The Mosquito Fleet's Guides And The Second Seminole War, George E. Buker Dec 2021

The Mosquito Fleet's Guides And The Second Seminole War, George E. Buker

Florida Historical Quarterly

The significance of the navy’s role in the Second Seminole War has often been overlooked, especially its impact upon the Seminole nation through the many naval canoe expeditions into the Everglades during the last years of the war. Yet the fact remains that these incursions caused the Seminole people to break up their their war bands and resort to small family groups to avoid the pursuing sailors and marines. Such dispersal destroyed the Indians’ ability to maintain an effective military posture against the United States forces in southern Florida. Once the navy obtained proficient guides who were knowledgeable about the …

William Edwards And The Historic University Of Florida Campus: A Photographic Essay, Stephen Kerber

Florida Historical Quarterly

The University of Florida officially dates its birth to the founding of the East Florida Seminary in 1853, but the university has really existed in its present form only since 1905. In that year the Florida legislature passed the Buckman Act (named for state Representative Henry H. Buckman, its main author), which consolidated the colleges, seminaries, and institutes receiving state support.

Helen Hunt West: Florida's Pioneer For Era, James R. Mcgovern

Florida Historical Quarterly

Since Florida's postion on the Equal Rights Amendment is considered critical in the interim remaining before the time limit for the amendment expires in 1979, it would seem particularly relevant to examine the historical roots of ERA in Florida. To do so is to unfurl the purple, gold, and white banner of the National Woman’s Party (NWP), the only organization which proposed ERA nationally in 1923 and which alone effectively propagandized on its behalf until the 1960s, and to focus on the activities of one of its key members, Helen Hunt West of Jacksonville.

Florida Historical Quarterly

Twelve-mile Swamp lies northwest of St. Augustine between Interstate 95 and U.S. Highway 1, the old King’s Road. The heavily wooded swamp, named for its approximate distance from St. Augustine, is a forbidding area of cypress bogs and palmetto thickets. The swamp has probably changed little since 1812 when, in one violent half-hour, it became the focal point of an extraordinary, undeclared military contest between the United States and Spain.

Difficult History Education Via Design-Based Research: Teaching Historical Empathy Using Lucie Aubrac And The French Resistance As A Case Study, Sahar Eissa Dec 2021

Difficult History Education Via Design-Based Research: Teaching Historical Empathy Using Lucie Aubrac And The French Resistance As A Case Study, Sahar Eissa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Technology-enhanced learning environments (TELEs) are educational tools that enable students to acquire knowledge, improving the quality of their educational experience. Educators face many challenges when teaching difficult histories about French resisters in World War II, such as Lucie Aubrac. Resisters' histories include deep emotions, choices, and hard decisions. There is a need for a new approach for teaching these topics and designing innovative digital tools to encourage educators and students to explore them. The current study designs and evaluates a TELE to teach difficult history via a historical empathy approach that engages students with difficult histories and provides them with …

How “Interested” Criticism Fueled The Formulation Of Nineteen Eighty-Four’S Cultural Afterlife, John Cameron Bosch Dec 2021

How “Interested” Criticism Fueled The Formulation Of Nineteen Eighty-Four’S Cultural Afterlife, John Cameron Bosch

All Theses

George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four carries a “cultural afterlife” as a result of “interested” criticism, which has a set political/practical barometer or motive. While everyone agrees that the novel presents a frightening dystopia, many also consider it a prophetic piece that illuminates the possible corruption of executive power of a nation thanks to this cultural afterlife; the modern and popular term “Orwellian” resulted from these sorts of analyses and have only escalated in the years since its inception. As a result, within the past decade, multiple scholars, analysts, and journalists have referenced Orwell’s novel as a factual representation of this executive …

Artist And Patron Relationships: Social Power Dynamics In Renaissance Italy, Katherine E. Siegler Dec 2021

Artist And Patron Relationships: Social Power Dynamics In Renaissance Italy, Katherine E. Siegler

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

In historical discourse, one of the main discussions that can be found is in relation to determining who holds power in social and political environments. The world of art in Renaissance Italy is a place where such power dynamics were of great importance. My thesis examines social power dynamics in the artist-patron relationship in Renaissance Italy in order to discern who held power in these complex bonds and how such relationships influenced and impacted Renaissance society at large. This work is divided into two units. The first unit provides examples and arguments that maintain that the patron was the main …

[Dis]Assembling Race: The Fepc In Oklahoma, 1941-1946, Arley Ward

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

On the World War II home front in Oklahoma the Fair Employment Practice Committee (FEPC) succeeded in securing defense jobs for African Americans. The efforts of the committee, The Oklahoma Eagle, the Oklahoma City Black Dispatch, and the State Conference of Branches of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) advanced civil rights in Oklahoma throughout World War II and beyond. The efforts of the FEPC in Oklahoma connect civil rights efforts in the 1940s directly to Brown v Board of Education, (1954) and the classic civil rights movement.

