Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal

Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) sought to alleviate poverty and empower women. His commitment to nonviolence and the economic ideal of “small is beautiful” continue to inspire grassroots movements around the globe. This article discusses the Chipko movement of northern India, the protection of rain forests in Kerala’s Silent Valley, the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), and Medha Patkar’s valiant though ultimately futile attempt to save the Narmada River from a massive government damming project. The ongoing legacy of these movements can be found in AWAG, the Ahmedabad Women’s Action Group and Women’s Shanti Sena (Peace Force).

This thesis highlights the historical link between people with epilepsy (PWE) and demonic possession. The discussion traces origins of these views from antiquity to the contemporary era, foregrounding media and scholarship that emphasizes the negative perceptions of PWE developed through Christian teaching and imagery. It explores the question of whether the social isolation, abuse, and violence committed against PWE, through Christian faith healing practices such as exorcism, developed in relation to these stigmatizing views and whether these constitute a human rights violation in accordance with conventions put forth by the United Nations.

National Heritage Areas (NHAs) are nationally distinct landscapes that represent unique cultural, historical, and/or natural attributes significant to the legacy of the United States of America (U.S.). The Great Dismal Swamp, located in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, is a prime candidate for NHA designation with diverse qualifications, among which was its antebellum role as a refuge for formerly enslaved people. The goal of our research, conducted in 2022 during the period of the U.S. Congressional debate on designation, was to investigate and expound upon the rationale for NHA designation of the Swamp. White women continue to contribute to the reproduction and maintenance of White supremacy even when they attempt to pursue antiracism. To better understand their antiracist agency, this study analyzed White women’s experiences and comprehension of White womanhood. Using phenomenology and critical autoethnography, this qualitative study invited six self-proclaimed antiracist White women to participate in individual interviews, attend two focus groups, and reflect on five guided prompts on White womanhood and antiracist action. The study revealed antiracist White women’s feelings of responsibility and lack of perceived agency for antiracist action. วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างการไว้ทรงผมของผู้หญิงกับการนิยามความเป็นหญิงในสังคมไทยในทศวรรษ 2460 - ทศวรรษ 2480 ในบริบทของการเข้าสู่ภาวะความเป็นสมัยใหม่และการสร้างรัฐชาติสมัยใหม่ของไทย และเสนอว่า การถกเถียงกันเรื่องทรงผมของผู้หญิง การพยายามจูงใจหรือบงการการจัดการกับผมของผู้หญิง และการพยายามนิยามความเป็นหญิง ที่เกิดขึ้นในสังคมไทยในช่วงเวลาที่ศึกษา วางอยู่บนฐานความคิดหลัก 3 ประการ คือ ความเป็นสมัยใหม่ คุณค่าทางสังคม และวาระทางการเมือง จากการวิเคราะห์หลักฐานทางประวัติศาสตร์ ได้แก่ สื่อสิ่งพิมพ์ร่วมสมัย งานวรรณกรรม บันทึกส่วนบุคคล รวมไปถึงภาพและภาพถ่ายเก่า พบว่า ในช่วงสามทศวรรษดังกล่าว การไว้ทรงผมแบบจารีตของผู้หญิงในสังคมไทยได้เสื่อมคลายไป และหันไปนิยมทรงผมแบบใหม่ที่รับมาจากตะวันตก โดยเป็นผลจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงประเทศเข้าสู่ความเป็นสมัยใหม่ที่เริ่มต้นในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ไปจนถึงยุคหลังการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง พ.ศ. 2475 ซึ่งทำให้มีการเกิดขึ้นของสื่อสมัยใหม่อย่างสื่อสิ่งพิมพ์และภาพยนตร์ การเข้ามาของเทคโนโลยีและการเกิดธุรกิจความงามรูปแบบใหม่ และที่สำคัญคือการเกิดคนแบบใหม่ที่มีการศึกษา การมองโลก และการใช้ชีวิตแบบตะวันตกผลการศึกษาพบว่า ทรงผมแบบใหม่ คือ “ผมยาวเกล้ามวย” “ผมบ๊อบ” “ผมดัด” รวมถึง “ผมยาว-สวมหมวก” ได้กลายเป็นพื้นที่ของการแย่งชิงกันนิยามความเป็นหญิง เป็นสนามปะทะความคิดระหว่างหญิงและชาย เป็นโอกาสในการสร้างตัวตนแบบสมัยใหม่ของผู้หญิง อีกทั้งแสดงว่าผู้หญิงและทรงผมของผู้หญิงยังมีความสำคัญในฐานะที่เป็นองค์ประกอบหนึ่งของการแสดงความเจริญและเอกภาพของชาติ และยังพบด้วยว่า สถานภาพของผู้หญิงและความหมายของความเป็นหญิงในสังคมไทยในช่วงเวลาดังกล่าวไม่ได้ถูกกำหนดและควบคุมโดยผู้ชายหรือชนชั้นนำแต่เพียงอย่างเดียว แต่ผู้หญิงเองก็มีบทบาทสำคัญในการสร้างเสริมสถานภาพของตนและนิยามความเป็นหญิงด้วยเช่นกัน

