The Newbury Prayer Bill Hoax: Devotion And Deception In New England's Era Of Great Awakenings, Douglas L. Winiarski
The Newbury Prayer Bill Hoax: Devotion And Deception In New England's Era Of Great Awakenings, Douglas L. Winiarski
Religious Studies Faculty Publications
[...] [T]he “Tappin manuscript,” as I refer to it in the essay that follows, presents an intriguing puzzle. If Christopher Toppan did not compose the unusual prayer request, then who did? When? Why? Solving the riddle of the Tappin manuscript leads us into the troubled final years of one of New England’s most pugnacious ministers and the evangelical underworld of the Great Awakening that he had come to despise.
Liturgical Celebrations With Emotional Expectations In Auxerre, 840-908, Thomas A. Greene
Liturgical Celebrations With Emotional Expectations In Auxerre, 840-908, Thomas A. Greene
Dissertations
Scholars traditionally date the origin of "affective piety" to the late-eleventh century. The place of emotions in early medieval devotional activity, therefore, has yet to be properly acknowledged. Based on exegetical and homiletic material written at the monastery of Saint-Germain (Auxerre) between 840 and 908, I argue that liturgical celebrations were to take place in a context suffused with both the experience and expression of emotions.
Religion In The Age Of Enlightenment: Putting John Wesley In Context, Jeremy Gregory
Religion In The Age Of Enlightenment: Putting John Wesley In Context, Jeremy Gregory
Religion in the Age of Enlightenment
Wesley's long life ( 1703-91) spanned almost the whole of the eighteenth century, and any attempt to understand him undoubtedly needs to include some sense of the period in which he lived. There have, of course, been many attempts to evoke Wesley's context, whether broadly defined-as in the thousands of books and scholarly articles that have been written about the era in general, ranging from the economy, politics, and society to cultural, intellectual, and religious matters (and much else besides), or in the various studies that have more directly positioned Wesley, and early Methodism, within his, and its, time. Most …

Sermon Publishing, Clerical Reading, And John Wilkins's Ecclesiastes, 1646-1750, Rosemary Dixon
Religion in the Age of Enlightenment
Francis Bacon had little to say about the study of divinity in The Advancement of Learning (1605), his critical survey of the state of knowledge at the turn of the seventeenth century. In contrast to the other fields of learning Bacon explored, divinity needed but little encouragement: "For I can finde no space or ground that lieth vacant and vnsowne in the matter of Diuinitie, so diligent haue men beene, either in sowing of good seede, or in sowing of Tares:' Bacon did, however, have an intriguing suggestion for a hypothetical theological book:
that forme of writing in Diuinitie, which …

Masculinity In The Reformation Era, Edited By Scott H. Hendrix And Susan C. Karant-Nunn, Fiona Williamson
Masculinity In The Reformation Era, Edited By Scott H. Hendrix And Susan C. Karant-Nunn, Fiona Williamson
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This collection broaches relatively uncharted waters. Drawing on the legacy of postrevisionist gender history, it investigates how sixteenth-century societies shaped masculine identity within a normative framework of Christian social ideals. The collection arose from the observation that until recently there has been a disinclination to explore the history of masculinity, but more specifically, masculine religious identity. Idealsprovide the baseline for the collection, but the essays go beyond this, focusing on the practice, rather than the theory, and as such, provide a nuanced and intelligent dialogue offering a tantalising glimpse of the diversity of masculine experiences. Introducing the book, Hendrix and …

Putting On The Garment Of Widowhood: Medieval Widows, Monastic Memory, And Historical Writing, Katherine Clark
Putting On The Garment Of Widowhood: Medieval Widows, Monastic Memory, And Historical Writing, Katherine Clark
Quidditas
The idea of the widow in communal memory and historical writing was a resonant and multi-faceted concept for monastic writers of the Middle Ages. This essay focuses on the function and meaning of widowhood in two examples of early medieval historical writing, by one male and one female author, to illustrate how monastic authors engaged significant and enduring aspects of widowhood during the Western European Middle Ages to construct institutional histories. Images of female memory and widowed piety (especially because the widow represented the Church who awaited her spouse, Christ) were useful in describing the experiences of women who held …
The Right Stuff: Habitus And Embodied Virtue In Sir Gawain And The Green Knight, Alice F. Blackwell
The Right Stuff: Habitus And Embodied Virtue In Sir Gawain And The Green Knight, Alice F. Blackwell
Quidditas
One of the themes weaving in and out of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is that of virtue: Gawain’s shield proclaims his virtue, yet at the end of the Green Chapel scene, he exclaims vice has destroyed his virtue, leaving him “faulty and false.” This scene has troubled critics and students, however, for many consider his reaction excessive for his default on the rules of a courtly game. The present paper contends that the notion of virtue written for Gawain naturalizes embodied virtue. While both religious and lay writers tended to argue that one possessed predisposition to moral or …
The Evangelical Sisterhood Of Mary: Profile Of A Protestant Monastic Order, George Faithful
The Evangelical Sisterhood Of Mary: Profile Of A Protestant Monastic Order, George Faithful
Collected Faculty Scholarship
It is not self-evident that there should be Protestant nuns. Yet the Evangelical Sisterhood of Mary has existed in Germany for over sixty years. Why? How did the Sisterhood come to be? And what are the Sisters’ distinctive practices and beliefs? To answer these questions, I will provide a brief historical overview of the sisters’ founding, followed by a survey of the teachings of Mother Basilea, their preeminent founder, which I will augment with an analysis of the architecture of the sisters’ communities.

How To Preach A Protestant Sermon: A Comparison Of Lutheran And Reformed Homiletics, Amy Nelson Burnett
How To Preach A Protestant Sermon: A Comparison Of Lutheran And Reformed Homiletics, Amy Nelson Burnett
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Preaching was the central function of the Protestant minister. From the very beginning of the Reformation, proclaiming "the pure word of God" from the pulpit was the most important way of making evangelical doctrine known, and both Lutherans and Reformed redefined the functions of pastoral care to place new emphasis on preaching. Both pastors already in the parish and young men training for the ministry needed to know how to preach. To provide the necessary guidance for these pastors, evangelical theologians produced a number of homiletics texts that prescribed how to write a Protestant sermon. Most of these preaching manuals …
