is utilized to put the nature of the Cuban Revolution in perspective. Rarely have historians ever analyzed Bohemia itself, as a publication. What is intriguing is that historians who analyze the Cuban Revolution usually conclude the leit motif of the insurrection evolved around—and was prompted by—the rupture of the constitutional order. Bohemia, as a magazine committed to democracy—free speech, transparency, fair elections, and so on—provides an important way to see …

“For The Homeland”: Die Deutsche Hausfrau And Reader Responses To World War I, Julie Sliva Davis Apr 2018

“For The Homeland”: Die Deutsche Hausfrau And Reader Responses To World War I, Julie Sliva Davis

History Theses & Dissertations

When the Great War broke out in the summer of 1914, many German Americans living in the United States expressed renewed support and loyalty for Germany in the German-language press. While scholars have thoroughly examined the collective experiences and sentiments of German Americans in the U.S. during World War I, particularly in their press, German-American women and their press have remained largely underrepresented. Notably, however, as evidenced by the largest nationally circulated monthly women’s journal of the time, Die Deutsche Hausfrau (The German Housewife), German-American women did indeed use their press as well to convey increasingly pro-German rhetoric in support …

Jewish Trail Of Tears Ii: Children Refugee Bills Of 1939 And 1940, Dennis Ross Laffer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to compare and contrast the origins, formulation, course, and outcome of three major American immigration schemes to provide haven for German Jewish and non-Aryan refugees and British children: The Intergovernmental Committee for Political Refugees (better known as the Evian Conference), and particularly the German Refugee Children’s Bill (also labeled as the Wagner-Rogers Bill) and the Hennings Bill. The Evian Conference, called for by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the aftermath of the Anschluss, the German annexation of Austria, sought to create a global solution to the problem of forced migration. The Wagner-Rogers Bill, influenced …
