The Destunis Collection In The Manuscript Section Of The Saltykov-Shchedrin State Public Library In Leningrad, Theophilus C. Prousis

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

This work began as an outgrowth of a research project on Russian culture and the Greek War of Independence: a study in Russian philhellenism. The opportunity to conduct research in the Soviet Union in 1980-81 and 1987-88 brought to light new themes and sources in the field of Greek-Slavic cultural relations. Access to the archival collections of several Greeks who achieved prominence in Russia provided concrete information on their contributions to Russian society and culture in a variety of areas, such as civic activity, education, scholarship, and publicistic endeavors.

The Heritage Of Faith: An Historical Evaluation Of The Holiness Movement In America, Craig Charles Fankhauser Jan 1983

The Heritage Of Faith: An Historical Evaluation Of The Holiness Movement In America, Craig Charles Fankhauser

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

This work traces the holiness movement from the Biblical Day of Pentecost, when the disciples of Christ first received the Holy Spirit, to the founding of independent holiness denominations in the first two decades of the twentieth century. In the eighteenth century the main emphasis of this perfectionists movement centered around the teachings of an Anglican priest, John Wesley. Wesleyan doctrine stressed two distinct religious experiences--justification (God forgiving individuals their sins) and sanctification. The latter cleansed the believer's heart from original sin and made him ready for heaven.

American holiness proponents founded the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1784 and in …

The Renascence Of Classical Thought And Form In The Carolingian Period, Sara James Laster Jan 1983

The Renascence Of Classical Thought And Form In The Carolingian Period, Sara James Laster

Institute for the Humanities Theses

The political stability established under the rule of Charlemagne (768-814) was conducive to the flourishing of the simultaneous resurgence of art and learning. Inspired by the achievements of the Roman Empire, Charlemagne wished to give his subjects a feeling of spiritual unity, a sense of continuity with the past, and an enhanced intellectual life. The classical intellectual tradition is traced from ancient times to the Carolingian present to demonstrate that classicism was a continuum. The thesis examines the classical tradition in the intellectual life of the Carolingian period, its conscious rejuvenation in the figurative arts, and its manifestation in the …

The Way We Were: A History Of Student Life At Gettysburg College 1832-1982, Anna Jane Moyer

College History Publications

In writing The Way We Were: A History of Student Life at Gettysburg College, 1832-1982, it has been my purpose to capture what it was like to be a student at Gettysburg as the changing patterns of that life evolved and shifted with the growth of the College and events in the world outside the campus. Space confines impose perimeters. No attempt has been made to detail the history of organizations or to include many of the names of persons involved in campus leadership. The role of athletics has been mentioned only briefly as two monographs in the History …

Reverend William Graham, Presbyterian Minister And Rector Of Liberty Hall Academy, Robert Goggin Gillespie

Master's Theses

During the last quarter of the eighteenth century, the Reverend William Graham, a Presbyterian Minister, became noted as an educator and minister in Virginia. In addition to teaching and preaching, William Graham was a lso interested in the political affairs of the time. He was vitally concerned with the establishment of representative democracy. He felt that through the constitutions and laws which were then being adopted …

A History Of The French Mission Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints 1850-1960, Gary Ray Chard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is an evangelical religion. From a beginning in western New York in 1830, it grew into a world-wide organization which numbered more than a million and a half members by 1960. Those largely responsible for this growth have been the Church members who have volunteered two to three years of their time to missionary service. In 1960 there were approximately 7,000 of these missionaries working in different areas of the world. Of this number, almost 1,800 were serving in Europe, where with the exception of the personnel of the United States government …

Erasmus And Luther: Precursors Of A Mass Movement, Martha Reinmuth Mar 1962

Erasmus And Luther: Precursors Of A Mass Movement, Martha Reinmuth

Graduate Student Research Papers

In his book, The True Believer, Eric Hoffer, with Machiavellian detachment, sets forth a theory on the nature of mass movements. This paper will be primarily concerned with the aspect of Mr. Hoffer' s theory that deals with the setting of the stage for a mass movement--specifically, the temperament, needs, and motives of the men who perform this prerequisite act. Though many and influential were the contributions of other men to the preparation for the final act of church reform in the sixteenth century, it is generally conceded that Desiderius Erasmus and Martin Luther's names stand out in the boldest …

Ephesus, Pagan And Christian 133 B.C. - 262 A.D., Ruth O. Michener

Graduate Thesis Collection

This dissertation is an atrcempt to reconstruct and to recapture a period in the history of this famous city, a center so important in New Testament times and in the first two centuries or the Christian Church, but a metropolis which centuries ago became buried in the silt of a river. The site and a primitive kind of settlement began in pre-historic times. We will briefly trace the story of its ancestory; its youth; its changes; traditions; then its glory between the years 133 B.C. to A.D. 262; its contribution to culture; its spirit; its contact with Christianity; its period …

A History Of Hat Creek Presbyterian Church, 1742-1953, Sydnor Franklin Foster

Master's Theses

All the records of the early history of Hat Creek were destroyed in a very unfortunate fire in 1854. The first two volumes of the present records are kept in storage at the Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. The third volume, covering the period from 1902 to 194o, will probably be sent there for safe storage in the very near future. Em ploying every available source, the writer has attempted to give a chronological account of the events surrounding Hat Creek from ifs founding in 1742, through the end of 1953.
