Talent & Tagging In Harmony : A Study Of Graffiti Art As Subculture And Aesthetic Expression Of Urbanization In Malaysia, Stephen T. F. Poon
Talent & Tagging In Harmony : A Study Of Graffiti Art As Subculture And Aesthetic Expression Of Urbanization In Malaysia, Stephen T. F. Poon
Journal of Urban Culture Research
The purpose of this paper is to discuss contemporary perspectives of street art by examining its influence on urban society and culture. Its research aims to understand social perceptions and awareness towards graffiti art, and how graffiti artists develop a youth subculture through building relationships between street art and the targeted audiences for graffiti. Primary research included interviews with Malaysian graffiti artists. Findings suggest that graffiti art in Malaysia is increasingly accepted as modern representation of cultural idealism through appropriation of local inspirational elements. However, the legitimacy of graffiti art in urban beautification projects is still an unsettled debate, unless …
Benetton’S (In)Equality: A Semiotic Reading, Hianly Muljadi, Sonny Angjaya, Joanna Deborah
Benetton’S (In)Equality: A Semiotic Reading, Hianly Muljadi, Sonny Angjaya, Joanna Deborah
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
United Colors of Benetton, or UCB, has been using its advertisements to deliver positive messages and values that the clothing company represents. This article analyzes one of the photographs in Benetton’s campaign for their Spring Summer Collection of 2018. The campaign, which consists of some photographs by Oliviero Toscani, raises the theme of equality of gender and ethnicity. It shows various photographs of both female and male models from different ethnicities. However, it is found that there is one photograph that shows inconsistency with the very value that Benetton wants to convey through their campaign. Based on the semiotic analysis, …
Pioneers Of Evacuation, Pioneers Of Resettlement: The Photographic Archive Of The Japanese American Incarceration And The Settler Colonial Imaginary, Christina Hobbs
Pioneers Of Evacuation, Pioneers Of Resettlement: The Photographic Archive Of The Japanese American Incarceration And The Settler Colonial Imaginary, Christina Hobbs
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis reexamines the photographic archive of the Japanese American incarceration during World War II produced by the US government, arguing that these images “restage” the evacuation, incarceration, and resettlement periods through a settler colonial “pioneer” mythology, thereby obscuring the precarity of Japanese Americans' racial positionality between “settler” and “native.”

A Parar Para Avanzar: To Stop/To Stand/To Strike To Advance, Christina N. Barrera
Theses and Dissertations
This paper presents the first fragments of a political framework outlining how I situate my work, which lives between “craft” and “art” models of making and between colonized and colonizing traditions. My writing proposes ways of making and being informed by practices, strategies, and organizing that work towards greater autonomy and liberation under these conditions.

Urban Identity Represented By Concept Stores Converted From Machiya In Central Kyoto, Supitsara Intaraksa, Nawit Ongsavangchai
Journal of Urban Culture Research
The city grid plan of Kyoto gave birth to rectangle street blocks and long narrow land plots for the layout of machiya, a traditional townhouse. From the last two decades, many old buildings in Kyoto including machiya were restored for contemporary use as concept store which widely known for its distinctive design that can represent Kyoto's urban features. This research aims to clarify the relationship between modern concept stores and the traditional urban fabric of Kyoto by selecting nine concept stores as case studies to collect data on-site for doing content analysis from their spatial planning to physical design; …
Denouncing Gender Violence In Spain And Rewriting The Female Narrative, Irene Kotyk
Denouncing Gender Violence In Spain And Rewriting The Female Narrative, Irene Kotyk
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This paper analyzes how Spanish female artists across Spain denounce domestic violence by exposing abuse and the culture of women domination in public spaces. Gender violence is important to analyze because it is a current issue in Spain, and globally, as there is a fight for gender equality in countries around the world. Technically speaking, domestic violence includes physical, emotional, and sexual abuse occurring between partners or within a family (Dutton). Recently, many artists across Spain are looking to reconstruct a new narrative for women. This paper will look at how gender-based violence against women was practiced throughout the Spanish …

