The Miraculous Island Of Switzerland In The Midst Of The Third Reich, H. Dwight Page Feb 1999

The Miraculous Island Of Switzerland In The Midst Of The Third Reich, H. Dwight Page

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In the film version of Hermann Wouk's War and Remembrance, the Polish Jewish professor Aaron Jastrow and his American Jewish niece Nathalie fall into the trap of the monstrous Nazi genocidal machine and are interned at Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia. Upon their arrival there, they are initially treated with brutality until Professor Jastrow reminds their Nazi captors, "We are under Swiss protection." Thereafter, they receive noticeably better treatment. Although Aaron Jastrow later perishes in a gas chamber at Auschwitz, Nathalie owes her own escape from the same camp and her eventual rescue by the Americans at Weimar, Germany in April, …

Intimate Colonialism: The Imperial Production Of Reproduction In Uganda, 1907-1925, Carol Summers

History Faculty Publications

British concern over the reproduction of the population and society of Uganda intensified from 1907 through 1924. Institutions and ideologies were developed to cope with an epidemic of STDs, to promote the family as a unit of reproduction, and to reform motherhood. The British colonizers and the African elite of Uganda built a population crisis from a collection of beliefs and data. The perceived severity of this crisis - and the response it evoked - changed over the years. That response began as a straightforward medical attempt to treat the ill. After the World War, though, "social hygiene" became an …

Southern Baptist Missions In China 1945-1951, Garnett Lee White Jan 1967

Southern Baptist Missions In China 1945-1951, Garnett Lee White

Master's Theses

This thesis developed from a seminar paper on the South China Mission of the Southern Baptist Convention, 1945-1951, prepared for Dr. R. Barry Westin in the tall of 1965. Though the scope of this present study includes Southern Baptist Missions in all of China during the same period, its purpose remains the same. That purpose is to present the course of the evangelical outreach or this large Protestant denomination, and the progress made in establishing an indigenous Christian movement in China before the Communists forced the withdrawal of all missionary personnel.

A History Of Morocco In Anglo-American Literature 1892-1957, Robert G. Wagner Jan 1958

A History Of Morocco In Anglo-American Literature 1892-1957, Robert G. Wagner

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Although several studies exist in French on the French and English literature of Morocco up to the twentieth century, nothing of a similar nature is extant for books on the country in English. Moreover, no previous study included twentieth century English and American books. A survey of the serious works on Morocco reveals that that country has been generally neglected by American and English scholars as an area for Investigation.
