The Nazis, The Vatican, And The Jews Of Rome, Patrick J. Gallo
The Nazis, The Vatican, And The Jews Of Rome, Patrick J. Gallo
Purdue University Press Books
On October 16, 1943, the Jews of Rome were targeted for arrest and deportation. The Nazis, the Vatican, and the Jews of Rome examines why—and more importantly how—it could have been avoided, featuring new evidence and insight into the Vatican’s involvement. At the time, Rome was within reach of the Allies, but the overwhelming force of the Wehrmacht, Gestapo, and SS in Rome precluded direct confrontation. Moral condemnations would not have worked, nor would direct confrontation by the Italians, Jewish leadership, or even the Vatican.
Gallo underscores the necessity of determining what courses of actions most likely would have spared …

Theses and Dissertations
Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system due to a lack of the neurotransmitter, dopamine. There are many potential symptoms, the most common involve movement, balance, walking, twitching, rigidity, and speech. There is no cure but there are numerous treatments for the symptoms which often have serious side effects. Rigorous exercise has been found to delay and, in some cases, reverse the severity of the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. One of the more successful exercise programs is Rock Steady Boxing, which was established in Indianapolis, Indiana in 2006 and currently has over 700 affiliated programs worldwide. In …

Cultural And Philosophical Beliefs In Tea Poetry, Julia M. Minor
Cultural And Philosophical Beliefs In Tea Poetry, Julia M. Minor
CAFE Symposium 2023
Tea is a commodity that has greatly changed the course of history. One example of the influence of tea is in poetry. This project analyzes some examples of tea poetry from China and Japan to understand how tea in poetry conveys cultural and philosophical beliefs of given time periods. China and Japan are looked at collectively because their histories are very entwined. In the two Chinese poems, tea is tied to hierarchical relations and the importance of Taoism. In the Japanese poems, tea is greatly related to nature and appreciating simplicity. Three of the four poems are a reaction to …

Social Identity, Scientific Practice, And The Production Of Social Knowledge: An Ethnographic Investigation Of American Social Psychology Laboratories, Donald V. Brown Jr
Social Identity, Scientific Practice, And The Production Of Social Knowledge: An Ethnographic Investigation Of American Social Psychology Laboratories, Donald V. Brown Jr
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Social identity has the ability to permeate a multitude of domains in everyday life. Therefore, the science of social psychology—influential due to its impact in education, social and public policy, and the law—rightfully foregrounds the presence of social identity categories in the theorizing and empirical work of the discipline. Many researchers consider social identities such as race and gender to be socially constructed categories. This allows researchers to understand these identities in light of their history, complexity, and relationships to each other. However, the practical application and use of social identities as socially constructed “objects of study” is uncommon in …
Naming Venus: An Exploration Of Goddesses, Heroines, And Famous Women, Kavya Beheraj
Naming Venus: An Exploration Of Goddesses, Heroines, And Famous Women, Kavya Beheraj
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Humans have been observing and romanticizing Venus for more than 5,000 years. However, mapping its surface has nearly always been impossible, since the planet is shrouded in thick clouds. A breakthrough came just fifty years ago with the invention of radar imaging, leading to the discovery (and naming) of hundreds of new features in a relatively short length of time.
The rapid naming of Venus is a case study on the impact of planetary nomenclature — the process of naming features on other worlds. While the act of naming streamlines communication and humanizes alien landscapes, it is subject to bias, …

Their oldest child, Jane, married and lived out her days at Locust Hill, the family estate in Virginia. The Lewis’ second child, baby Lucinda, died in infancy. Their third child, Meriwether – the closest in age and friendship to Reuben – became the famous first half of the Lewis and Clark Expedition which explored the uncharted West before he met his tragic and mysterious death on the Natchez Trace in Tennessee. While Reuben’s life has been rightly overshadowed by his older brother Meriwether’s …
