Ncaa Basketball, Baseball, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Two of my favorite groups have been quite active over the past few days: the baseball owners and the NCAA. As usual the activity involved a malfunction of gray matter.

Tennis, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

What ever happened to tennis, "The Sport of the Seventies?" It was all the rage. The names of the great players were known universally: King, Court, Evert, McEnroe, Borg, Ashe and Connors. After every big television tennis weekend you couldn't get a court in a public park without a two-hour wait. If you played in the big private venues, well you might be able to get a court at 2 a.m. on Wednesday or Thursday, but you couldn't expect much else.

World Wrestling Federation, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

What is the relationship of the World Wrestling Federation to sport? What is its relationship to other video games in the time of our video war, appearing daily on the news channels that cry out for our twenty-four attention?

The Decline Of The Magic And The Nba In Transition, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

This past week has been a difficult one for Orlando Magic fans. After going through a short season in reasonably good style the Magic went out of the playoffs in short shrift. This was not only a sign that the Magic have major problems they must face in the weeks ahead, but it also was one of many indications that in the post-Michael NBA major changes are taking place.

In Memoriam Joe Dimaggio, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

I met a man today who claims he once saw Joe DiMaggio drop a fly ball. In a game. I didn't know whether to believe him or not. Then he told me that Joe hit a 10th inning home run to win the game. This gave the story a modicum of credibility. Yes, I suppose it could have happened.

John Elway, Richard C. Crepeau May 1999

John Elway, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

I have a friend who was at Stanford at the same time as John Elway. He too was an athlete but not in one of the high profile money sports. Over the years he has come to detest John Elway especially the Denver quarterback's success. My friend claims that with every million dollars and every big game victory, Elway is making him look bad. My friend is yet to win a big game or make a million, although he continues to have hope for the lottery.

Columbine And Jock Culture, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

If you are like me you are already weary, or just wary, of the endless analysis of the Colorado high school shootout that have blanketed the media over the past few days. The cable news networks seem to have found something worthy of their attention now that they no longer have Bill and Monica, and have become bored with the video game war in Serbia.

A Tribute To Wayne Gretsky, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Wayne Gretzky’s retirement marks the end of the career of one of the greatest sports stars of the century and the greatest hockey player of all time. A list of his achievements is mind boggling: Nine Hart Trophies as regular season MVP all in the 1980s; Two Conn Symthe Trophies as MVP in the Stanley Cup Playoffs; Five times the winner of Lester Pearson Award given to the outstanding player as voted by the players; Four Time Lady Bing Trophy winner as most gentlemanly player. He is the owner of over sixty NHL career records including goals (894), assists (1962) …

Carlos And Smith, Black Protest, And The Black Athlete, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

On of the most indelible images of sport in the Sixties was the picture of Tommy Smith and John Carlos standing on the victory podium with their black gloved fist salute during the playing of the American national anthem. That image returned to me this past week when ESPN presented a three-part series on the social role of the Black Athlete.

ESPN is calling it their "blow out the budget coverage." FOX promises that this will be the biggest presentation ever with over seven hours of pre-game programming. A thirty-second advertising spot will cost a $1.6M which comes to a mere $53,333 per second and represents a 28% increase over last year's bargain rates.

Olympic Scandal, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

What was being called the Salt Lake City Olympic Scandal and is now clearly the all-world Olympic Scandal is a shock to very few people. Rumors, newspaper articles, and books have all previously raised these issues including some of the more spectacular details. I have in the back of my mind the recollection of a charge that an Olympic official was given a heart transplant, perhaps for a relative, by world renowned heart surgeon Michael DeBakey.

The Bcs, Fairness, And The Money, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Everyone now knows what the "BS" in the "BCS" stands for but there seems to be some doubt remaining about the "C." Some suggest "computer," some say "compound," some say it is a redundant statement of the "S." Whatever it is, several other things are now clear.

