Edgardo Mercado Jarrin: Peruvian Foreign Policy During The First Three Years Of The Revolutionary Military Government, 1968-1970, Cindy Lucille Robertson
History Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines Foreign Minister Edgardo Mercado Jarrin's policies between 1968 and 1971, investigating the degree to which he formulated an independent Peruvian foreign policy. It traces the ideological underpinnings behind Peruvian diplomacy. The study analyzes three basic dimensions of foreign policy: the seizure of La Brea and Parinas oil fields, the capture of unregistered fishing vessels, and the extension of relations to nonaligned and communist countries. General Mercado charted a new course for Peruvian diplomacy by focusing on the inequities of international maritime law, strengthening relations with the Soviets, carving a niche for Peru in Third World politics, and …

The Death Of Markus Lopius: Fact Of Fantasy? First Documented Presence Of A Black Man In Oregon, August 16, 1788, Darrell Millner
Trotter Review
The introduction of the American presence in the early Pacific Northwest has traditionally been portrayed as an exclusively Caucasian endeavor. But with the recent emergence of ethnic studies as a legitimate academic discipline and the development of competent scholars from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, the traditional perspectives on this period of exploration have been broadened and revised. One benefit of this new scholarship is the story of the first documented presence of a black man in the area known today as Oregon. Markus Lopius came to and died in Oregon in 1788.

The Limitations Of Women In Science At Six Midwestern Colleges Due To The Adherence To Conceptions Of Gender Differences Between The Sexes In The Years Of 1880 Through 1940, Denise Mohney '91
Honors Projects, History
It is difficult for college students today to imagine life when the term "discrimination" had not yet been defined or conceived. Yet only a little more than a hundred years ago women were first entering the academic world alongside men. These were often middle class women whose primary interactions with men had been through courtship and marriage. It was questioned whether women's intellectual ability and physical stamina were strong enough to persevere through the college experience. Scientists and physicians, writing for the general public, cited evidence that besides physical distinctions between the sexes, there were also intellectual and emotional differences. …
