Attitude Towards Cross-Culture Exchange In The 1685 French Embassy To The Kingdom Of Siam, Benjamin M. Beese
Attitude Towards Cross-Culture Exchange In The 1685 French Embassy To The Kingdom Of Siam, Benjamin M. Beese
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
Traditional histories of Early Modern exchange tend to emphasize the dispersion and adoption (or rejection) of European science and culture. More recently, there has been an historiographical trend to see early modern international interactions as multi-direction exchanges in which all parties are altered in each interaction. The 1685 French-Jesuit Embassy to Siam provides an interesting opportunity to explore the implications of this multi-directional approach. Although this exchange had no significant, lasting impact on either Siam or France, the dynamics at play demonstrate how each party’s attitude towards the exchange impacted their ability to achieve their aims. This paper uses Guy …
“Unspoken Understanding”: The Evolution Of Chinese American Adoption Communities, Annie Abruzzo
“Unspoken Understanding”: The Evolution Of Chinese American Adoption Communities, Annie Abruzzo
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
While scholarly work on adoption, transnational adoption, and specifically international adoption from China has been robust, it has tended to focus on studying parents and parenting. This paper analyzes the resources used by both parents and children to discuss race, culture, and adoption, and seeks to understand the effects of these parenting strategies on Chinese American adoptees, who have begun to reach young adulthood in the last ten years. Examination of the recent growth of adoptee communities reveals that a shared and complex adoptee identity is a more powerful nexus than shared Chineseness.

Immodest Immortality: Emperor Maximilian I'S Artistic Program And The Ambraser Heldenbuch, 1504-1519, Jessica Cochran
History ETDs
Maximilian I (r. 1493-1519) utilized various forms of artistic and literary media throughout his reign to control his public image after his death. This thesis focuses on a manuscript project that has historically received little scholarly attention. The Ambraser Heldenbuch, produced between 1504 and 1517, preserves German heroic epics, many of which would otherwise be lost today. The manuscript has been highly valued for its literary and linguistic significance, but this thesis argues that the entire project sheds light on Maximilian’s plan to immortalize not only his own reputation, but also that of his family. This thesis focuses on …
The Transformation Of Identity In Early Medieval England: Continuity, Disruption, And Creolization, Michael Sean Limmer
The Transformation Of Identity In Early Medieval England: Continuity, Disruption, And Creolization, Michael Sean Limmer
History ETDs
The period following Rome’s administrative withdrawal from Britain (c. 410 CE) has sparked intense debate for centuries, spawning a variety of theories concerning ethnic identity and the nature of cultural exchange on the island. Presently, the very nature of the term “Anglo-Saxon” itself is at the center of these discussions. This thesis examines historical, archaeological, and genetic evidence to cast a light on who constituted the people of Britain during this migration period through to the time of Alfred, and to what extent creolization might have played out. Ultimately, the evidence from this period suggests that ethnic identities cannot reasonably …

Chateaubriand's Florida And His Journey To America, E. P. Panagopoulos
Chateaubriand's Florida And His Journey To America, E. P. Panagopoulos
Florida Historical Quarterly
The American writings of Chateaubriand have nearly been forgotten. Despite the beauty of their poetic prose and the power of their descriptions, historians now consider them obsolete. In 1968 the bicentennial year of his birth was celebrated in other parts of the world with special conferences and impressive publications, but in the United States no periodical commemorated the event, and no paper re-evaluating Chateaubriand’s contribution was read in any of the numerous historical meetings. And yet, Chateaubriand was not just another author. During the first half of the nineteenth century his writings played a great part in shaping French, if …

Recently a manuscript map entitled “Sketch of the Indian and Negro Towns on the Suwaney River” was found during a search of the National Archives and Records Service documents section by A. P. Muntz, chief of the cartographic branch. This map (RG77:L 247-94) is included in a selection of signed and dated maps filed in the records of the Office of the Chief of Engineers pertaining to military activities in northern Florida in the vicinity of the Suwannee River. Almost all are dated 1839, and were rendered by officers of the “topographical engineers” contingent assigned to military forces commanded by …
Aspects Of The Development And Exploration Of The Forbes Purchase, John C. Upchurch
Aspects Of The Development And Exploration Of The Forbes Purchase, John C. Upchurch
Florida Historical Quarterly
Attempts at land speculation have been common in the United States. In Florida an early attempt involved an immense tract of land known as the “Forbes Purchase.” This territory, situated in the north-central part of the state bordering the Gulf of Mexico, was the object of exploitation as a unit for approximately fifty-seven years, 1804-1861. First under the trading firm of Panton, Leslie and Company and its successor John Forbes and Company, and later under the Apalachicola Land Company, this practically virgin wilderness was explored, surveyed, and to a degree developed.
Florida And Rumrunning During National Prohibition, James A. Carter, Iii
Florida And Rumrunning During National Prohibition, James A. Carter, Iii
Florida Historical Quarterly
Few periods in Florida's long, colorful history equal the excitement and turbulence of those years when national prohibition was in effect. From the outset of the "Noble Experiment" in 1920 it was apparent to even the most casual observer of events that the state was destined to play a starring role in the drama of that era. The proximity of the Bahamas and the Caribbean islands, coupled with an extensive coastline indented with innumerable bays and inlets, was a boon to liquor smuggling and rumrunning as enforcement agents quickly discovered.