College And Pro Athletes: Crime And Punishment, Richard C. Crepeau Nov 1998

College And Pro Athletes: Crime And Punishment, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

There have been headlines over the past week about crime statistics from the National Football League. Jeff Benedict and Don Yaeger in their new book, Pros and Cons: The Criminals Who Play in the NFL, claim that one in five (21%) of all the players in the NFL have been charged with at least one serious crime. Among these are two murders, seven rape charges, 45 counts of domestic violence and 42 charges of assault. What is worse, say Yaeger and Benedict, the National Football League continues to employ these kinds of people at huge salaries and the NFL seems …

Terry Bowden Gone: Coaches, Boosters And Trustees A Dealy Mix, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The intercollegiate athletic forces are at it again and as usual the action comes from the king of college sport, football. At Auburn, one of the NCAA's more problematic programs, Terry Bowden is gone as the head football coach of Auburn's beloved Tigers. As we have come to expect there is nothing simple about the disappearance of a head coach in the heartland of college football.

The Nba Lockout And The Players, Richard C. Crepeau Oct 1998

The Nba Lockout And The Players, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It has been a difficult week as I try to cope with the realization that the Atlanta Braves are in the tank, the Yankees are about to finish the job of obliterating the field, and a group of psychiatrists has determined that Mike Tyson is not the boy next door. These matters have weighed heavily on my soul while I watch the NBA sliding into suicidal mode.

Demanding Perfection From Umpires:Why?, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

There was Chuck Knoblauch standing at first base holding an umpiring clinic for Ted Hendry during the 12th inning of game two of the ALCS. Chuck now admits, "I should have went and got the ball." When the Texas A&M English major failed to went, the runners did went, and were quickly gone, with Enrique Wilson circling the bases and scoring the go-ahead run.

"Flo Jo" And Performance-Enhancing Drugs, Richard C. Crepeau Oct 1998

"Flo Jo" And Performance-Enhancing Drugs, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The death of Florence Griffith Joyner has been on my mind now for almost two weeks as I consider what I might say about it, if anything. Having commented on drugs and sport in connection with the Tour de France in July and advocating an opening of sport to the use of all drugs, Flo Jo's death brought me back to those comments for further consideration.

One Of The Greatest Baseball Seasons In My Lifetime, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Everyone is saying it and so I am hesitant to say it too, but I will. This has been a great baseball season and maybe the best of my lifetime, and it continued into an extra day.

The 1906 Cubs And Their Times:The Winningest Team In Mlb History, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Among the less frequently discussed records being pursued across the diamond landscape these days is the single season wins record. Ninety-two years ago, in 1906, the Chicago Cubs, - yes, the Chicago Cubs - set the single season record for most wins at 116 games. The Yankees recent mini-slump has diminished their chances of reaching that lofty height but they still have an outside shot at it.

The Year Of Mark Mcgwire, Richard C. Crepeau Sep 1998

The Year Of Mark Mcgwire, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It is over. There is a new single season home run king of all the major leagues. The records of Maris and Ruth and Wilson have fallen and Mark McGwire is at the top of list in both leagues. He has in fact demolished the record with home runs of, shall we say it, "Ruthian proportions."

Sport, The Asterisk, And Peds, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The Ghost of Ford Frick has been seen lurking around the baseball diamonds these days ready to bestow an asterisk on some record setting player. Urged on by his fellow members of the fourth estate the Ghost of Frick may visit us again with an abomination on the order of his asterisk of 1961. To do so today would make no more sense than it did then.

The Ohio State University is regarded by the people of that state and its alumni, as well as by many across the country, as one of the great state universities in America. Its educational and research reputation has grown over the past several decades, and it has arrived at a place of leadership in many academic disciplines.

The Summer Sports Scene In England: A Report And A Comparison, Richard C. Crepeau Aug 1998

The Summer Sports Scene In England: A Report And A Comparison, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Spending three weeks in England during July at the climax of the World Cup and Wimbledon, and all of the British Open, I was able to see the English sporting scene operating on all cylinders. Some clear differences with the American sporting culture caught my eye.
