Long View (41rb112): Data Recovery Of Two Plains Village Period Components In Roberts County, Texas, Volume 1, J. Michael Quigg, Paul M. Matchen, Charles D. Frederick, Robert A. Ricklis, Brittney Gregory, David Maki, Mark Bateman

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

This archeological data recovery investigation in Roberts County in the northeastern panhandle of Texas was necessitated by the proposed widening of State Highway 70 (CSJ: 0490-04-037) by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Amarillo District. This proposed highway rehabilitation program will directly impact a roughly 10 meter (m, 30 ft.) wide north-south section of prehistoric site 41RB112, the Long View site. This site consists of two horizontally distinct Plains Village period occupations shallowly buried along a linear interfluvial ridge between two small tributary creeks to the Canadian River in the midslope of this broad, dissected valley.

This site was initially …

Data Recovery And Analysis At The Texas State University Ticket Kiosk Project, Located At 41hy160, Spring Lake, Hays County, Texas, Jon C. Lohse, Amy E. Reid, David M. Yelacic, Cinda L. Timperley

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

This report describes the results of data recovery-level archaeological investigations carried out under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 5938 at State Antiquities Landmark 41HY160. The purpose of the project was to offset the impact to cultural deposits at the site stemming from the installation of service utilities for a new restroom facility and ticket kiosk at The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment, (formerly the River Systems Institute) at Texas State University-San Marcos (TxSt). Sponsored by TxSt, the Center for Archaeological Studies excavated a 1×2 meter unit and monitored construction activities. Resulting cultural materials and other archaeological evidence were analyzed …

Wampum, Tawagonshi, And The Two Row Belt, Paul Otto Jan 2013

Wampum, Tawagonshi, And The Two Row Belt, Paul Otto

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

This essay outlines the early history of wampum, explaining its origin, its value to Native Americans, and its first observations by Europeans. It then considers how wampum, as it existed in the 1610s, fits the role of wampum as described in the Tawagonshi document and fits with its manifestation in the Two Row Belt. The essay argues that key elements in the Tawagonshi document and the Two Row Belt itself are inconsistent with wampum use as recorded in archaeological, documentary, and visual sources. This finding does not discount the possibility of a Dutch-Native agreement similar to the one recorded in …

Nietzsche And Darwin, Babette Babich Jan 2013

Nietzsche And Darwin, Babette Babich

Working Papers

Abstract

I argue against the popular view of Nietzsche as Darwinist and I concur with other Nietzsche scholars who have also noted that other authors worked in Nietzsche’s thinking in association with Darwin, not only Spencer and Malthus but also Roux and Haeckel among others which also for Nietzsche included Empedocles and other ancient scientists. Nietzsche offers plain condemnation of Darwin’s views but he is also often associated with Darwin owing to Darwin’s racism and his own vision of rank-order. I conclude with an emphasis on style and Nietzsche’s reading of antiquity to highlight the distinction he sought to make …

Fighting The Germans. Fighting The Germs: Cleveland's Response To The 1918-1919 Spanish Flu Epidemic, Haakon Bjoershol Jan 2013

Fighting The Germans. Fighting The Germs: Cleveland's Response To The 1918-1919 Spanish Flu Epidemic, Haakon Bjoershol

ETD Archive

Epidemics and disease are often overlooked in historical inquiries. This is unfortunate for a number of reasons. First of all, people's beliefs about what causes disease, as well as their ideas about how to respond to disease, are intrinsically linked to culture, philosophical convictions, and identity. Secondly, the ways a society respond to disease and epidemics largely reflect existing ideologies, values, social structures, and various needs and interests. In short, medical history is a tremendously helpful lens for studying political, economic, social, and ideological aspects of cultures and societies. This thesis looks at Cleveland's response to the 1918-19 Spanish Influenza epidemic. …

Ours Is The Harder Lot: Student Patriotism At The University Of Michigan During The Civil War, Julie Mujic Jan 2013

Ours Is The Harder Lot: Student Patriotism At The University Of Michigan During The Civil War, Julie Mujic

History Faculty Publications

Historians have considered some aspects of the impact of the war on higher education, but their work usually focuses on student experiences as soldiers or includes brief analyses of the war period in a larger institutional analysis. Their research does reinforce the unique nature, however, of circumstances at the University of Michigan, where the war period saw increases in enrollment and the expansion of curriculum.

White Female Criminals In Civil War Richmond, 1860-1865, Frances Sisson Jan 2013

White Female Criminals In Civil War Richmond, 1860-1865, Frances Sisson

Honors Theses

This study tells the story of white female criminals and addresses the problem of the white female criminality and the resulting reaction of the patriarchal society in Richmond, Virginia during the Civil War, specifically the years 1861-1864. During the Civil War, white female criminality became a daily occurrence because of the wartime conditions in Richmond, such as inflation and overpopulation. Because of the established patriarchal society and the lack of emphasis on the women's rights movement in the South, the female involvement in crime during the war was extremely shocking to the male driven society. The judicial system struggled with …

Book Review: Colonization After Emancipation: Lincoln And The Movement For Black Resettlement, Allen C. Guelzo Jan 2013

Book Review: Colonization After Emancipation: Lincoln And The Movement For Black Resettlement, Allen C. Guelzo

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

“There is a clause in the Act which is likely to meet with misconstruction in Europe,” wrote Frederick Milnes Edge about the legislation that emancipated the slaves of the District of Columbia in April 1862, “namely the appropriation for colonizing the freed slaves.” Ignore it, Edge advised. It only “was adopted to silence the weak-nerved, whose name is legion—and to enable any of the slaves who see fit to emigrate to more genial climes.” And this, for a long time, has been the way that most commentators have understood colonization—a plan ostensibly designed to expatriate any emancipated blacks to …
