An Unpublished Reminiscence Of James Fenimore Cooper, Constantine Evans Oct 1989

An Unpublished Reminiscence Of James Fenimore Cooper, Constantine Evans

The Courier

It is written in pencil on two sheets of paper, one of which is the blank back of a Herkimer County newspaper supplement of 1889. Each sheet is folded to form a sort of booklet. Mather's text, as it stands, is disjointed and marred by occasionally confused syntax, illegible words, and repetitions. A series of false starts, of beginnings not decided upon, occurs before something of a narrative coherence is achieved. Material obviously intended …

Signals Intelligence In World War Ii Ultra And The Air War In Europe, Demetrio J. Perez

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

(First paragraph) In recent years the study of military intelligence, particularly when viewed from a historical context, has acquired new significance. As military historians attempt to find a correlation between wartime events and the intelligence activities supporting those events, many serious works in this field have emerged. Some accounts of World War II military intelligence deal with the subject in terms of its benefits to the field commander. Others take a more extreme view and argue that major wartime successes resulted more from good intelligence than from good leadership.

J. Christian Bay And His Account Of Hans Christian Andersen's Visit To Chicago, Rolf Erickson

The Bridge

The legendary Jens Christian Bay, librarian of the John Crerar Library of Chicago, and Danish-American writer, never met Hans Christian Andersen, of course, since he had been but three years old when Andersen died in 1875. And, Hans Christian Andersen never visited America though he had been offered countless invitations.

Intertextuality In The Anglo-Norman Lyric, Carol J. Harvey Jan 1989

Intertextuality In The Anglo-Norman Lyric, Carol J. Harvey

Quidditas

The rhetorical formulae that permeate the poetry of the Middle Ages are not always used in a conventional or consistent manner. On the fringes of the main literary movements are works that raise doubts as to the very nature of medieval poetics. Some texts challenge accepted criteria with respect to genre, tone, or interpretation; others appear unfamiliar and heterogeneous in comparison with accepted poetic concepts; still others use the language and imagery of established poetics as a polemic strategy. Such problematic texts are found among the lyric poems composed in England during the Anglo-Norman era, particularly among the macaronics. These …
