Inner Martyrdom: Deconstructing The Sacrificial Female Subject In Post-Soviet Georgia, Gvantsa Gasviani Jan 2022

Inner Martyrdom: Deconstructing The Sacrificial Female Subject In Post-Soviet Georgia, Gvantsa Gasviani

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

This article analyzes the 2017 film, My Happy Family, and how it depicts the archetypical Georgian woman and the sacrifices she is required to make for the family and, by extension, the nation. In doing so, I explore the socio-historical construction of the ideal woman and the ways women resist gendered demands, often through unseen means. Scholars have explored the cultural politics of “postsocialism,” analyzing the “New Woman” archetype in relation to class, sexuality, and labor. Finding that many neglect issues of women’s own socio-psychic negotiation of the postsocialist terrain, I argue that we must investigate more closely the production …

Does "Good" Mean White?: Understanding The Complexities Of Refugee Resettlement In Bowling Green, Kentucky, Molly Shaddix

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Bowling Green, Kentucky is a relatively small town comparable to its counterparts across the South. However, Bowling Green has a significant population of refugee inhabitants that have resettled in waves since the late 1970s. This paper describes the lived experience of refugees resettling by analyzing community action and troubles faced while working for independence in their new homes. Some factors explored are access to affordable housing, language barriers, and trouble in education. In addition, this paper contextualizes their lived experiences with other resettlement communities across the United States to understand how Bowling Green fits into patterns of societal xenophobia, racism, …

Exploring 3d Data Reuse And Repurposing Through Procedural Modeling, Rachel Opitz, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Karin Dalziel, Jessica Dussault, Greg Tunink Jan 2022

Exploring 3d Data Reuse And Repurposing Through Procedural Modeling, Rachel Opitz, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Karin Dalziel, Jessica Dussault, Greg Tunink

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Most contemporary 3D data used in archaeological research and heritage management have been created through ‘reality capture,’ the recording of the physical features of extant archaeological objects, structures, and landscapes using technologies such as laser scanning and photogrammetry (Garstki 2020, ch.2; Magnani et al. 2020). A smaller quantity of data are generated by Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) projects, and even fewer data are generated through procedural modeling, the rapid prototyping of multi-component threedimensional (3D) models from a set of rules (Figure 8.1.). It is unsurprising therefore that in archaeology and heritage, efforts around digital 3D …

Left To Blind Destruction: An Exploration Of Post-Punk Britain Through The Lens Of Manchester's Own Joy Division (1973-1980), Emily Wingfield

Capstone Showcase

This thesis explores the UK post-punk movement, looking at how the movement emerged within the political and social climate of 1970s and early 1980s Britain and the key characteristics of the genre. I also provide a deeper exploration of the movement through a case study of Joy Division. The central questions within my research are: What was the social and political climate of Britain during the 1970s and 1980s? How did this influence the emergence of the post-punk movement? What are the complexities and nuances of Joy Division and its place in the Manchester music scene? How do these earn …

Technology And Music Production In Different Genres : Key Issues For A Significant Music Education, Adrien Faure-Carvallo, Diego Calderón-Garrido, Maria Del Mar SuáRez

Journal of Urban Culture Research

This research stems from the assumption that knowing how sound technology works, as well as its features and limitations, can help us better understand the mainstream music styles and genres of the last decades. Consequently, the evolution of music recording is explored through a grounded analysis based on both published documents and on interviews with currently active music producers who are specialists in urban pop music, with the aim to collect enough data to support the need to increase the presence of sound technology in the teaching plans of Compulsory Secondary Education. After the data analysis, several didactic proposals are …

Ar-Sculptures : Issues Of Technological Creation, Their Artistic Significance And Uniqueness, Tetiana Sovhyra

Journal of Urban Culture Research

The threat of the Covid-19 epidemic quickly influenced the development of remote working tools using modern IT technologies. This has led to the emergence of a significant number of cultural practices for remote (virtual) use. Among them are experimental attempts to create volumetric virtual models that could be considered sculptures. At the same time, these developments have served the emergence of culturological problems: solving questions of uniqueness, artistic significance of works of this kind. In this regard, this article provides the results of a scientific study of the specifics of creating virtual sculptures, authorship issues and artistic significance of virtual …

