Fort Hays Studies Series
During the late nineteenth century American settlers and emigrants from Germany, Russia, Switzerland, and Sweden moved westward seeking a place to live in peace, raise their families, and better their lives. They slogged through the muddy trails of the Missouri and slowly progressed through the drier -but barely discernible trails of Nebraska until they arrived at what is now Cheyenne Cotmty, Kansas.

The Germans From Russia: A Bibliography Of Materials In The Ethnic Heritage Collection At Fort Hays State University, Helmut J. Schmeller
The Germans From Russia: A Bibliography Of Materials In The Ethnic Heritage Collection At Fort Hays State University, Helmut J. Schmeller
Fort Hays Studies Series
While the collection contains a variety of materials pertaining to the history of diverse immigrant groups, the present bibliography focuses on the largest of these groups, namely the Germans from Russia whose economic, social, and cultural impact has been a major formative element in the shaping of a distinctive regional character. Unlike many other groups, the Germans from Russia have maintained a pronounced awareness of their ethnic identity, a fact which testifies not only to an inherent vitality but also to the quality of their social, cultural, and religious values.

Ethnicity On The Great Plains: Preface & Introduction, Frederick C. Luebke
Ethnicity On The Great Plains: Preface & Introduction, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Immigrants from Europe formed a major element in the population that settled the Great Plains in the nineteenth century; their descendants constitute the majority of persons in many parts of the region today. A century ago, as the agricultural frontier moved across central Nebraska onto what is considered the Great Plains, foreignborn persons consistently formed a much larger proportion of the inhabitants on the western edge of settlement than they did in the state as a whole. Some years later the census of 1890 revealed that in North Dakota, for example, 42.7 percent of the population of that newly admitted …

The Development Of An Annotated Bibliography Of Historical Fiction For Use In An American History Course, Patricia Thayer
The Development Of An Annotated Bibliography Of Historical Fiction For Use In An American History Course, Patricia Thayer
Graduate Research Papers
Juvenile literature is an effective and appealing tool to supplement classroom instruction. More specifically, historical fiction can provide supplemental readings to enhance and enrich an American Studies Course.
The purpose of this study was to determine if an annotated bibliography of historical fiction relating to the Civil War era could be developed. The novels to be included were to be of an interest level including grade eight and a reading level range of grades four through eleven. Major social/cultural, political/legal, and economic issues of the Civil War era were attributed to each title in the bibliography.
The researcher had predicted …

Julius Caesar In Medieval France: The Textual Sources And Iconography Of The Faits Des Romains, Mark M. Nelson
Honors Papers
The Julius Caesar of Shakespeare's day was a figure who believed that fame transcended mortality. Long after Caesar the man was dead, Caesar the legend lived on. It was a legend which in many ways was an analogue of the man. The legend maintained all of Caesar's stubborn persistence, and to some extent his power, his influence, and his ability to provoke controversy. This legend was borne across the Middle Ages by a mere handful of literary manuscripts. Just as the historical Caesar had survived the many pitfalls of his career, these manuscripts somehow escaped the numerous fates that could …

The Bridge
When the editor of The Bridge asked if I would write my reaction to my dissertation, I did a great deal of thinking. How would I write about my feelings which covered the four years during which I did the research and writing of this paper? I concluded that a historical review would give me the best opportunity to present my reaction to my research. Then, when he asked me to review my own study since it related my experiences, I concluded that both could be incorporated in one effort if I were permitted to make personal references.
