Hannah A. Rosebrook: Community Journalist/Local Historian 'The Fairview News,' Kearny County, Kansas, 1918 - 1980, Lee Pendergrass

Fort Hays Studies Series

In reading these columns one should never assume that community life was submerged by important national events such as World War II. Rather community life remained surprisingly normal and one gains the impression that the people Mrs.Rosebrook knew were determined not to allow their everyday life to be disrupted by any catastrophe, including the Dust Bowl storms. Perhaps this was their way of coping.

The Christian Republicanism Of Timothy Dwight And Jedidiah Morse: The New American Israel And The French Antithesis, Kim Alan Snyder Jul 1981

The Christian Republicanism Of Timothy Dwight And Jedidiah Morse: The New American Israel And The French Antithesis, Kim Alan Snyder

History Theses & Dissertations

Timothy Dwight and Jedidiah Morse were New England Congregational clergymen during America's early national period. Due to their criticisms of the French Revolution and their belief in a fictional plot by the Bavarian Illuminati to destroy religion and civil government both men have been judged by historians as backward-looking, unenlightened reactionaries. The evidence, however, reveals that Dwight and Morse were well educated, devoted to the advancement of learning, and filled with great visions of America as God's New Israel, destined to lead the zest of the world into religious and civil liberty. They espoused the ideology of Christian Republicanism and, …

The Bungalow Aesthetic: The Social Implications Of A Nationwide Phenomenon Viewed From The Perspective Of A Small Town, Janice Williams Rutherford May 1981

The Bungalow Aesthetic: The Social Implications Of A Nationwide Phenomenon Viewed From The Perspective Of A Small Town, Janice Williams Rutherford

Dissertations and Theses

During the first two decades of the twentieth century, a new aesthetic in the domestic architecture of middle-class America emerged. A new style of house, the bungalow, was introduced soon after the turn of the century, and within a very few years, became the most popular building style among Americans who were buying moderately-priced homes. The bungalow was a low, horizontal style of house with deep overhanging eaves and large porches, usually built of natural, textured materials. Its floor plan was notable for opening interior space. The research problem addressed in this study was to determine what factors popularized the …

Frontier Subsistence: An Example Of Nineteenth Century Fur Trade Food Procurement, Leslie A. Perry May 1981

Frontier Subsistence: An Example Of Nineteenth Century Fur Trade Food Procurement, Leslie A. Perry

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

The area of Frontier subsistence strategies holds considerable potential for explaining Euroamerican adaptation in North America between A.D. 1500 and 1900. This thesis examines the interrelationships between food procurement activities of a nineteenth century northern Plains fur trade post, Fort Union, and its environmental and economic settings. The subsistence strategy identified from ethnohistorical, archival, and archeological data illustrates the way in which inhabitants of the fort coped with a variable local environment and the demands of the fur trade. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the post's subsistence strategy indicates that both the subsistence strategy and the economic base of the …