Environmental Perception In Colombia's Páramo Protected Areas, Juliana Delgado
Environmental Perception In Colombia's Páramo Protected Areas, Juliana Delgado
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis analyzes the gap between farmers' environmental perceptions in Téquita, a small village in Colombia, and the definition of protected areas has led to a conflict for the use of natural resources. I examine if the protected area's policies have dealt with the social and ecological issues in the páramos and recognized the social construction of the landscape, farmers' identities, and their interpretations about work and land. The case study focuses on Güina High Mountain in the Guantiva-La Rusia páramo complex, which recently the Colombian government declared as a protected area. In light of anthropologist Tim Ingold's meaning of …

Critical Hermeneutics And The Counter Narrative Of Ledger Art, Katie Fuller
Critical Hermeneutics And The Counter Narrative Of Ledger Art, Katie Fuller
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Too often historical artworks in schools, textbooks, cultural institutions, and public spaces share a narrative that bolsters white-centered histories, but when an historical artwork is studied as text it creates room for multiple perspectives (Newfield, 2011) expanding the narrative to include subjugated histories. Looking at art through the philosophy of hermeneutics opens up questions and conflicts that arise within texts based on interpretations of those texts (Leonardo, 2003). This paper will apply the philosophy of hermeneutics to critique historical memory, and it will present ledger art as a visual text and counter narrative to dominant white narratives. Ledger art emerged …

Intolerable Histories And Imperfect Narratives: Nationhood, Identity, And The Integrity Of Law In Post-Vichy France And Beyond, Kaela S. Holmen
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
The principal aim of this thesis project is to examine the socio-legal context of the Vichy regime in World War II France, and to provide an understanding of how that context informed, and continues to inform, the integrity of French nationhood. With Ernest Renan’s oubli serving as a framework for the solidification of nationhood, I will demonstrate that the betrayals to French law and custom that were committed in an attempt to right the wrongs of the Vichy resulted in an imperfect forgetting, and ultimately, a more fragmented national sense of self. I contend that this imperfect oubli resulting from …
Baseball, With A Southern Accent: The Urban Game In The Post-Reconstruction South, Paul Dunder
Baseball, With A Southern Accent: The Urban Game In The Post-Reconstruction South, Paul Dunder
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Numerous scholars and historians have illuminated the importance of baseball within American society from the end of Reconstruction to the Great Depression. Yet their gaze has often been turned to the northern professional game. Very little has been written about how the game played a role in the South in the aftermath of the Civil War. This study considers how baseball in the South helped to reflect and underscore some of the tensions within a society marked by racial, class, and gendered conflicts. Baseball played an instrumental role in shaping aspects of Southern society and community identity in new urban …

Patients’ Rights, Patients’ Politics: Jewish Activists Of The U.S. Women’S Health Movement, 1969-1990, Jillian Michele Hinderliter
Theses and Dissertations
As the women’s health movement grew out of second wave feminism in the late 1960s, activists demanded women be taken seriously as health care consumers and critics of male-dominated medicine. Health feminists aimed to fundamentally redefine the relationship between patient and practitioner. Jewish women helped found and sustain the women’s health movement, yet their activist identities are often separated from Jewishness in histories of health reform. “Patients’ Rights, Patients’ Politics: Jewish Activists of the U.S. Women’s Health Movement, 1969-1990,” considers the impact of Jewish identity on Jewish activists’ conceptions of social justice while also tracing their significant contributions to women’s …

Charlotte's Glory Road: The History Of Nascar In The Queen City, Hannah Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis focuses on the relationship between the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) and Charlotte, North Carolina, and how the geography of the Charlotte area was a catalyst to the growth of the motorsports industry in the Queen City. Specifically, this thesis investigates the roles of NASCAR teams, Charlotte Motor Speedway, and the NASCAR Hall of Fame in creating and continuing to grow the presence of NASCAR in Charlotte. The Hall of Fame in particular has strengthened the position of Charlotte in NASCAR history, after officials selected Charlotte over Daytona and Atlanta for the site of the …