Recent sales of Canadian military equipment to Saudi Arabia have highlighted a contradiction between Canadian policy on paper and in practice. This dissertation seeks to explain these contradictions by exploring the evolution of Canadian conventional military export policy in the key years between 1946 and 1960. It loosely divides this 15-year span into three periods, which correspond to the genesis of Canadian military export policy (1946-1949), its expansion and formalization (1950-1955), and its first existential challenge (1956-1960). This study aims to show the development of sanitation and hygiene infrastructure in Bandung from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. This research positions sanitation and hygiene infrastructure as part of urban technology that contributes to public welfare. This research used the historical method which consisted of four stages: heuristics, critics, interpretation, and historiography. Results show that sanitation management in Bandung in the early 20th century was conducted by harmonizing technology and natural fortress. This chapter presents a brief history of the discipline and highlights the varied approaches adopted by contributors aligned with medical fields, anthropology and archaeology, and the biochemical sciences, to name a few. Advancements in methods and techniques, the contributions of technology, and the role that social theory plays in the development of hypotheses are discussed along with the importance of acknowledging and ameliorating critical ethical issues inherent to the field.

Though not typically seen as a burgeoning environment for gay life, the Midwest nevertheless has a rich history of queer culture. Focusing on gay activism during the Cold War era, this thesis discusses the rise and influence of homophile organizations in the Midwest. Homophile organizations and the movement's ideals of accommodation and integration played an integral role in the activism coming out of World War II. The homophile movement, though, did not wane with the development of the more radical gay liberation movement. Julius Kambarage Nyerere (1922–1999) was the first president of Tanganyika in 1961 and the founding father of the United Republic of Tanzania, after having merged Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964. He died from leukemia on October 14, 1999, in London. He was 77 years old. Among the most memorable events in the life of Nyerere is his involvement in the struggle for the freedom of African people from foreign influences.

The current study pilot tested a popular music media literacy website that was developed based on the final report of the APA Division 46 Task Force on the Sexualization of Popular Music (2018). The study hypothesized that popular music media literacy education would produce significant differences between the baseline assessment and post-literacy assessment for outcomes related to music reflecting real life, viewing the self as similar to music portrayals, music skepticism, level of engagement with music, and self-reported self-esteem. The use of antibiotics to treat infections revolutionized medicine, but bacteria and fungal pathogens become resistant due to the overuse of these medications. A potential solution is to search for novel antibiotics produced by soil bacteria. Bacteria gene expression patterns, including antibiotic production, are different under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. From the end of Reconstruction to the beginning of World War II, no other ecological change affected as great a part of the southern landscape as the loss of the longleaf pine from the southeastern coastal plain. This dissertation examines the causes and consequences of the species’ disappearance. In the span of just decades, lumber operations and naval stores producers descended upon longleaf pine woodlands with a voracious appetite that greatly contributed to the demise of the pine. This paper presents the results of an indirect assessment of the personality of Empress Wu Zetian, de facto ruler of China from 665 to 705, from the conceptual perspective of personologist Theodore Millon.

Psychodiagnostically relevant data about Empress Wu were collected from biographical sources and media reports and synthesized into a personality profile using the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with DSM-III-R, DSM-IV, and DSM-5.

In this thesis, I investigate how employees of this Latinx-immigrant led nonprofit organization, navigate challenges to both administer service and build community using the model of accompaniment. Historical explorations of tropical heat in a colonial context have largely focussed on two interconnected spheres: colonial perceptions of place and body or, the implications of heat on different bodies in medical thought and practice. This paper seeks to move the discussion towards a history of colonial scientific thought about heat as component of weather and of escalating nature-induced hazards, studied in the observatory or meteorological department. A central theme is to think about heat in its relationship to nascent meso-scale atmospheric knowledge, meteorological theory and, as a by-product of urbanisation and land-use change. This essay situates the history of "the relationship" as a therapeutic technology within the broader context of changing social relations in the twentieth-century United States. More specifically, it outlines the emergence and subsequent diffusion of practices that aim to cultivate a social bond between therapist and patient that may serve as a psychotherapeutic tool. The article highlights the transformations of this technology as its institutional and epistemic foundations became challenged. While the professionalization of medicine in the nineteenth century hinged on community trust, faculty at Southern medical schools hurt their own reputations with their proprietary schools, their public rivalries, and their competition for clinical material and cadavers. Attempts to regulate medical schools also became fodder for doctors to slander each other, all arguing that their methodologies and their schools were superior.
