Under The Aegis Of Science: The Philippine Scientific Community Before The Second World War, Jonathan Victor Baldoza

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thearticle explores the formation of a prewar community of Filipino scientists nurtured and trained within the scientific order that American scientists installed, developed, and managed in the early part of the twentieth century. It examines vital institutions that shaped and recast the landscape of scientific knowledge production in the Philippines before the Second World War. It explores the ways by which Filipino scientists, endowed with intellectual legitimacy but ambiguously situated in relation to US rule, actively participated in planning for the forthcoming nation, bearing the torch of science as key to the nation’s progress and modernity.KEYWORDS: COLONIAL HISTORY OF SCIENCE …

The Psychological Effects Of Starvation In The Holocaust: The Dehumanization And Deterioration Of Its Victims, Kelly Young

Augsburg Honors Review

My paper exposes the inherent link between the intense starvation implemented by the Nazi regime in concentration camps during the Holocaust and the psychological state of the victims of the camp system. Explored in this essay are the deteriorative and dehumanizing effects that starvation played on the mind of the camp prisoner. In this paper, I explore the widespread and intense malnutrition among the prisoners that led to cognitive decay such as comprehension complications and loss of concentration. I also examine the cognitive and psychological processes that led to acts of desperation, such as cannibalism, as well as the specifically …

Disasters And The Making Of Asian History, Chris Courtney, Fiona Williamson Feb 2020

Disasters And The Making Of Asian History, Chris Courtney, Fiona Williamson

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Environmental historians have often been drawn to disasters. They have unearthed the often-forgotten stories of erupting volcanoes, raging rivers and rainless skies, and in so doing have reminded their colleagues from more anthropocentric disciplines that the societies, economies and cultures they study are part of broader physical systems. In addition to highlighting the agency of nature, however, disasters have also helped to remind us that environmental history remains at heart a humanistic discipline. It should never be simply a lament for lost natural habitats, but also a discipline which offers a unique prism through which to study people. It is …

A History Of The Swiss In California, Richard Hacken Jan 2020

A History Of The Swiss In California, Richard Hacken

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In 1848, the same year that Switzerland’s political structure

took on its present constitutional form as a modern nation-state, a Swiss

settler-entrepreneur named John Sutter became aware of gold deposits

at his mill in Alta California. This led directly to the California Gold

Rush. Two years later, in 1850, the United States accepted the freshly

acquired and promising region now known as “California” into the

Union as a state. Swiss immigrants enhanced the development of California

from its very inception.

‘To Awaken The Medical And Hygienic Conscience Of The People’: Cultivating Enlightened Citizenship Through Free Public Healthcare In Haiti From 1915–34, Elliott M. Reichardt Jan 2020

‘To Awaken The Medical And Hygienic Conscience Of The People’: Cultivating Enlightened Citizenship Through Free Public Healthcare In Haiti From 1915–34, Elliott M. Reichardt

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty publications

This paper addresses the relative scholarly oversight of the history of public health in Haiti through a close examination of the colonial public health system constructed and operated by the United States (US) during its occupation of Haiti from 1915 to 1934. More than simply documenting a neglected aspect of Caribbean history, the paper offers the US occupation of Haiti as a remarkably clear example of a failed attempt to use a free public health service to cultivate a health conscientiousness among the Haitian citizenry through the aggressive treatment of highly visible ailments such as cataracts and yaws. I argue …

Pestilence And Poverty: The Great Influenza Pandemic And Underdevelopment In The New South, 1918-1919, Andrew Kishuni Jan 2020

Pestilence And Poverty: The Great Influenza Pandemic And Underdevelopment In The New South, 1918-1919, Andrew Kishuni

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This study examines the "Spanish" influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 in the U.S. South, using case-studies of Jacksonville, Savannah, New Orleans, and Nashville to sculpt a "Southern flu" more identical to the Global South and the developing world than the rest of the U.S. I examine poverty and political and economic paralysis in the years between the end of Reconstruction and 1918, and the poor results of political indifference on public health and disease control. I also analyze the social and institutional racism against persons of color that defined high infectious disease mortality in Southern cities.

I argue that Southerners faced …

Woodcuts Of Human Oddities In The Fasciculus Temporum, Brady Brick Jan 2020

Woodcuts Of Human Oddities In The Fasciculus Temporum, Brady Brick

Fasciculus Temporum

This paper focuses on two woodcut images of human oddities in Portland State University’s edition of the Fasciculus temporum (Prüss, Strassburg, 1490).

One woodcut shows children with birth anomalies affecting their eyes, arms, and legs. The second is of a cynocephalus or dog-headed man. The history and context of these types of images and their significance within the text are both considered. This paper also examines possible medical explanations for the physical anomalies shown in the woodcut images.

Making Good : World War I, Disability, And The Senses In American Rehabilitation, Evan Patrick Sullivan Jan 2020

Making Good : World War I, Disability, And The Senses In American Rehabilitation, Evan Patrick Sullivan

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study looks at how disabled American soldier-patients and the US Army used the senses as tools of rehabilitation after the Great War. Contemporaries argued that, when the hundreds of thousands of American soldiers came home wounded or sick after the Great War, the men needed to make good. The phrase “making good” meant that sacrifice in the war was not enough, and veterans had to become socially and economically independent, and return to heterosexual relationships. In an effort to return to normalcy, the US Army relied on rehabilitation, which aimed to medically and socially re-integrate the men into society.

Marketing The Golden Rule: Near East Relief And Philanthropy’S Role In The Political Economy, 1915-1930, Elizabeth Berit Barrs

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The history of the American aid agency Near East Relief (NER), particularly its Golden Rule Sunday campaign from 1923 to 1928, reveals an integral part played by philanthropy in the broader political economy in the interwar years, specifically in the American food industry. Millions of Americans participated in the campaign by eating a simple four-cent orphanage-style meal and donating the cost difference from their normal Sunday dinners to support starving children orphaned by the Armenian genocide. By the mid-twenties NER’s Golden Rule Sunday became a nation-wide cultural phenomenon.

Near East Relief was founded in 1915 as a temporary effort to …

Kim Williams: Professionalizing Domesticity In Montana And Abroad, 1923-1986, Emmett Ball

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Kim Williams was a renowned writer and naturalist living and working in Missoula, Montana in the 1970s and 80s. She gained national recognition for her regular guest appearances on National Public Radio’s program “All Things Considered,” where she offered home-spun lessons on frugality, naturalism, and happiness through simplicity. Williams’s professionalization of domesticity was the culmination of a lifelong battle in an attempt to reconcile her own personal conception of femininity against her conflicting aspirations for a professional career and a familial, domestic life. There is little scholarship analyzing Williams’s personal life, and no known scholarship has attempted to condense her …
