The Menendez Marquez Cattle Barony At La Chua And The Determinants Of Economic Expansion In Seventeenth-Century Florida, Amy Bushnell Dec 2021

The Menendez Marquez Cattle Barony At La Chua And The Determinants Of Economic Expansion In Seventeenth-Century Florida, Amy Bushnell

Florida Historical Quarterly

Spanish Florida has the historical reputation of a bleak and unfriendly place, unproductive, impoverished, and unhealthy, where governors and soldiers, friars and passive Indian converts were unable to defend their own borders, much less make the land self-sustaining. The doleful letters from officials of the colony about the lateness or inadequacy of the garrison’s situado have made an impact on researchers, if they did not on the Crown. In recent years, however, examples of economic activity have been examined that belie this picture of total dependency. There were times during the seventeenth century when Spanish Florida approached self-sufficiency and was …

The White Springs Post Office Caper, Jerrell H. Shofner Dec 2021

The White Springs Post Office Caper, Jerrell H. Shofner

Florida Historical Quarterly

With the 1885 constitution ratified and the state’s poll tax law about to become effective, the 1888 election was the last in which large numbers of blacks voted and was the last in which the Republican party posed a serious threat to the predominance of the Democrats for many decades. Even then the Democrats carried the state races by comfortable majorities. But the 1888 race had been an exciting election in which some Conservative-Democrats in the black belt counties had left themselves vulnerable to charges of violating federal election laws. This caused concern among them when Democrat Grover Cleveland was …

The Alachua Trail: A Reconstruction, Burke G. Vanderhill Dec 2021

The Alachua Trail: A Reconstruction, Burke G. Vanderhill

Florida Historical Quarterly

Among numerous Indian pathways forming a network within the American Southeast at the time of European contact was one which led southward from the Altamaha River of Georgia to the Alachua country of Florida. (Fig. 1) This “Alachua Trail” was well known in the colonial period, a fact pointing to long aboriginal use. Today however the trail is unmarked and generally lost to memory, and only rare and tantalizingly brief references to it appear in the historical record.

Pride, Shame And Tv Dinners - Honour And Shame, Edward Brennan Dec 2021

Pride, Shame And Tv Dinners - Honour And Shame, Edward Brennan

Conference Papers

This paper critiques a dominant narrative in the history of Irish television, which typically equate television’s arrival with the launch of RTÉ in 1961 and interpret its development through a state-centred, modernisation framework. Drawing on life-story interviews with people who experienced television in Ireland during the 1950s and 1960s, the research challenges methodological nationalism by foregrounding memory as a source. It reveals how television was an uncertain status object that carried meanings of pride, shame, discipline, and cultural value. Theoretically informed by Bourdieu, Halbwachs, and Inglis, the paper analyses recollection as practical social action. Early television consumption was mediated by …

Captain Hugh Young And His 1818 Topographical Memoir To Andrew Jackson, Ernest F. Dibble

Florida Historical Quarterly

When General Andrew Jackson campaigned through West Florida and took possession of Pensacola in 1818, he was traveling through territory not previously explored and mapped by an American. To traverse this territory with his army, he had to depend upon receiving extensive topographical information. For this he relied upon the surveys provided at the time by Captain Hugh Young, assistant topographical engineer and fellow Tennessean.

"Clothes Make Men": Clothing And The Embodiment Of Gender In Virginia, 1750-1775, Rhiannon O'Neil Dec 2021

"Clothes Make Men": Clothing And The Embodiment Of Gender In Virginia, 1750-1775, Rhiannon O'Neil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This study explores how late colonial Virginians used clothing to control, enforce, and negotiate gender. Gender, both as a system of power and as a category of social identity, became linked with the material forms of clothing that Virginians wore in their everyday lives. The identification of clothing with the body enabled Virginians to actively make choices about how to perform themselves to the wider culture of observation and perception present in the colony. Dress was ubiquitous, but its meanings were variable, changing, and unstable. In eighteenth-century Virginia, Anglo-descended colonists imported ideals from Britain, which then produced Chesapeake-specific gender relationships, …

The Ogoni Uprising In Nigeria: The Niger-Delta Crisis And Its Impact On Nigeria’S Unity, 1980-1999, Gregory A. Odey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1956, shortly before Nigeria’s independence, Shell BP found crude oil in Oloibiri Bayelsa State marking a turning point in the socioeconomics and politics of the nation. Since then, oil has grown into a major export commodity comprising over ninety-five percent of the nation’s gross national product. The region is one of the world’s largest ecosystems, but due to the ongoing pollution, a direct result of the oil companies lacks potable water. This study addresses this humanitarian crisis and examines the agency of Nigeria’s federal government and the collaboration with multinational oil corporations’ contributions to the environmental deconstruction in the …

Women’S Acts Of Childbirth And Conquest In English Historical Writing, Emma O. Bérat Dec 2021

Women’S Acts Of Childbirth And Conquest In English Historical Writing, Emma O. Bérat