Visual Game Character Design To Engage Generation Z In An Effort To Develop Anti-Corruption Behavior In Indonesian Society, Eva Y, Noversar Jamarun Ms, Ari Leo B3, Cameron Malik Jan 2022

Visual Game Character Design To Engage Generation Z In An Effort To Develop Anti-Corruption Behavior In Indonesian Society, Eva Y, Noversar Jamarun Ms, Ari Leo B3, Cameron Malik

Journal of Urban Culture Research

This article aims to discuss the visual design of characters in a digital game about corruption and is intended to raise awareness of the danger of it for the Z generation. A visual character "in-game" is a better vehicle for spreading an anti-corruption message as each character has a different background and storyline representing their role and skills in a mission. The character, especially the villain figure, is based on a true story of a corruption case with a bit of modification, to make the message more easily absorbed by Gen Z players in Indonesia. Moreover, the main character in …

The Transformative Power Of Fashion Within Beauty Pageants : The Case Of “Ghana’S Most Beautiful”, Scholastica Wompakeah Azuah, Ebenezer Kofi Howard, Benjamin Kwablah Asinyo Jan 2022

The Transformative Power Of Fashion Within Beauty Pageants : The Case Of “Ghana’S Most Beautiful”, Scholastica Wompakeah Azuah, Ebenezer Kofi Howard, Benjamin Kwablah Asinyo

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Pageants can be competitions for ladies with qualities of beauty determined by societal values and norms. In pageants’ orientation toward continuous change, they tend to achieve results through the engagement of fashion; the most visible medium of change found in aesthetics, culture and social events. Ghana's Most Beautiful Pageant’s engagement in traditional fashion has chalked up many successes. However, since its inception 15 years ago, little has been assessed on its transformative power. An exploratory sequential design was employed with a population comprised of viewers, fashion designers, organizers, judges, traditional rulers and contestants. Purposive sampling was used in selecting categories …

10 Year Anniversary Issue, Editor-In-Chief Gvjh

Grand Valley Journal of History

In celebration, this edition reminisces on the earlier works of the Grand Valley Journal of History, as this year marks the 10 year anniversary of the journal’s inception. This special collection highlights the considerable growth of the journal over the past decade by compiling an article from volumes one through seven that best represents Zeitgeist, or the “spirit of the times.” Our editors' notes have a common theme of noticing how some perspectives of historical events and cultural ideas have stayed the same, while others have shifted. By looking back into history, we can see that the spirit of the …

Housewives To Heroines: Continuing Education For Women At The University Of Kentucky, 1964-1988, Allison L. Elliott Jan 2022

Housewives To Heroines: Continuing Education For Women At The University Of Kentucky, 1964-1988, Allison L. Elliott

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation

Beginning in the early 1960s, the movement for the continuing education for women (CEW) brought together a seemingly unlikely alliance of American activists, educators, philanthropists, and government agencies. Fueled by philanthropic funds, accelerated by the quest for “womanpower” to bolster national defense, and aligned with regional workforce needs as well as the personal goals of individual women, CEW programs pioneered new models of academic advising and student support that continue to influence higher education practitioners today. By studying the experiences of both administrators and students involved with CEW at the University of Kentucky, this study sheds light on how one …

Robert Lenkiewicz: Witchcraft Collector, Ashley M. Hood Jan 2022

Robert Lenkiewicz: Witchcraft Collector, Ashley M. Hood

Provenance and Preservation

In 2018, Portland State University purchased a medieval codex containing a 1490 printing of Werner Rolewinck’s Fasciculus Temporum and a 1490 edition of the Malleus Maleficarum printed in Speier, Germany, by Peter Drach. Based on information from the bookseller in France, PSU has concluded that the codex most likely came from the collection of Robert Lenkiewicz (1941-2002), a twentieth-century English figurative painter who amassed a significant collection of rare books and incunables during his life.

