Napoleon I And Education In The Sciences: One Aspect Of The Two Cultures In Conflict, Raymond J. Maras Jun 1976

Napoleon I And Education In The Sciences: One Aspect Of The Two Cultures In Conflict, Raymond J. Maras

University of Dayton Review

Several years ago the position was taken that Napoleon's patronage of the sciences when weighed against the provisions for the teaching of science in the schools seems to be in the nature of propaganda. According to the research on the subject, science, under the Napoleonic aegis, was defined in a narrow, utilitarian manner and "any attempt to institutionalize a concept of science which went beyond this utilitarianism was immediately thwarted." Hence, Napoleon's contribution was merely to continue the close link between science and the military which the Revolution introduced. In fact, in Napoleon's regime "the pursuit of a scientific education …

District #82 - Carey High, Office Of The County Superintendent, Saunders County Jan 1976

District #82 - Carey High, Office Of The County Superintendent, Saunders County

Saunders County Bicentennial Educational History

Early records indicate that a small one room school was painstakingly raised before the turn of the century, in 1876, which was 9 years after Nebraska attained statehood. The land had been plotted and arranged in districts, each serving its own community needs.

That first year 60 students were enrolled, ranging in age from 5 to 20.

It sometimes took two decades to complete requirements for a grade school (sometimes called grammar school) education, as school was held on a "come when you are able" basis.

Cemeteries Of South Central Minnesota, James Pyle Jan 1976

Cemeteries Of South Central Minnesota, James Pyle

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Features of 351 cemeteries in south central Minnesota are described as pervasive, visible points of the cultural landscape. The preferred hilltop location and regular layout and design reflect values and attitudes of early settlers, whose history can be traced through analysis of tombstones. Alternative uses of cemetery land are considered hypothetically, although no changes in land use are anticipated.

Documents On Western Australian Education 1830 - 1973, B. T. Haynes (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

Reflecting the general lack of concern for education in the 1820's,the plans for the Swan River Settlement contained no scheme for the establishment of schools. Both nature and man mitigated against the early creation of a viable education system. The concentration upon the problem of survival meant that there were few resources for schools, while child labour played an important role in the economy, The land grant system together with poor soil resulted in a dispersed settlement which made the provision of schools expensive. Without resources, the District Boards were incapable of providing education and this, together with the Government …