The current study sought to expand upon the Giscombé Superwoman Schema (2010) specifically exploring the role of vulnerability resistance and help obligation as potential barriers to changing comprehensive self-care health commitments in self-identifying Strong Black Women (SBW). The Superwoman Schema characteristics of vulnerability resistance and help obligation along with socio-economic factors of income, religious affiliation and marital status were assessed in the project using a visual-ethnography approach to Photo Voice methods and five intergenerational focus groups of SBW's born between 1946 and 2002. The collective self-care knowledge of these eighteen participants was analyzed using a participatory action research discussion framework …

Organizational Culture: An Examination Of The Role Of Leadership In Neutralizing The Negative Effects Of Technostress During Operational Shifts, David P. Kirkland

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

COVID-19 created a support problem for public universities across the United States and required that IT departments and professionals alter how they performed in 2020, and perhaps beyond. IT professionals tasked with safeguarding large amounts of data were required to shift to a teleworking posture to continue offering a similar level of service as previously expected. In addition to the technological shift that organizations experienced because of COVID-19, leadership challenges also impacted IT departments across the United States. The rapid shift of operational duties has the propensity to increase technology-related stress, due to employee perception of being successful in their …

Ad Infinitum: The Bourgeois Construction Of An American Lady, Miriam M. Cepeda Dec 2021

Ad Infinitum: The Bourgeois Construction Of An American Lady, Miriam M. Cepeda

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the emergence of the Bourgeois culture in Antebellum America during the transition of nineteenth century America into what we refer to as “modern-day America.” This period is crucial in American history as ideological concepts developed as the nation industrialized, thus creating the nation’s identity. In doing so, gender roles were voraciously prescribed with a focus on women’s sexuality as a focal point for Victorian discourse. Unlike prior to the Revolution, which gender roles were previously assumed, by the mid-nineteenth century, modes of surveillance are apparent in sermons, medical treatises, Victorian periodicals and literature, in which ideological productions …

Many Words, Many Turds: Middle English Proverbial Wisdom And The Alleged Incontinence Of Female Speech, Mary C. Flannery Dec 2021

Many Words, Many Turds: Middle English Proverbial Wisdom And The Alleged Incontinence Of Female Speech, Mary C. Flannery

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

In a passage from The Castle of Perseverance, the reprehensible Malus Angelus dismisses the speech of the personified virtues who are attempting to lead mankind to salvation: ‘Ther wymmen arn, are many wordys. (…) Ther ges syttyn are many tordys’ (2649-51). As the quotation illustrates, likening someone’s words to turds is both an effective brush-off and a colourful insult. This particular insult derives its force from the familiar anti-feminist trope of the voluble woman: like women, the wicked angel implies, the female personifications of virtue talk too much, and the incontinence of their speech is presented in terms that …

Transforming Community: Women’S Rape Narratives And Gower’S Confessio Amantis, Jennifer Garrison Dec 2021

Transforming Community: Women’S Rape Narratives And Gower’S Confessio Amantis, Jennifer Garrison

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

Despite its reputation as socially and politically conservative, John Gower’s fourteenth-century Confessio Amantis highlights sexual violence against women as a central cultural injustice and presents women’s rape narratives as a potentially powerful force for social and political change. This essay focuses on three of Gower’s tales in which women tell their own rape narratives with dramatic and lasting consequences: Mundus and Paulina, Tarquin and Lucrece, and Tereus and Philomena. In all three instances, these women’s narratives of suffering are socially transformative precisely because they threaten the masculine chivalric ideal. For Gower, rape is a direct result of the cultural belief …

"A Year Of Monkey War": The Anti-Evolution Campaign And The Florida Legislature, Mary Duncan France

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the summer of 1925, the world focused its attention on the sleepy town of Dayton, Tennessee, the site of the “Monkey Trial” of John T. Scopes. William Jennings Bryan, former secretary of state and the nation’s most zealous fundamentalist, and Clarence Darrow, the most famous trial attorney of his time, were the real antagonists, as they argued over the issue of the teaching of evolution. Both sides battled as if each believed the trial would produce the definitive statement on God and the creation of man.

"Sporting Life On The Line": Prostitution In Progressive Era Pensacola, James R. Mcgovern

Florida Historical Quarterly

In our own time, when rapid changes in attitudes toward sexual morality are conversational coin, it is interesting to consider an experiment in the regulation of morals devised in Pensacola, Florida, in the early years of the twentieth century. As a port city, Pensacola responded historically to the sexual desires of large numbers of male transients by noteworthy permissiveness. The city displayed a similarly liberal attitude towards the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

The Case Of Tom Tiger's Horse: An Early Foray Into Indian Rights, Harry A. Kersey, Jr. Nov 2021

The Case Of Tom Tiger's Horse: An Early Foray Into Indian Rights, Harry A. Kersey, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

At a time in our national history when the American Indian’s claim to social and political justice is being vigorously pursued, and dramatically portrayed through mass media coverage of incidents such as the occupation of Alcatraz, disruption at the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington, and a “Second Wounded Knee,” it might be well to consider in calmer retrospective one of those little known efforts to secure Indian rights which occurred in Florida at the turn of the century. The participants included an aggrieved Seminole headman of the Cow Creek band and his white friends who displayed an unusual zeal …

Nineteenth- And Twentieth-Century Readings Of The Medieval Orient: Other Encounters, Liliana Sikorska Nov 2021

Nineteenth- And Twentieth-Century Readings Of The Medieval Orient: Other Encounters, Liliana Sikorska

Research in Medieval and Early Modern Culture

Travel narratives and historical works shaped the perception of Muslims and the East in the Victorian and post-Victorian periods. Analyzing the discourses on Muslims which originated in the European Middle Ages, the first part of this book discusses the troubled legacy of the encounters between the East and the West and locates the nineteenth-century texts concerning the Saracens and their lands in the liminal space between history and fiction.

Drawing on the nineteenth-century models, the second part of the book looks at fictional and non-fictional works of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century which re-established the “Oriental obsession,” stimulating …