Lenkiewicz’s artwork, interests, and book collection revolved around addiction and fanaticism, and one of the more noteworthy sections of his library focused on witchcraft and …

In terms of internal factors, students' interests, risk appetite, and awareness of the importance of Chinese language have a significant impact on their attitude towards learning Chinese language. On the other hand, the study also identified external factors, including teaching content, students' …

Rural Older Adults’ Wellbeing During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Christina Clevenger Jan 2022

Rural Older Adults’ Wellbeing During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Christina Clevenger

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Recent studies reveal adults 65 and over are living longer, healthier lives than ever before. However, this older generation is often vulnerable to exclusion, marginalization, and discrimination, made worse by the events and circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic brought unprecedented challenges and disproportionate threats to the integrity and wellbeing of older adults, especially those living in rural communities. Nonetheless, little is known about the effects the pandemic had on rural older adults’ wellbeing. This generic qualitative study explored rural older adults’ wellbeing during the pandemic, using the theoretical frameworks of Erikson’s stage theory of psychosocial development and Seligman's …

National Identity And Civil War Memory In The American South: How History, Ideology, And Media Inform The Culture Wars Of The Late Twentieth Century, John Lancaster Jan 2022

National Identity And Civil War Memory In The American South: How History, Ideology, And Media Inform The Culture Wars Of The Late Twentieth Century, John Lancaster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

On Veterans Day weekend, 1994, the remains of a Confederate soldier named Lewis Powell were reinterred in a cemetery in Geneva, Florida and given military honors. This thesis begins by historicizing Powell's burial ceremony to the final decades of the twentieth century to argue for new ways of viewing and understanding how Americans engaged with Civil War memory and legacy at a time of particularly felt social and cultural change. The 'culture wars' of the 1980s and 1990s describe the many battles and debates fought over issues as wide-ranging as race, politics, gender, sexuality, religion, and education, and were often …

What Is The Sound Of Holiness? The Regulation Of Sound And Silence In Early Medieval Monastic Communities, 600-900, Melissa Kapitan Jan 2022

What Is The Sound Of Holiness? The Regulation Of Sound And Silence In Early Medieval Monastic Communities, 600-900, Melissa Kapitan

Theses and Dissertations--History

This dissertation explores how the regulation of sound and silence in the early medieval monastery formed a distinct soundscape imbued with personal, communal, and theological resonances. More narrowly, this investigation focuses on the Frankish empire of the ninth century, which saw a series of monastic reforms led by the Carolingian royal family and ecclesiastical figures and consolidated in imperial legislation and treatises on the monastic life.

These ninth-century reforms witnessed not only the promotion of a single rule and custom to guide monastic life, but also a great flowering of liturgical texts, including the earliest treatises on musical theory. These …

Flawed Judgment: The Prolonged Failure Of Handschu V. Special Services Division, 1971-2022, Henry A. Burby

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis explores Handschu v. Special Services Division, an ongoing federal class-action suit brought by New York activists in 1971 to challenge the NYPD's right to use covert tactics to monitor them and undermine their political projects. The Handschu plaintiffs originally hoped that the court would find the NYPD's covert activities unconstitutional and would intervene on behalf of all New Yorkers thus targeted. After the conservative Burger Court challenged the pro-activist decisions of the previous Warren Court, the plaintiffs abandoned their ambitious goals and settled with the defendants. The Handschu defendants easily sidelined this settlement in the wake of the …

Snapshots Of A Fictional Past: Photographic Nostalgia In The Early 20th Century Art Novel., Harry A. Jones Iv

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation I argue that the proliferation of a mass codependent relationship with nostalgia in the twentieth century shares a parallel history with the widespread adoption of the reproducible image being used by collective audiences as a supplement for natural memory, or what Proust names “voluntary memory.” This conflict between nostalgia-hungry consumers and artists inspired groups such as Alfred Stieglitz’s Photo-Secessionists and artistically minded authors like Henry James, who employed increasingly complex photographic and literary practices to resist the images’ tendency to debase the aesthetic quality of their own work. Authors such as Marcel Proust and William Faulkner used …

Kokoro: Hints And Echoes Of Japanese Inner Life, Lafcadio Hearn, Koizumi Yakumo Jan 2022

Kokoro: Hints And Echoes Of Japanese Inner Life, Lafcadio Hearn, Koizumi Yakumo

Zea E-Books Collection

The works of Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) played a critical role in introducing his adopted Japan to a worldwide audience. In Kokoro: Hints and Echoes of Japanese Inner Life, he writes, “The papers composing this volume treat of the inner rather than of the outer life of Japan, — for which reason they have been grouped under the title Kokoro (heart). This word signifies also mind, in the emotional sense; spirit; courage; resolve; sentiment; affection; and inner meaning, — just as we say in English, ‘the heart of things.’” After centuries of isolation Meiji-era Japan was forced to adjust …