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

This essay explores how female characters in historical literature written in high to late medieval England shape land claims, political history, and genealogy through their acts of childbirth. Recent scholarship has shown how medieval writers frequently imagined virginal female bodies – religious and secular – in relation to land claim, but less work exists on how they also used the non-virginal bodies of mothers and vivid descriptions of childbirth to assert rights to land and lineage. This essay examines three birth stories associated with conquest or claims to contested lands from Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae, William of …

Women’S Work And Men’S Devotions: The Fabrics Of The Passion In “O Vernicle”, Jenny C. Bledsoe Dec 2021

Women’S Work And Men’S Devotions: The Fabrics Of The Passion In “O Vernicle”, Jenny C. Bledsoe

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

This article explores how male Cistercians producing an early fifteenth-century miscellaneous manuscript made devotional use of images representing women’s textile labor. An early manuscript copy of “O Vernicle,” a Middle English arma Christi poem, appears in Royal 17 A. xxvii, likely produced at Bordesley Abbey. The Royal version of “O Vernicle” features a unique marginal illumination of two women of Bethlehem and Jerusalem wearing green and red dresses. The woman in green holds a baby swaddled in a green and blue cloth with red stripes, similar to a Scottish tartan. Three other examples demonstrate the illuminator’s careful attention to fabric’s …

Collige Et Impera: The United States Reengagement In Libya, Marco Schinella Dec 2021

Collige Et Impera: The United States Reengagement In Libya, Marco Schinella

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

President Biden's "America is back" pledge holds the potential to be put to the test with the ongoing crisis in Libya. The internationalization of the post-Ghaddafi Libyan breakdown, strained by great-power competition (GPC) dynamics, poses nonnegligible threats to the United States (US) national security that extends beyond Libya per se. Reframing the conflict from yet another Middle East and North Africa (MENA) conflict to an urgent multilateral Mediterranean security challenge will help elevate the country's profile on the global stage. This thesis outlines a qualitative, within-case study analysis of the ongoing Libyan crisis from the perspective of US national security …

Transboundary Air Quality Governance: A Case Study Of The Paso Del Norte Air Basin 1940-2000, Laura Margarita Uribarri

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

For thousands of years, the Paso del Norte region which today includes Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, El Paso, Texas, and Sunland Park, New Mexico, has been a strategic location by virtue of its geographic positioning at the lowest and easiest passage across the continental divide. During the 19th and 20th centuries as railroad networks connected the region to the far reaches of the U.S. and the interior of Mexico, it became a nexus for natural resource and labor extraction. Mining and smelting industries were later joined by agriculture and manufacturing to benefit from the transportation network and the abundance of labor. …

Behind The Steel Bars Of History: The Post-Civil Rights Era Radical Prison Movement, Stephen Perez Jr. Nov 2021

Behind The Steel Bars Of History: The Post-Civil Rights Era Radical Prison Movement, Stephen Perez Jr.

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

The resistance and political action taken by the incarcerated in prisons like Attica Correctional Facility during the post-civil rights era (1968 -1972) faced an unprecedented state-led, counterinsurgent force. The socio-historical context of this suppression is a time of crisis for the U.S. as it struggled to maintain capitalist hegemony in the face of anti-systemic movements from the New Left. The post-civil rights era was a moment in US history that saw the strongest and most radical challenge to racial capitalism to date in the form of a social movement led by prisoners, yet the historical legacy of radical prison organizing …

Population Structure In Hispanic St. Augustine, 1629-1763, Theodore G. Corbett

Florida Historical Quarterly

Recent study of population in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century American and European communities is providing new insights into the nature of their social existence. Such studies depend not only upon the traditional census, but utilize a variety of sources, including parish registers, tax and tribute rolls, musters, and genealogical material.1 The use of these sources for the counting of individuals and the arrangement of aggregate figures into tables may seem to produce a rigidly scientific and arid form of history, but in reality these figures do much to explain the everyday life experience of a past community. There is no better …

Madison County's Sea Island Cotton Industry, 1870-1916, Clifton Paisley Nov 2021

Madison County's Sea Island Cotton Industry, 1870-1916, Clifton Paisley

Florida Historical Quarterly

The demand for cotton with a silky fiber, great tensile strength, and a staple at least one and five-eighths inches in length created a boom in the growing of Sea Island cotton in North Florida and South Georgia during the last third of the nineteenth century. Although Sea Island never comprised more than one per cent of the cotton grown in the United States, the use of its long-staple fibers for fine fabrics, laces, thread, and eventually for automobile tires enabled “long cotton,” as it was called, to command a price that was double and sometimes triple that paid for …

The Enterprise Of Florida, Eugene Lyon Nov 2021

The Enterprise Of Florida, Eugene Lyon

Florida Historical Quarterly

Knowledge of Florida history tends to cluster around certain key events. Thus, the Spanish colonial period is marked by the Ponce de León and De Soto landings, the Drake raid of 1586, and the building of the Castillo de San Marcos. Interpretation of the first successful settlement of Florida by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés is centered upon the diplomatic and military drama culminating at Fort Caroline and at Matanzas. Woodbury Lowery and Henry Folmer have shown the Spanish-French clash of 1565 in its international setting. The spiritual aspect of the Menéndez conquest has been developed by a host of historians: …