Roots And Webs And Nets And Branches And Bulletin Boards And Banners And Newsletters And Mutual Aid Text Threads And Kin And Caretakers And Porches And Poems Of Today And Spaces Of Survival, Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo
Theses and Dissertations
As I welcome Richmond, VA into my family, I find myself needing to make roots and webs and nets and branches that ground me, that place myself as a Black, queer, mixed race, artist, activist, educator, storyteller, and cultural worker in this city. I am called to the streets before I am called to my studio. I question what it means to be a part of an institution that is slowly eating this city up. I become a story collector. I need to know where I am and whose land I now call home.
The American Immigrant Experience Through A Photographic Lens, Olivia Sevits
The American Immigrant Experience Through A Photographic Lens, Olivia Sevits
Honors Projects
My goal is to assess how the photographic medium has historically been used to document the American immigrant experience. Then, I will create my own photo book to provide a different perspective and serve as a response to these traditional portrayals. As the granddaughter of Hungarian immigrants and refugees, I often reflect on my grandparents’ experiences and how they impacted my own life.
By researching both traditional and contemporary photographers whose work focused on American immigrants, I can compare how these immigrants were presented through different lenses. With my own photography, my intention is to provide an honest look into …

The Mammy, The Strong, Or The Broken: Politics Of Hair Afrocentricities In Scripted Television, Hayley Blackburn
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
The general literature on the experiences of Black women in America consistently discusses the way that more Afrocentric appearances— whether through skin tone, hairstyles and textures, clothing, language, or a combination of all the above— have been negatively framed throughout cultural and media histories ...
The U.S.–Mexican War: Visualizing Contested Spaces From Parlor To Battlefield, Erika Pazian
The U.S.–Mexican War: Visualizing Contested Spaces From Parlor To Battlefield, Erika Pazian
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The U.S.-Mexican War[1] (1846-1848) was a watershed event that transformed the North American continent politically, socially, and ideologically. With the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, Mexico lost approximately half of its national territory in the north, and the United States acquired the modern states of California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, and portions of Colorado and Wyoming. Both nations were plagued by internal conflicts after the war, and each was plunged into civil war within fifteen years of its conclusion.
During this time of turmoil, Mexican and U.S. artists created and recreated myriad images …
Historical Thinking And Visual Literacy: Exploring The Canadian War Museum With Graphic History, Matthew Barrett
Historical Thinking And Visual Literacy: Exploring The Canadian War Museum With Graphic History, Matthew Barrett
Canadian Military History
This article investigates how graphic history, a visual process which uses different artistic styles, illustrated narratives and comic-page sequential drawing, can contribute to our study and understanding of the past. I examine the theories and practices that underpin this visual approach to scholarship and overview how some academic historians are beginning to embrace graphic histories when conducting historical inquiry, analysis and interpretation. I also address important critiques about the academic rigour, pedagogical value and intellectual foundation of graphic history. I conclude with a graphic article to show how drawing, perspective and artistic techniques can be used to unpack historical concepts …
Miraculous Monstrosity: Birth And Female Sexuality In The Illuminated Scivias And Cloisters Apocalypse, Jenna M. Mckellips
Miraculous Monstrosity: Birth And Female Sexuality In The Illuminated Scivias And Cloisters Apocalypse, Jenna M. Mckellips
Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
This paper compares the illuminations in two medieval apocalypses, the Cloisters Apocalypse and Hildegard von Bingen’s Scivias, to inspect their similar constructions of female sexuality, motherhood, and monstrosity. It first analyzes the monstrosity of female sexual organs found in Hildegard’s portrayal of the Church and the Mother of the Antichrist. The paper then goes on to consider the uncanny slippage between images of birth and death in the Cloisters’s depiction of John and the Woman of Revelation 12. Ultimately, the paper not only explores the monstrosity of female bodies in apocalyptic manuscripts, but also concludes that medieval women’s …
Investigating Resilience Through The Rhetoric Of The Revolution, Leah Danielson
Investigating Resilience Through The Rhetoric Of The Revolution, Leah Danielson
Conspectus Borealis
In this paper, I examine the relationship between Cuba's core values and the rhetoric used by revolutionary leaders. To do so, I frame my paper around two critical questions; how was it that revolutionary leaders created such a deep loyalty to their cause, and in what ways has that loyalty continued today? As such, I will investigate how the rhetorical choices exemplified in linguistic, visual, and other ethnographic observations, collected in a trip to Cuba in 2020, represent a Cuban society that continues these revolutionary characteristics as is carried out through themes of community identity and belongingness, a desire to …

Dressing The Witch: Clothing, The Body, And Accusations Of Witchcraft In Puritan New England, Rachel Murrell
Dressing The Witch: Clothing, The Body, And Accusations Of Witchcraft In Puritan New England, Rachel Murrell
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Though this infamous period in American history has been examined numerous times, this paper aims to analyze the role in which “soft culture,” in particular dress and clothing, played in the search for witches amongst Salem women in 1692. Of necessity to this analysis is a thorough examination of early American material culture and the role in which early New Englanders interacted with newfound notions of materiality. This analysis examines two distinct points of contention at the crux of this cultural turn: the maintenance of and visual adherence to rigid social class standards through clothing and the visual interpretation of …

Plastic Sea : Art Exhibition On Marine Plastic Pollution, Haisang Javanalikhikara
Journal of Urban Culture Research
This paper presents the artistic research and creation of an artwork, exhibited under the title of Plastic Sea. The exhibition was held July 3-11, 2021 at the Art4C Gallery and Creative Learning Space in Bangkok. The name Plastic Sea comes from the idea that most people are aware of marine pollution, especially plastic pollution, yet the issue has normally been ignored because the effects are not immediately experienced in a direct way. To create awareness of the problem of plastic marine pollution, this project aims to show visually the growth of plastic waste in the sea. Research on plastic marine …
Maiden Voyagers: Exhibiting The Autonomy Of Travelling Women To Western Australia, 1818-1830, Toni Church
Maiden Voyagers: Exhibiting The Autonomy Of Travelling Women To Western Australia, 1818-1830, Toni Church
Theses
My thesis appraises critical problems of current museum practice concerning women, particularly interpretations of the physical female form and autonomous behaviours, through a wide-ranging field work study and in-depth analysis of recent Australian museum exhibitions and surveys of international exhibitions online. A working understanding of New Museology and empathetic museum practice was derived from this fieldwork experience and complemented by an academic study of museological theory to formulate future museum best practices. The second part of the thesis critiques written records and other artefacts to investigate autonomous behaviours in the experiences of European women who travelled to Western Australia in …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The twentieth century was a century of scientific and technological development. Especially the fact of information and communication technologies, beyond being a technological leap, has led to different levels of development and changes / transformations. Therefore, developments, possibilities, changes and problems emerging in the Internet and other digital contexts have attracted the attention of communication scientists, sociologists, historians and philosophers, and have become a field of research that leads to interdisciplinary studies. Along with the mass media developed for the last two centuries (from the spread of newspapers to the invention of the internet), every social development or transformation is …

Is That Media Literacy?: Israeli And Us Media Scholars’ Perceptions Of The Field, Ornat Turin, Yonty Friesem
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Sixty-nine media scholars from Israel and the Unites States responded to an online questionnaire aimed to identify the boundaries of media literacy. The participants received a list of thirty-two potential titles for a final paper and were asked to rate the relevancy of each topic for an undergraduate media literacy course. While the statistical analysis showed no significant difference in the ranking, deviations and distributions demonstrate disagreements as to what is important or marginal in the field. Protectionist topics were ranked high as well as topics involving children, digital media, and popular culture. It also appears that media education has …
Voices On The Horizon: A Theory Of Ludic Rhetoric, Jeff Lohr
Voices On The Horizon: A Theory Of Ludic Rhetoric, Jeff Lohr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Voices on the horizon: A theory of ludic rhetoric begins with the assumption that rhetoric and play offer hope for cooperation and community in a fragmented and divided world. Rhetoric and play share an intellectual trajectory in the history of ideas. The earliest use of the terms rhetor and rhetoric in the Western tradition encouraged playful cooperation. The move toward reason and science during the Enlightenment relegated rhetoric to mere techniques for persuasion and silenced alternative avenues for seeking truth. Reclaiming traditional rhetoric as a meeting place for potential negotiation and cooperation encourages constructive civic discourse. The conclusion of this …

The exhibition includes portraits peering down from above, illuminated by projected patterns and manipulated messages from Nike’s “Equality.” (2017). The purpose of this thesis paper is to describe the elements of identity, marginalization, and personal reaction to advertising, as well as the and theories which have shaped this project. …
